Justin Champagnie makes pro debut in NBA Summer League

Saw the game yesterday and he did look good. Definitely looked like he was aiming to prove that he can be a 3pt threat.

Don't think he'll make the Raptors roster at the moment, since they're loaded, but I can definitely see him being an impact player in the G league.

Their game on Wednesday night is on ESPN2 for anyone who is interested.
Well I was interested, so
I tuned in. This was not his
best game. 2 pts. on 2 FT's,
2 rebounds and 2 blocks.
He was 0-3 from the field.
What struck me was on
offense, he basically set up
in the corner and waited
for the ball to come to him.
Given all the one on one by
the guards, he hardly had
any touches. Scottie Barnes
is obviously the "go to" guy
on this team along with
Center, Precious Achiuwa.

Based on what I saw he
has a long way to go and
will probably settle in the
G league as many predicted.

I noticed that too in the first game. My guess is that was the instructions given to him by the coaches.

Cam Johnson plays that role alot in PHX and I'm not a fan of it, because it limits the player's growth.

For a guy whose 3-pt shooting percentage at Pitt was 28%, that does not make a lot of sense. Cam, on the other hand, is at 38% in the NBA.

My guess is that's the part of his game in which they want him to work on, but I think he should also work on his handles. He may not be a priority for them at this time and would have to work on other parts of his game in the G league.

Good points above on
Cam and Champ's %'s
from three land. Aside
from that, I also don't
like the spread the floor
and let the guards go
one on one type of
offense. However, that's
today's game, and not
just in the pros. Capel
used that approach with
X for three years.

Champ's defense looked a
little better than at Pitt. He
hustled, but still has a lot
to improve. He's not alone
in that regard. I agree, he
doesn't appear to be a
"priority at this time." G
League probably his proving
ground.

One thing to add. The purpose of Summer League isn't necccesarily to win games. It's an opportunity for players to learn and develop. Him being a bad 3pt shooter would make sense that they'll want him to work on his shooting during Summer League.

Good point. The only problem
is the guards go one on one,
and our guy in the corner
doesn't get any touches.

It was if Champ wasn't even in the offense. The guards never looked his way.

Champagnie had 8 points tonight on 1-2 on ones, 2-4 on twos and 1-2 on threes. 5 rebounds, 0 assists, 2 steals, 1 block.

He only played 12 minutes total, and only played a few minutes in the 3rd quarter and none in the 4th. I hope he didn't get hurt.

Those are much better #'s
then the last game. If he
only played 12 minutes,
that's not bad output. As
you said...."hope he didn't
get hurt."

And all of that is by design. They need to open up spacing for the higher priority players to get their isolation opportunities. Getting shots up for Champ isn't a priority for them. He can take em when they come, but they're not designing plays for him. I was happy to see him not hesitating for the most part, when he did get opportunities in the 1st game.

Guys magically seem to get a lot better on D when paychecks are involved. I think that, along with him being healthy, has led to better defense in these games.

To me, it looks like he is still feeling his way through, which sounds about right. He will/should be in the G-League for much of this year, which is not a bad thing.

Agree about "still finding his
way." He played 20 minutes
last night....20 minutes, 3pts,
4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 blk,
0 assists. It's totally the
Scottie Barnes show.
I watched part of the second
half and he's almost invisible.
I hope he develops. He's
definitely G League.

Champagnie played what I believe was their final game of the summer league today. A couple of their regular starters sat, so Champagnie started. He played 23 minutes, 11 points on 1-2 on ones, 5-10 on twos and 0-3 on threes. 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals.

I watched the game and it was Toronto's last game of the summer league.

Well if summer league is now
over, we Pitt fans probably
have some things answered.
1. Champ is most likely not
going to be on an NBA team
this year.
2. The thrust of the team
did not focus on him.
3. He has a chance to now
develop in the G League.
4. Watching him in these
games, I see why he wasn't
drafted.
5. He does have potential,
and hopefully he develops.

Just my two cents.
