playing at much less than his physical best for much of this year?

He was significantly better his first two seasons.

Doubt it ...

.... just the other day, Jamie Dixon talked about how the team is healthy right now, and how no one is having problems in that regard.

Usually, Jamie will go the other direction to make a point to talk about minor injuries.

Having said this, it is not accurate at all to say that James was significantly better his first two seasons. Actually he has been significantly better this season that his first two seasons.

What has changed is the without other perimeter players making plays, what we may not be getting from James becomes more exaggerated.

I think it's also fair to say that this team needs James to make more of an impact this year than he is making. And this may make it look like he's worse, even if this really isn't the case.

Finally, I believe many folks are looking at James' lack of offensive production as one of the team's biggest problem.

Our biggest problem is our inability to guard the dribble (or pick and roll). No one was good with this today, but James has been better defensively on the perimeter than many give him credit for being (which isn't to say he's been good -- no one has been).

Re: Doubt it ...

Robinson stats are almost identical the last 3 seasons.

His shooting percentage is between 37-40%
His 3 point shooting is between 30-34%
His foul shooting is between 79-83%
His play has dropped off considerably every year in Conference play
His turnovers per game increased by .7 per game this year

All 3 years he has been here, his stats are almost identical.

You could put an All American 2 guard with him next year, and his stats are going to be the exact same next year. He can't drive or shoot.

If Robinson and Newkirk start together next year, all hell will break loose.

So you are saying that ...

... you don't think James Robinson is very good?

I'm just trying to clarify because I don't think you've made it clear one way or another to this point.

Yup, that's exactly what he is saying. I look at the eye test and my eyes tell me that he will leave Pitt severely underachieving and will not be memorable at all. Well, except for mostly bad memories.

Re: So you are saying that ...

I don;t believe he is underachieving--that's the real heart of the problem with him. Was he overrated coming out of H.S.? I think he clearly was. He works really hard and plays with maximum effort--it just isn't enough to elevate his team. While he rarely turns the ball over, he also rarely does any damage with it in his hands. he is an easy guard, a guy the opponent doesn't need to worry about. He;s not the only one of those we have, but he's the guy who plays 34 minutes a game and has the ball in his hands the most.

As I said, I'm not suggesting he should be some kind of Trey Burke level scorer, but his inability to hit the wide open shot or get to the rim makes him an offensive liability in the half court.

I really wanted to believe in him and I defended him often on this board over his first two years. Since he started immediately as a true freshman I thought he'd be a top PG by now. He officially lost me this year. I no longer think he's much of a player. Hopefully I have him all wrong and he'll have a stellar senior year, but i wouldn't bet a nickel on that. And to the very end, some posters will be giving him a pass because he doesn't have a great supporting cast. To me, it's the opposite--the ultimate indictment of him as a player is that he can't play up a notch and really shine on a team that badly needs more from him.

Re: So you are saying that ...

Robinson is what he is, a good game managing PG. The fact that he couldn't pick up the slack for such limited production both offensively and defensively from our SGs should not be an indictment of him. We all can wish he had the ability to do that, but he doesn't.

Don't think so...But did you notice Jones looking a little rough last night? I though maybe he was maybe playing hurt. Not all year, just last night.

Re: Doubt it ...

I do think Robinson has regressed significantly defensively.

As a true freshman, he guarded the two future NBA guards in McCollough and McCallum. I'm probably butchering their names but both were drafted and are still in the NBA. I'm not saying he shut them down but he didn't get abused.

Last season, he frequently was switched into the opponents's top scorer for several minutes, Jabari Parker, TJ Warren, the Clemson's KJ McDaniel, etc.

This year, with the exceptions of the Jerian Grant and Marcus Paige games, he was below average defensively this year. His DRtg in conference has gone from 97 to 104 to 113.

He has lost weight and supposedly is quicker but the results seem worse. I still think he's our only option but the drop off is puzzling.

Re: Doubt it ...

... I'm not disagreeing with your main point but I would think the defensive rating / performance on every person on this team has regressed.

Hate to beat a dead horse, but of course I will. Without a physical intimidating presence in the paint [rim protector] on the defense behind the guards...the perimiter missteps and slow steps are further magnified. Put a good 5 on this team, and some of the lay ups and plays where teams are scoring at the rim go away. Oh well... Hail to Pitt!

Re: Doubt it ...

I just don't think James is very good offensively or defensively.

This program has been marked by high level pg play. Knight and Fields were among the best in the country and Krauser and Woodall were top 25 caliber lead guards despite their warts and detractors.

In comparison, James is a guy off the street looking to get some guard in. And yes, his defense has regressed IMO.

We just have to get through next year with him and then when the sophs are seniors we should be really good, assuming Jamie doesn't leave and we keep Heron.

Not sure, but seemed to run out of gas again after seemingly starting out in better shape.
