Not to distract from the news of the day, but I'm working on tomorrow's "Inside the Numbers" feature and I wanted to post this because I thought it was interesting.
Jason Pinnock made his first career start on Saturday and Eric Dungey threw at him 8 times. 4 of those passes were caught for 66 yards. Those aren't terrible numbers but they're not exactly lockdown - until you look a little closer.
Pinnock was matched up with Syracuse's leading receiver, Jamal Custis, a lot on Saturday. Dungey threw to Custis 7 times with Pinnock in coverage and Custis caught 3 of those for 70 yards. 3/7 is a pretty decent percentage, but one of those catches was the questionable 42-yard catch on the sidelines; if that gets reviewed and overturned, Custis ends up with 28 yards on 2 receptions and 7 targets, which is a very good stat line for Pinnock.
And the fourth catch Pinnock gave up was the screen pass to Moe Neal at the goal line; Pinnock tackled Neal for a four-yard loss and nearly caused a safety.
I'd say Pinnock had a pretty good day.
