I have seen countless threads/comments here over the past 3 weeks urging PN to fire Whipple , and of course that raises the question whether our sub par offensive production is attributable to poor play calling or poor player talent. For me , the overwhelming source of our problem is lack of offensive talent in this order: running back, O-line , TE. While certainly there are criticisms to be leveled at Whipple, by and large i agree with his pass-happy approach because our "best" offensive talent is QB and WR . Who in their right mind would try to run a power offense or "establish the running game" with this set of players?
To be blunt , we just haven't recruited the offensive side of the ball to an acceptable level, particularly at running back . We have 5 recruiting cycles to choose from on the roster and we do not have a single "average" P5 back, we have no TE and a suspect OL.
When things go bad on offense, particularly on failed 3rd downs or inside the redzone the immediate reaction is to put the blame on the play calling (i.e.) the O co-ordinator but I doubt that we would be any different regardless of who was calling the plays. No disrespect to him at all but Matt Canada was not a play calling wizard. He had a good QB who was an impeccable ball handler in a deception based offense; he had a pro RB in Conner: he had a decent TE ( Orndoff) and receiver (Jester); and he had a wingback/slot in Q Henderson who was exceptional in running the jet sweep because of his uncanny ability to plant his back foot and cut upfield at precisely the right time . Put Whipple with that talent and he is being given an extension
So those are my thoughts, it's the poor recruiting of offensive talent , not the play calling, that is main culprit . Your thoughts
