Jay Wright Retires

Probably not a coincidence that his last game was against a program/coach that got caught cheating and still hasn't paid any penalty. Good guy. Sad day for NCAA hoops. Too many of those guys are going or gone.
Bill Self’s mere existence is wearing thin on a lot of coaches

Rumors amongst my Nova buddies is that his wife is believed to be sick.
Not what I’m reading.

Wright, already a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, began seriously mulling his retirement throughout this past season, a source said. He moved closer to his decision in March. In recent weeks, Villanova power brokers had discussions with Wright see if the coach would change his mind.

Privately, he has shared frustrations with some of the significant changes with the way the sport operates. It's not that Wright is against the idea of the transfer portal or name, image and likeness rules, but rather all that comes with those things, the way recruiting is in this era, and what it means to be a power-conference coach who's expected to perform at the highest of levels on an annual basis.

just another behind the times dinosaur like that other first ballot coaching HOFer Izzo, right Souf?

Wait, you just quoted something that says that "It's not that Wright is against the idea of the transfer portal or name, image and likeness rules" to show that he's just like someone who is against the transfer portal?

He's one of the few good guys out there who gets it done the right way. I don't blame him one bit. College basketball has devolved over the past 8 or 10 years and good coaches won't survive. You have to be a Self or Pearl to survive now. That's very disappointing.

I didn’t see that one coming
He's not like some other attention grabbing coach that announces a season prior to leaving and then have a long drawn out farewell tour.

Wright did it the right way. Keep your intentions quiet, take your team to the Final Four, and then immediately leave once decision is made.

Well done Jay Wright!

Not sure what's true or not, but I would expect Wright (and a lot of coaches) to be turned off by the current CBB environment. I'd be surprised if they weren't. There just cannot be as much enjoyment and satisfaction when these players are playing musical chairs every year now. The enjoyment and satisfaction come from having players stay in the program and helping them develop over those 4 years. The state of things now is lamentable, to say the least.

I think you will see more and more of this. There really isn't an off-season with these guys. Constantly recruiting. I think more guys will just walk away.

I’m glad you’re such a defender of millionaires complaining that their jobs got harder.

Yep your right Joe, if that quote is accurate, then he pretty much says he’s against the transfer rule and NIL without directly saying he’s against them. He should have just thrown a big BUT in there.

Can’t like this enough. You are a freaking coach of a silly game at the end of the day that has no real importance to anything other than Vegas gambling houses and the precious few players who strike the lottery to have grown fairly tall and able to play it decently. Get over your own massive ego and depart quickly and efficiently, once you think this “burden” has become “too much” for you. There are plenty of people who can do that job as well or better. The players are the ones who really make the product. Realize it and be humbled by it.

Everyone hates the free transfer rule except you. Its beyond terrible for the sport and probably even the wrong thing to do for the kids as it makes them quit ASAP. Sitting out a year, practicing with the team, improving your game, and focusing on academics while going to school, living, and eating for free isnt the worst thing.

I love the free transfer rule. Wait until you see all the kids who get a second free transfer. Frank Martin Opined on Twitter today that his buddy told him they should start a coach’s portal. Uh, Frank, that’s been that way forever. You were coaching South Carolina last year.

All this bullshit about teaching them to quit is exactly that. The adults in the room quit toxic situations all the time. Over half of all marriages end in divorce but people are mad someone that wants more playing time? Do you quit your job if your boss tells you one thing and then does another.

Maybe coaches should be held accountable for the promises they make.

Not everyone hates it. It will force coaches to actually be honest with recruits, because the classic coach bait and switch of “we see you playing right away” only to have the kid redshirt will no longer fly.

It’s going to result in high-majors offering fewer high school kids, which means that you’re going to see a lot more kids committing to regional mid-majors that always made sense for the kid, rather than a kid from the northeast committing to Washington State because that’s his best high major offer. It’s going to be good for the game to see local kids going to mid-majors in the region, even if they transfer up if they succeed.

Sorry. I’m not going to feel bad that coaches have a harder job now. And for all you whine about how this teaches kids to “quit,” let’s hold quitter coaches to the same standard.

Coaches are the highest paid public employees in their state. Work harder.

Correct. The transfer rule only seems bad to some Pitt fans because Pitt is not handling it $ucce$$fully. Our guys of value are enticed to leave, but we shackle those who would fund the replacements. Hence we sit, with half a team. The rule is actually a potential godsend because otherwise a horrible program like ours is this past decade would have a mountain higher than Everest to scale in order to get back. Now, it’s just a matter of letting our wealthiest/ biggest ego alums go hog wild with phony NIL deals…which is now perfectly within the rules!!!

1000% agree. He feels the way many college basketball fans feel. This revolving door of the portal doesn't allow a team to be built and achieve an identity. Saying it's lamentable is mild, but true. It's sad and disgusting.

Neptune is being reported as the replacement.
This guy is so good he already has a statue.

Quitting and leaving a situation just because you don't like the way someone looked at you or a teammate banged your girlfriend is not an excuse or the answer. But this is about Jay Wright and he is right if he feels that college basketball has changed for the worse with a lack of a team culture and no identity.

Serious question: Why is it sad and disgusting? Why is it bad that someone wants to transfer because their teammate banged their girlfriend? You don't think that contributes to a poor locker room culture that might make a player unhappy? Would you force one of your kids to stay at a school if they weren't happy? Or if it wasn't sufficiently advancing their career goals or professional aspirations?

The impetus is on the coaches to create an environment that promotes player retention the same way it's on managers to promote a work culture emphasizes employee retention. Are there instances where the transfer portal allows for tampering and cheating? Sure. But I'd bet a fair portion of players transferring to find better fits, academically or athletically. And I find it interesting so many people are blaming players instead of the very well compensated coaches for failing to recruit and retain players.

Eggactly. Why spend your golden years being used as a pawn (albeit highly compensated) by some “handler” of a 17 year old when you have all the money you need?

You mean like how the coaches have to sit out a year after they break contracts and had promised the kids and their mothers that they were going to be there for them and take care of them?! Oh wait...
