Is Pitt the only team in history to own 2 Top 5 wins in the final ranking?

Just by the nature of it, the Top 5 teams in a regular-season ending poll wont have more than 1 or 2 losses. The odds of 2 teams ranked in the Top 5, both having losses to the same team is extremely small.

Just wondering if anyone out there knows.of a website where you can search this. Pitt might be the only or one of the only teams to have ever done this.

It means our rival was denied a spot in CFL Playoffs. It means Pitt had a very solid season.

How can you take something as awesome as beating two Top 5 teams and spin it as a negative? Ridiculous.

You're the TD that warned Pitt fans to retreat to their "safe space" before the Clemson game, no?

I don't know the answer to your question but I think a team with 2 wins over the top 5 would get a little more respect than Pitt has been getting. I'm getting a little tired of hearing all over how Clemson has the worst loss of the top 4 teams. Seems like everyone just sees the 4 losses next to our name and we're automatically considered to be average to mediocre.

That one fat slob moron today behind the scenes (idk his name), A) said PSU had the best win of the season. Not true, Pitt at Clemson was waaaay more impressive. And B) he said the most impressive win was PSU AT Ohio State. This clown on the CFP selection show giving his opinion, doesn't even know what he's talking about. The game was AT Penn State dipshit.

Hey thanks for stating the obvious. I'm not expecting anyone to heap praise on us and put us in the top ten but I also don't think it's accurate how so much of the media paints us as dog meat because of the 4 losses.

Bottom line, considering who we beat, who we lost to, and no blow out losses, I wouldn't characterize Clemson's loss as a bad loss.
Nobody other than 'Bama has beat Clemson since the beginning of last season...and they just barely beat Clemson. I'd say that game said much more about Pitt than it did Clemson.

So far, pre-bowl, looking at Final BCS rankings & ESPN College Football Encyclopedia (cuts off at 2004), I only see LSU 2011 with wins over final BCS #2 Alabama & final BCS #5 Oregon. Other two cases I've seen on cursory glance are both post-bowl / title game: Tennessee with wins over final AP #3 FSU & final AP #5 Florida, & 1995 Nebraska with wins over final AP #2 Florida & final AP #5 Colorado. In both those cases Coaches had #5 as #6.

Pitt has earned SMF's respect. I had Pitt 12th in my final poll ahead of FSU and Louisville meaning we desreved the Orange Bowl. Pitt's resume is unbelievable.

Thanks for looking that up. So, LSU in 2011 may be the only other team to have done it. I hope EJ puts something out on this. Its a great talking point.

With a 4 team playoff, the national champion does it every year. So to answer your question, yes. It has been done before.

Agree. No problem. One more to add: 1988 ND with wins over final regular season AP #2 Miami & final regular season AP #5 USC. My review is cursory but I think LSU 2011 is the only other regular season case in the BCS / CFP era.

Well. We do have 4 losses. Our defense was terrible. We gave up 61 pts to SU and their backup QB.. What type of glowing reports would you like??
Really, how can you complain about the loses. We beat two conference champions who happened to be top 5 teams and lost to two conference runner ups.
Also EVERY team Pitt lost to has spent time in the top 25 this year.and excerpt for Miami Pitt should have won them ( and created a rematch against Clemson in the ACC championship). So how can you say they were bad losses.
Our defense might have been awful But our offense was excellent, so that's not an issue.
So what kind of flowing report would I(and most Pitt fans) want?
How about one that shows respect !!!

I mean Pitt typically takes 5k tops to bowl games. That doesnt exactly make Pitt a hot commodity to bowl game leadership. That said, I'd rather play NYC than the but those that is El Paso. That place just sucks. Hard to get to, desolate, some nice mountain scenery sure, but it's no Manhattan or Austin or SoFla.

We are certainly one of the top 10 teams this year.

Really we are a bad spot at Vtech (and a game full of pushoffs), and a miraculous comeback by NC away from being top 5 right now.

2016 and 2002... both 8-4 teams. And I think you can make an argument we could or should have gone undefeated both years. Even the Miami game this season, big drop by weah changed the game followed by other game changing plays. Because on top of the two games you mentioned, I'd also add that IMO we pissed the OK State game away. It was right there for us to take.

Two more (pre-bowl):

1997 Florida beat final regular season AP / Coaches #3 Tennessee & final regular season AP/ Coaches #4 Florida State.

2000 Washington beat final regular season AP / Coaches #2 Miami & final regular season AP #5 (Coaches #6) Oregon State.

Wouldn't have anticipated these two examples. I remember Florida getting upset by LSU in 1997. Washington's 2000 season is documented in the book "Scoreboard, Baby" which (worth reading) presents a pretty strong indictment of the program's corruption at the time.

Good research

The last team to beat two teams ranked in top 5 in last poll prior to bowls was Auburn in 2006. They beat Florida (#2) and LSU (#4).

Yeah, thats what happens when any team loses 4 games, even if they were close losses to top 25 opponents. Literally the worst pass defense in D1 football, and then to get blown out by unranked Miami, how much respect do you honestly think this team has earned?

It's real simple-win 10 games and you'll get plenty of respect. Lose 4 or more and you really don't deserve much.
