Jay Paterno on PSU vs Pitt

Wow, it's a good read and you can't stop your hate for one second to say you enjoyed the article. I'm done discussing anything with you...you are now on ignore.
Dude.... there were several falsehoods in that article by Jay. A couple big whoppers were:

1. That Pitt killed JoePa's "Eastern Conference". Ignoring that PSU first tried to get into the Big East and was rejected before the Big East offered Pitt.

2. That Joe wanted the series to return. He specifically took actions between 2001 and his death to PREVENT it from returning. It was only after his death that PSU began trying to make the series happen again.

The general gist of the column was nice by Jay. He was recalling the same memories most of us have of the series and why it should ALWAYS happen.

But he wrote it through blue-white colored glasses and distorted the truth often.

2 things:

1. Why was he lecturing at Katz? What qualifications does he have to speak to MBa students?

2. I cant believe he confirmed what I have been saying for years. In 2000, Paterno brought his team (in suits) to greet the Pitt students. Sure, the students were drunk and yelling terrible things but instead of being classy and rising above that, he brought the team over and he and the players were yelling back at them. It was one of the most surreal things I've ever seen.

It was like reading something from a twelve year old. Good grief. Almost every praise he gave to Pitt ended with him showing Penn State has more.

Gordon Gee himself stated in an interview (the audio is available on the internet) that the reason why Pitt wasn't invited to join the Big Ten is because of the efforts of Joseph V Paterno. He'll probably roll in his grave when the kickoff takes place on Saturday.

I think the article was pretty fair. Some good memories and certainly Jay has long been a part of it. I am sure he is somewhat excited for the game. I am sure though it will bring alot of memories from his dad.

Yeah Joe didn't want to play Pitt. If he did they would have played. The bullshit about 7 home games is just that, they could have had 7 home games anyhow.
Also love how everyone fails to point out that paterno's eastern conference failed because of Pitt. It failed because typical of Paterno the conference was setup in his selfish style. They were to share BB revenues but not FB.

He was at Katz? Well, I graduated from Katz and that is a real slap in the face and diminishes their credibility quite a bit. If that's true, maybe I should consider reducing or eliminating my annual contribution to them until they start bringing in qualified lecturers.

This little nugget doesn't come out in public enough. Paterno tried to get the nits in the Big East when he was athletic director. The Big East offered Pitt who accepted and pretty much ended Paterno's idea (BC and Syracuse would stay in the Big East as well).

Not sure of the truth to this but I was told MANY years ago that Paterno did not want to split the football revenue evenly but wanted the basketball revenue to be split which upset Syracuse and rightfully so.

Hopefully someone in the know back then can clarify this. I was just a younger pup at the time...:)

That was a pretty good article from Jay, I must admit.

But Jay's father knew.

Yeah........F Jay Paterno........but that was pretty good for a guy who is really biased.

As a die hard Pitt fan it was well written. I understand the slant and I am fine with that. The story brought back a lot of memories. Fortunately I remember the Pitt wins more like the 14-9 win at State College with Randy McMillan. The infamous coin toss with fast Freddy Jacobs and all the fun at both teams expenses. This is why this game needs to be played annually. Time goes by quickly and we should all enjoy this ride.

That, and Paterno had visions of eventually being the league commissioner, too. As we all know, it was all about him.

Hey what happened to OP troll? Mods get him out already. I was getting ready to abuse him but I guess it would be a waste cause he can't defend himself. Bummer!

The article is fine. It is definitely disingenuous at points but it's fine.

Also, I too have heard the Gordon Gee luncheon recording. It was from a booster luncheon when he was the president at Ohio State.

During his Q&A, one of the guests asked him if he would help to get Cincinnati into the Big Ten?

He explained in no uncertain terms that Ohio State would fight like hell to keep Cincinnati out of the Big Ten because it would take away a major recruiting advantage they currently enjoy.

He then went on to say that Penn State had always fought like hell to keep Pittsburgh out of the Big Ten for that exact same reason. He said something along the lines of, "Joe Paterno has made it very clear where he stands on this issue." It was something like that. In other words, unless Gee is lying - and why would he lie about that - Jay Paterno is full of shitt.

Incidentally, that luncheon may have been the same one where Gee famously quipped that he hoped Jim Tressell wouldn't fire him. It was definitely from that same general time frame.

Here's one example of a Gordon Gee interview. This one's from Sports Illustrated:

http://www.si.com/college-football/.../ohio-state-gordon-gee-controversial-comments

From the interview:

• 11:03: “You know Penn State just abhors Pitt. It would be the same way. Even though we love Cincinnati as a city, we want it to be an Ohio State city. They’d have to take Gene out and shoot him to let Cincinnati into the Big Ten. There are some things that we just would not to. And that’s the way that Penn State also feels about Pitt.”

Yeah, I remember that very clearly now.

This is a very good example - one of a great many - of what I'm talking about. They have real honesty issues and it's difficult to trust anything they say because they have been so loose with the truth for so many years.

Everything is all about image with those guys and it's frustrating because they just lie through their teeth all the time in an effort to present themselves as "the good guys."

It's weird, TBH.

If you hate us, that's fine. But man up and admit it. If you are blackballing us, that's to be expected. It may not be in your best interest if we were in the Big Ten too. I get that. I don't agree with that mentality but I understand why you feel that way.

However, what I don't understand is why you then go out of your way to insist otherwise? That's the part that makes no sense and is so galling. It's patronizing, it's offensive and it's flat out dishonest.

The all sports conference didn't come together for a lot of reasons and believe me, I have always maintained that it was a mistake on everyone's part and that Pitt has some responsibility there.

Our administration at the time was idiotic and made a number of questionable and selfish choices.

However, Penn State also bears responsibility for that conference failing to come to fruition. If they didn't, everyone else in the East would've circumvented Pitt and formed the league anyway, right?

The fact that nobody accepted Paterno's terms should probably clue people in on how the deal was looked upon by everyone outside of the Penn State bubble.

I think the central questions are why are basic things like honesty and humility such fundamental problems for those guys?

This is why some people referred to him as "Phony Joe". If he admitted to black-balling Pitt - or even to hating Pitt - he knew that he'd look bad to a lot of people in Western PA. Instead, he always said the "right" things: "(he'd) love to have Pitt in the Big Ten"...."(he'd) love to schedule Pitt, except (they) need seven home games a year"....and the biased, blue 'n white jock-sniffing Pittburgh media would gobble it up and swallow it whole.

I'm here. I had meetings most of the afternoon but I'm finally done with work and yes, I can defend myself just fine. I just haven't seen anything but silly bickering so there isn't much for me to say. The article is very well written and few have stated as such. For anyone over the age of 45 this article should have brought back many good memories. It's a shame many here wasted the opportunity to share their personal memories about the past meetings of these two teams but instead chose to spew hate.

I've been involved with Pitt sport since 1972. Extremely close since 1976. The relationship between Pitt/PSU was demaged beyond repair by a very small and arrogant man named Joe Paterno. He sat in a cow town and didn't realize at the time that football couldn't bully the Northeast TV markets into total surrender. Now Pitt presents a very legitimate competitive entity in every way. So history is repeating itself for different reasons. Years ago Paterno's pettiness and arrogance damaged the relationship. Now PSUs fears and insecurities damage the relationship. Pitt has moved on long ago from it's little brother complex. PSU craves its self proclaimed big brother status still. Pitt's best days are in front of us while PSU holds on to the status quo. After the Sandusky tragedy not many people will ever look at Paterno or PSU the same. Sorry to be the messenger but PSU, and it's football program, ain't what it use to be pal.

Come on man admit it. Joe knew!!!

Hard to argue with this Greg. And after Joe killed Pitt's national title chances with 48 unanswered points, Pitt's program slowly died. It has come back, but to nowhere near what it was, I think even the most avid Pitt fan would agree. And lets face it, because of this, Pitt fans unnaturally hate Paterno and cannot see past Paterno to just enjoy and view this game for what it is.

It is amazing to me, Pitt fans have clamored for this game for over a decade, whining, crying, etc...and now it is here, and all they can focus on is Paterno (who is dead by the way) and Jerry Sandusky. Not about football. Nothing about football. Maybe you are preparing yourselves for the inevitable, another disappointing football game and result so you have supplanted this by this moral supremacy narrative, like playing this game is going to change anything that happened in the past.

You guys need to lighten up, have some drinks, go to the game, root for your team and enjoy the moment you all have been waiting for. Good luck.

I have no problem admitting that Pitt is not an elite football school and I have no illusions that they will be. I feel Pitt is capable of being a year in year out top 25 team with a top 10 finish every 5-10 years with a real chance every 10-15 years. I believe Pitt is capable of that. They will never be a blue blood, but they don't need to be. What I said would probably satisfy 75-85% of Pitt fans.

Our hatred of Paterno is not because he beat Pitt 48-14 stopping a National Title for us. We hate him because he was a smug SOB who did not do the right thing.

Not speaking for Greg or anyone else for that matter, but you think a Nitter coming on our board and ignoring us matters, then your seniority complex is on JoePA's level. We all know how well that worked for him.

The fans that support paturdo will NEVER accept the fact the he knew and helped to cover it up. Most of them are 50 years old and older. They will tell you that he was indeed in charge for everything except something as important as a child raping ex coach!

I come here occasionally for discussion, not to be spoken at and to have Joe Knew jammed down my throat. If you reply to me directly with that stuff you go on ignore. Many others posted similar stuff in this thread but it wasn't directed at me. See the difference?
