Is it time to re-evaluate Pitt Fb and PN ?

I’ve been critical of Pitt Fb and it’s coach for awhile and I think it’s time to rethink my position . What I really want to see is Pitt Fb to be a national power and to be able to consistently compete against schools like Clemson , Alabama , OSU, PSU etc on the field and for recruits . I want to see Heinz field packed with screaming crazy passionate fans . What I have come to realize is that it’s just not a realistic position to hold . Unless a Major change ( get it ) is coming this might be as good as Pitt FB will get . Winning the Coastal division against similarly talented and liked minded schools is an attainable goal and should be the criteria for a great season . Winning consistently against the likes of Clemson and other top programs just isn’t in the cards as is filling HF with wild crazy passionate fans .
I’ve also scoffed at the idea of an on campus stadium . While I doubt that Pitt has the resources or the will to build one I believe it’s the only way for Pitt to ever create a game time environment like other successful programs . They need to play in an on campus stadium with a capacity of 40k that they can sell out . To fill HF would take a team that consistently competes for a national title and I can’t see that as viable option .
As far as PN goes he’s not the best game day coach as the PSU debacle showed , but since I’ve finally accepted reality and lowered my expectations of what a successful Pitt Fb program is he’s doing about as well as anyone could expect . Now go out and win the coastal !

Northern schools who average 40k people in a 68k seat stadium should not expect to be a Top 15 program. Lack of fan support has always been the biggest obstacle. Complain Less and $upport More

You must be 21, because many Pitt fans, still around after 35 years, deserve a medal!!!

agreed here, and not sure why the OP is getting flamed. If we settle around an 8-4 average every year I’d be really happy. I was just worried pat was heading towards constant 6-6’s going forward.

my fear is that no matter how pitt does, and if a coach does establish himself the fanbase will go full on Jamie Dixon and scream national title or bust.

Pitt has made a decision a long time ago to not to try and compete at the highest level in Fb and no amount of money will change this . Has all the ACC money helped ? I think they’re comfortable where they’re at otherwise why extend PN , Is PN going to turn Pitt into a consistent top 20 program ?

Spot on. Maybe if we string together 5-6 nice seasons together, we could become the destination program for NE recruits that want to play in a better conference than the B1G. As of right now, we are competitive every year for a trip to Charlotte. The level we are at now is easily sustainable. If we played in a small OC stadium, gameday would be perfect. It is understandable why that is far fetched but it is still fun to dream. In the meantime, we're doing ok.

There simply aren’t enough Pitt alums that prioritize Pitt Football, and Pittsburgh has a pro mentality.

Nutting is making hundreds of millions of dollars from his investment in the Pirates which are currently valued at 1.3 billion dollars so how does what he does have anything to do with the Pitt . Even as bad as the Pirates are they made 39 million dollars last yr . Say what you want about Nutting , but he’s a hell of a business man who can make millions out of a pile of shit .
I think Pitt is costing itself millions by not trying to compete at a higher level , but they’ve chosen another path . You can bitch all you want , but they are who they have chosen to be and that’s a mediocre Fb program playing in a weak division . I’ve just accepted this you can choose not
to .

Connect the dots.. he doesn’t give a crap about winning a championship and feigns the desire to do so... implicitly that is the thrust of your original post... lower the bar , be content with winning the worst division in Div 1 FB and playing bowl games in the snow in BB stadiums. Nutting heartily endorses your lowering your expectations.... whatever happened to dreaming big and accomplishing the same?

Totally ridiculous post!

Next year if Pitt stays healthy and no one goes to the pro’s. Pitt will be ranked in the pre season top 25 if we close out this year respectively.

We get most everyone back next year. Plus, we get our two best defensive lineman back that missed this year.

Pitt has a VERY good chance to have a special season next year. Especially, if we can get a couple of oline transfers and a running back. ( Blackshear from Rutgers).

Nutting dreamed big , he’s the owner of MLB franchise that’s worth over $1,300, 000,000 . As a businessman he can’t justify paying players the astronomical amounts of money they get to win games while he loses money . The Pirates local tv deal makes it impossible to pass the added costs onto the fans . He’s running a business and doesn’t think of the Pirates as a hobby . He’s a great businessman , but he’s a lousy owner .
Pitt on the other hand could generate more money from its Fb business by being better and they’ve chosen not to do it . I want them to kick PSU butt , but what I want doesn’t count and I’ve accepted that Pitt will be just a mediocre Fb team . I do have higher hopes for JC and Pitt hoops .

He's 5-2. He won his division last year. Please let it go
Like I said Pitt winning the coastal division was and should be their goal . Winning the conference championship against Clemson is another thing altogether . Wouldn’t it be nice to win a bowl game every once and awhile . Beating other mediocre teams doesn’t make you a powerhouse , it just means your slightly better than the lousy teams you play . ThIs is the level Pitt has chosen to play at and I’ve just come around to accepting it you should too or you can be disappointed for the next 40 yrs !

I hope we have to pull a Jamie Dixon on Narduzzi because that would mean he elevated the program to heights not seen here in a loooooong time :)

But yes, I agree with you.

Well it took us a few years, but the BB coach we have now, is doing much better than Dixon recruiting at Pitt, especially the last 4 years of Dixon which was a dumpster fire, some truth for you
