** I’ve been offering these post-game “dribbles” for about 17 seasons. On my odder days, I’ve attempted to bring a musical theme to the comments, using song titles and themes from some of my very favorite bands to spur on some thoughts.

** Over the years, inspiration has come from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, Marvin Gaye, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, and a few others. But never once have I been able to bring my all-time favorite band into the mix … until now.

** So in the immortal words of R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, after this game perhaps we should proclaim It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine).

** OK, there’s the question. Do I feel fine with a team that can really score, but can’t really defend? Maybe I’m Losing My Religion, but after watching a good share of basketball during the beloved “Feast Week,” it appears that College Basketball is a different Animal this year. Maybe defense isn't what it used to be.

** Points are being scored everywhere, and no one I’ve seen thus far is looks to be capable of stringing together stop after stop. So this is Life in College Basketball, and so far it appears as though Pitt knows How to Live It.

** But let’s cut to the chase and the story of tonight’s game. The Panthers can certainly Walk Unafraid with #2 in the game. Mike Young was a manchild! Trip after trip, Mike has calling for the ball, and the Panthers found him time and time again. Get the ball into Mike in the post, and Sweetness Follows -- be that a gorgeous back down move, a nifty face up jumper, or a deft pass to an open man on the perimeter. At times, he was also a strong defender in the post, too.

** We need to come to grips with the idea that we likely watching the most offensively skilled power forward to play at Pitt since Brian Shorter, and Mike can probably can do a variety of things better. He’s not Superman, but he’s on his way. All the Way to Reno, he’s Gonna Be a Star.

** And Mike has All the Right Friends with Jamel and James. Actually, it’s been my understanding that Jamel and Mike are indeed very close friends, and even more than last year, these two demonstrate remarkable chemistry with each other.

** With Jamel shedding a few pounds, he now looks At his Most Beautiful as a prototypical small forward. He still needs to tighten up the handle a bit, but he too looks exceptional on the offensive end.

** I am tired of people Second Guessing James Robinson. Not only did he shoot it well, but he was able to Drive effectively at times, passed and found shooters with ease, and even played a little defense, something that can’t be said of everyone tonight. The faster pace at which the Panthers are playing seems to suit him well.

** It was a Bad Day for Alonzo Nelson Adoda, and the same thing can be said for the most part about Rafel Maia. While Alonzo looks the part of a fine center, sometimes he’s second behind with where he should be. And Rafel needs to get off his feet quicker. This left most of the post minutes to Ryan Luther, to mixed results.

** I’m not exactly sure about how I feel about these three sharing the minutes at the five. For one, it leaves Sheldon Jeter left out as the Wrong Child in the Panther rotation. We know Sheldon can be very effective at times as a mid-range shooter. But with Mike and Jamel doing this as well as they did tonight, one has to wonder how our team would be better with giving Mike more minutes at the five to get time for Sheldon. At the moment, it’s hard to see how it would be. After all, only one guy can shoot at a time.

** Quietly, I’m gaining the Suspicion that Sterling Smith might be the perfect complement as our two guard, to the trio of Mike, James, and Jamel. He’s not forcing a thing, and has now hit 8-13 of his wide-open threes. I don’t know if the time will come when we will need him to create. But for now, he’s filling his role to perfection, as opposed to Chris, who maybe has more to bring to the table, but forced a bit, not always to good results.

** For most coaches, it’s often a situation where We All Go Back to Where We Belong. For Jamie Dixon, that’s certainly playing man to man defense. But we’ve now had two games against opponents who would fit at the bottom of the ACC where the man to man defense was terrible. Tonight’s zone wasn’t as totally effective as it was against Detroit. But it was clearly superior to our man defense which in both games led to Panther deficits.

** While I appreciate Dixon sticking with using a man defense, as there will be times when it will come in handy, maybe he should Begin the Begin with his zone. With the way College Basketball seems to be These Days, it’s a move many seem to be making.

** Can the Panthers be successful scoring points like they are, but not necessary rebounding or defending well? Of course we won’t know Until Till the Day is Done. But there are those who believe that better offense is what is needed for Dixon to get to the Great Beyond known as the Final Four.

** Regardless, the Panthers are always The One I Love. And I want them winning games any way that they can Fall on Me, regardless if that’s holding opponents to at FG% under 40%, or scoring in the 80’s.

If only we had beaten the 'Cuse tonight...it would have been an Orange Crush! ;-)

PItt basketball looked good I think? Not a bb expert but they looked solid.
We were a bit distracted with Alabama Auburn on one TV, Cow Pasture U and MSU on another, and the Pitt basketball game ESPN3 on the PC (hdmi cable) on a third TV.
Plus had to keep the blender going with the Margaritas!
LIked Young and Artis and our depth so I think we'll be ok.
So much for knowing nothing just my opinion!

A little more concerned about the lack of physicality and rebounding than defense at the moment. A time will come when someone has to bang inside. Gary McGhee, where are you?

I don't disagree, Del, but like I said, it's a different team and a different hoops world at the moment. You, of all people, should be thrilled with the scoring that you are watching.

I do worry that as the season goes on, things will slide back to how they were in previous seasons. Will we be ready?

Young is a stud however he needs to realize that even when he's hot and feeling that he can't always force it. I know this might be nitpicking but there were a few occasions where he tried to do a bit too much.

And I posted a few weeks ago how someone told me that Dixon really likes Sterling Smith. I think we're starting to see why. He's not likely gonna ever be "the man" but should be a steady contributor that does a lot of things well.

MYoung has way more range than BShorter , but around the basket hands down with no disrespect to MYoung BShorter was an unstoppable beast. If he had MY height he'd been in the NBA for years.

Not complaining about the scoring and I'm very encouraged by the outside shooting but I know most good teams have inside/outside scoring balance and that you can really pick up an offense and frustrate an opponent with good offensive rebounding and put backs and compensate to a degree for weaker D by at least limiting an opponent to one shot. We'll see whether this becomes an issue.

Completely agree with this assessment, but Michael is working his way into this conversation.

True ... although, to some extent, you've got to "let Mike be Mike."

Also, on two drives to the hoop, he was very, very clearly fouled and nothing was called and both resulted in missed shots.

Some stats ... and they ALL really matter.

First I counted 67 possessions, so our offensive efficiency today was excellent. And just the same, our defensive efficiency was substandard.

After the game, our overall Pomeroy rating dropped from #30 to #33. This seems just right. We are now the #15 team in offensive efficiency (also seems right on the money), but our defensive efficiency dropped to #80 (also seems right on the money).

This is good enough to be an NCAA team, but it must improve to be a legit NCAA contender.

If it does slide back with the officiating then ANO and Maia and Luther will be more effective because they won't need to worry about fouling so much and can play more physically.

By the way the 11 point win probably leaves us dead in the water with current Sagarin rating spot, I believe--about #30 or so.

Kent was Sagarin rated similarly to the Northeastern team that beat Miami so maybe we dodged the upset bullet Miami and several other teams rated higher than Pitt took over the last few days.

DT I agree. If that ends up being his overall game I say let him do his thing. I guess I was speaking ideally which is why I said I realized I was nitpicking.

Robinson shot lights out. So did smith. Despite getting out rebounded, I enjoyed the physical play down low as the refs allowed both teams to muscle down low. Luther looked lost in my opinion. But overall a good game for the panthers

Yeah ... lots of crazy stuff going on thus far.

Beat Purdue, and anything about us will make perfect sense. :)

I think Luther needs some more physical strength along with a little bit of a mean streak.

They're scoring alot better than I thought. Of course this worries me that they can keep it up. But so far so good.

I think it is time to Begin the Begin as the days of holding opponents to 35% FG and scores in the 50's are done. At least with the foreseeable future with the make up of this team.

That is okay. Michael Young and Jamel Artis take turns playing Superman. Yet sometimes the teams seems like it is from Oddfellows Local 151 in their approach. But it is fun watching this team play, a Pretty Persuasion from the former grind it used to be. Still. the team will have to make a Stand, in the place that they live. I do like when I see James Robinson Drive and others Driver 8 to the hoop instead of just relying on jump shots.

Just we have to realize that the Everybody Hurts is not applicable to our opponents anymore. Like to see them battle on the boards with the Finest Worksong, Unfortunately there are no NCAA sites in Pittsburgh, Buffalo or Cuyahoga this year but I think this team will make us Shiny Happy People.

--Was at the game and thought that Pitt's shot selection, for most of the game, but especially in the 1st half, was really outstanding. I thought there was only one "forced" shot in the whole 1st half, and that was by Jeter. Then Pitt had a few poor shots early in the second half.

--I thought the Pitt defense was better than the stats would show. To my eye, Kent State took a lot of tough shots and made more than their share of them.

--James Robinson sure looked cool and confident in this game. Be great if he could shoot like that most games. Would make Pitt a very tough team.

Go Pitt.

I saw it similarly to MajorMajors. I thought our shots generally were open looks based on superb ball movement while theirs were generally tough shots that they made. Young and Artis were sensational and made things look easy. Robinson silenced his critics and was a rock running the offense. Ten assists and no turnovers! Are you kidding me, bay-bee? On Kent State's side, Hall is really good, but as Dixon said, Pollard played well above his numbers and the coaches didn't see it coming. All in all, I was very impressed with Kent State's shooting. Dick Groat stated early in the broadcast that they were a good team we shouldn't look past, and I thought about that point when they closed to within striking distance late in the game, although as other posters have expressed, I too was never really worried about losing.

The rebounding was harder to excuse, but there was a lot of volleyball going on and the ball was bouncing around. I was thinking we needed a jumping jack like Jeter just about the time he got inserted, but then he made some mistakes and sat down again. Kent State was really good on the boards, and they played with a lot of intensity and aggression. Their competitiveness certainly provided a teachable moment to help the coaches prepare the team for Purdue. Our rebounding got better as the game progressed. Smith is a very good rebounder and made a difference when he was in there. I am enjoying his game, and I think we haven't seen all of it yet.

I thought the rotation made sense based on the game, particularly with how Robinson was dominating. I also was disappointed not to see Milligan against that team, but Robinson was really in the zone. Wilson shows a lot of potential and has drawn praise but based on his early showings I think he still tries too many plays as if he doesn't have a team around him, and he can't get away with stuff he did in high school and club ball. At the end of the day, I was happy with the minutes Robinson got. He was beautiful. The coaches must have felt the same way because they kept him in watched his show.

Point Guard Play through 4 games

Robinson

19 assists, 0 turnovers

Wilson

11 assists, 2 turnovers

Very pleased with both in this regard.

Why don't you repeat your hapless and asinine comments about Robinson from the other night? At least Zara has the brains to shut up for a night. Do you know what is more fun than making
fun of a bunch of kids? Making fun of a fat lazy ignorant couch potato such as yourself,

Your best post, ever .

I like Smith a lot. Has a nice 3 point shot, kinda reminds me of Ramon.

True ... although, to some extent, you've got to "let Mike be Mike."

Also, on two drives to the hoop, he was very, very clearly fouled and nothing was called and both resulted in missed shots.
I think Mike was p*ssed after he got basically mugged in the high post and took a couple forced shots. The defender almost ripped his head off. THE KS guy did pull the headband almost off. Mike is human and too often tries to get back at someone IMMEDIATELY after he feels affronted. I think the sequence you describe was right then.

J-Rob actually had a couple drive-draw-dish plays and slick passes. And he actually hit his shots yesterday. I hope he found something this game. I was pleasantly surprised by his play. He needs to be consistent, though.

Artis and Young were their usual great selves. And it's great having a shooting guard who can shoot and play defense.

I wish we played Jeter, Cam, and Wilson more. Jeter have shown to heat up in the 2nd half so far and all three are match up problems.

I think a big reason our defense looks so bad is because we never block out and the ball gets tipped all over on the defensive glass. Then when they grab the loose ball we are out of position to defend. I think our half court defense looked good. We were rotating well but only when we were in the zone.

I just have never understood why the only Pitt players I have ever consistently seen block out were Chevy, Blair, and McGhee. This is teachable and something Adoda and none of our big guys ever attempted. They don't even look to locate a man to box out.

On a side note was that Ontario Lett on the sideline? Is he a coach now?

I forgot about this one play, but I think it was artis in the 2nd half that had a really slick no look pass for an easy bucket.

After watching the game today, I came to a conclusion that defensively it is pick your poison. While were playing man to man the rotations were slow which lead to a lot of good looks for Kent State. However we rebounded much better during these possessions. The zone was much better at making them take contested shots, however this is where we gave up a slew of offensive rebounds. This is to be expected, in my career it was always a pain in the butt to get 5 bodies to box all 5 defenders out on each possession.

This team is really good offensively, perhaps better than Blair/Young/Fields if you factor out offensive rebounds, which I know you cant do, but just saying. We can really score.

The defense and rebounding is bad but college hoops is different and I think we'll outscore enough people.

Even with a 30 second clock, I dont remeber 1 possession going under 5 and few over 10.

Jamie has evolved.
