Justin Champagnie makes pro debut in NBA Summer League
The Pitt alum scored 10 points in 15 minutes and helped the Toronto Raptors defeat the New York Knicks 89-79

🤣🤣🤣Don't think he'll make the Raptors roster at the moment, since they're loaded, but I can definitely see him being an impact player in the G league.
🤨I'm referring to players on the roster at his position/capability.
Well I was interested, soTheir game on Wednesday night is on ESPN2 for anyone who is interested.
I noticed that too in the first game. My guess is that was the instructions given to him by the coaches. What struck me was on
offense, he basically set up
in the corner and waited
for the ball to come to him
For a guy whose 3-pt shooting percentage at Pitt was 28%, that does not make a lot of sense. Cam, on the other hand, is at 38% in the NBA.I noticed that too in the first game. My guess is that was the instructions given to him by the coaches.
Cam Johnson plays that role alot in PHX and I'm not a fan of it, because it limits the player's growth.
My guess is that's the part of his game in which they want him to work on, but I think he should also work on his handles. He may not be a priority for them at this time and would have to work on other parts of his game in the G league. For a guy whose 3-pt shooting percentage at Pitt was 28%, that does not make a lot of sense. Cam, on the other hand, is at 38% in the NBA.
It was if Champ wasn't even in the offense. The guards never looked his way.Good point. The only problem
is the guards go one on one,
and our guy in the corner
doesn't get any touches.
And all of that is by design. They need to open up spacing for the higher priority players to get their isolation opportunities. Getting shots up for Champ isn't a priority for them. He can take em when they come, but they're not designing plays for him. I was happy to see him not hesitating for the most part, when he did get opportunities in the 1st game.Good point. The only problem
is the guards go one on one,

Guys magically seem to get a lot better on D when paychecks are involved. I think that, along with him being healthy, has led to better defense in these games.Good points above on
Cam and Champ's %'s
from three land. Aside
from that, I also don't
like the spread the floor
and let the guards go
one on one type of
offense. However, that's
today's game, and not
just in the pros. Capel
used that approach with
X for three years.
Champ's defense looked a
little better than at Pitt. He
hustled, but still has a lot
to improve. He's not alone
in that regard. I agree, he
doesn't appear to be a
"priority at this time." G
League probably his proving
ground.
To me, it looks like he is still feeling his way through, which sounds about right. He will/should be in the G-League for much of this year, which is not a bad thing.
I watched the game and it was Toronto's last game of the summer league.Champagnie played what I believe was their final game of the summer league today. A couple of their regular starters sat, so Champagnie started. He played 23 minutes, 11 points on 1-2 on ones, 5-10 on twos and 0-3 on threes. 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals.
