Not "hunch", the word you are looking for is "potential". And the longer you play in college the more you are a known commodity and the less "potential" there is in your game.

Choosing an 18 year old based on his perceived potential, rather than an older player who is more of a known commodity, is pretty much the definition of a hunch. Or an estimate, educated guess, gut feeling or whatever word you want to go with.
