Jaland Lowe

Its going to be an interesting few weeks / couple months coming up.

From the looks of things currently, our top 2 schools competing with us for Jaylen Curry were previously Ole Miss and Alabama. Ole Miss is in the drivers seat for Josh Hubbard, a top 100 pg with a decision upcoming. Bama is in the drivers seat for Freddie Dillione with a likely decision upcoming, a top 50 caliber point guard with a ranking bump coming. Curry is visiting Pitt for a 2nd time and recently picked up a Memphis offer. He was solid at the peach jam, solid in the eybl, and was strong at the NBA players Top 100 camp. South Carolina is one other school in the mix. He played both point and off the ball at the peach jam. He is a legit top 80-100 talent and rated appropriately. We are in real solid shape with the Boo Williams connection.

Capel has a good relationship with Lowe's father. He was excellent at the peach jam and respectable in the eybl. The relationship is in place much like with Carlton Carrington which carries some weight. He is a legit top 80-100 talent and will be getting a ranking bump. More offers are likely to come in.

Ty-laur Johnson is better than both of these players and there is some considerable separation now as he is massively underrated. He is a legit top 35ish type talent nationally and is going to be "big" time in college with jet quick speed, arguably the best handles in the 2023 class, and a killer instinct ability to take games over, especially in the closing minutes. His recruitment could come down to Pitt and Seton Hall and it would be a massive mistake to get one of the other 2 guards above him and stop recruiting him. His visits start in August and its going to be tough for other schools to get him out of the northeast region unless a major player like North Carolina comes in to steal him like they did with RJ Davis.

Vader, any news on Marlon Barnes? Still committed to PItt? Has he been playing in any tournaments?

He was hurt for a while and missed quite a bit of time. I have stats I posted in the other thread on him but there is not that much data.

Carrington had a huge summer. He's a legit top 50-60ish 4 star national talent now and is a year young for his class. He played far above expectations and had big performances at the peach jam, the last eybl session, and the DMV live, all of which I have the stats for. The biggest thing is keeping him.

I think Curry and Johnson are both good enough that you chase both as hard as you can, and if one of them wants to jump on board, you go for it. Bird in hand, etc.

Lowe is the one I’m a little less sure on, but I could be convinced that he’s in the same tier with those other guys. Capel’s leaning on his personal connections hard in this cycle, which is what we’ve wanted him to do all along!

Any thoughts on Brandin Cummings?

Decent shooter from 3 and the midrange with a "quick trigger" like Gibbs used to have.. Uses crossovers and stepbacks and can make shots off the bounce. Respectable athletic ability and decent passing skills. Combo guard at 6'2ish. Could have a good college ceiling by continuing to work on shooting skills off the bounce. More of a 2 than a 1 right now and currently projects as a 2, he's much more scorer than facilitator. At this stage looks like a top 100ish player. I have not watched a lot of the 2024 kids unless they played "up" in the eybl. High on Pitt and if he commits, he'll be trying to pull in Royce Parham with him. Parham will be highly ranked, top 50ish.

Also, Jaland Lowe picked up his 4th star on ESPN's rankings that have not been officially updated yet, but he is now a 4 star. I also would be stunned if Lowe is not inside the top 100 on 247s updated rankings which are upcoming.

And here is the big one. Ty-laur Johnson is visiting Pitt Sept. 1st. And has an Ole Miss visit the 24th. What is interesting in regards to this is the timing. He visits Pitt before Jaland Lowe, and visits Ole Miss 2 days after Josh Hubbard announces his commitment. And Hubbard is an Ole Miss lean as a 5'10 4 star point guard.

Capel is applying the right kind of pressure for those guys.

Jaylen Curry's 2nd visit to Pitt will be Sept. 9th.

All 3 of our top guard targets for 2023 have officials planned.

With that said, I think Pitt is in the drivers seat for Ty-laur Johnson. He visits Pitt first.

So we’re getting Lowe and Curry on the same weekend for their officials?

Carrington #94
Barnes #138

Pitt's class currently #19

Carlton Carrington is still underrated. There is no way Solomon Ball is ranked 40th and Carrington barely top 100 when Carrington carried team melo in the last session of the eybl and in the peach jam tournament and had the best stats on the entire roster in both events . Carrington was all league in both events, Ball neither. Both he and Ross (another Uconn commit) who also played on team Melo are both overrated as I watched every one of these games. Carrington's shooting percentage from 3 between the peach jam, eybl last session, and DMV Live was around 40% (I can get the exact if someone wants it as I have the full stats from all 3 events but have to add up the shots). And most of his shots were off the bounce as he created for himself as team melo had no point guard. Carrington also ran the point on team melo roughly 33% of the time. Ball never ran the point. We got an absolute steal with Carrington. He has the potential to be really good at the next level. His shot making ability off the bounce to hit difficult shots at a consistent level gives him a big edge going into college.

Jaylen Curry dropped in the rankings here and on 247. I said he should be around top 80-100ish. His midrange jumper was not good enough to warrant higher than that and he struggled in certain games. He also put up decent stats at the peach jam and came off the bench multiple times in limited action there, either due to injury or discipline, Im not sure the reason why his pt was reduced and he came off the bench. Ranking fell because of it and Im ok with that. Bottom 150 is low however, as Curry was one of the top players at the nba players camp.

I have no comment on Barnes, did not play enough.

Jaland Lowe got the ranking bump as I predicted. He's now top 75 nationally on 247. That's a little high for my taste because Lowe was exceptional and 1st team all peach jam in one event but was just "good" in the other eybl sessions. He wasnt "strong and consistent event after event like Carrington 3 events in a row to jump to be Top 75. I think Lowe should be top 100ish for now with the ability to go higher. Still, he is a talent and people noticed it.

Papa Kante's ranking varies all over the place depending on the site. Personally I think Kante is around top 80-100ish. Great intensity, defense, good rebounding, but needs work on offense and tries to do way more than he is capable of on offense at this point. On3 has Kante top 30. He needs a lot of improvement on offense to justify that at this point.

Tylaur Johnson is criminally underrated. Event after event in every event he was putting up bigtime numbers and consistently doing it on offense and defense. Johnson is a top 35-45ish national talent and will put up significant stats immediately from day 1 in college. He's a turbo charged point guard that can be a lethal scorer inside 15 feet as he loves driving into the lane to make plays, he takes games over in the final 5 minutes, and hit multiple game winners this summer. He provides a ton of energy on both ends. He needs to be the top target overall in 2023.

Jaland Lowe has recently picked up offers from Memphis, VCU, and Washington State with Purdue, Northwestern, Houston and others in contact and this was expected after his big peach jam tournament. More offers are probable.

With most of his final officials booked, Pitt is obviously in his final 5 and may be close to his top choice.

Ironically, Memphis now as pressure on Lowe, Curry, and Ty-laur Johnson, the same top 3 guard targets as Pitt. Memphis also recently hired Johnson's aau coach.

This is what Lowe recently said on Pitt:

"I have a great relationship with Head Coach Jeff Capel and his staff. They are a well-recognized school in the ACC with high expectations of being at the top. I have a great opportunity at my position coming up. They are another visit I’m looking forward to on the weekend of September 9th."

It should also be noted that Lowe is making a second trip to SMU on labor day and also said they have pushed for him the most.

With that said, I think it is very possible Pitt could push to try and land 2 of these 3 players.

It should also be noted, Carlton Carrington is having another big camp at Will Barton's camp. his 5th strong event showing in a row for Carrington, consistency matters. This is after strong performances at the ADG Moneyball. Consistent 15-20 point per game performances. His National Ranking will continue to rise.
