The popularity of the Penguins hurts Pitt more than anyone will admit.

Well the popularity of the Steelers hurts more. The popularity of any of the pro teams at the end of the day, hurts Pitt. People do not need to rely on their sports fix with the local college like they do in other places.

And the fact that at least 2 of the 3 local pro teams have been excellent for most of the last 25 years, well yeah, that makes those 9-4 Sun Bowl seasons less than interesting.

I disagree. Losing to Youngstown State, Bowling Green, and UConn plus blowing epic leads to Cincy, Iowa, Houston, etc etc etc is what has hurt Pitt for 35 years more than all the other red herrings combined. If Pitt wins more of those gut wrenching games than they lose then all of this BS about off campus stadiums, Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, old people, traffic, parking...become moot.

If the Penguins got sold and leave town, would you really expect more fans coming to Pitt games. There are few fans of all sports that actually invest in all sports.

Winning and success breeds large crowds in just about any city and fan base.
Pittsburgh is no different.
Start winning on a regular basis and the fans will come.

Pitt football hasn't done anything for a long time to earn great crowds. People will go to Pitt games when Pitt starts to be more than mediocre. To most fans, mediocre means 8 wins or less. 9 wins is a limbo area. If we could get to 10+ wins consistently for a few years, I think the crowds would be there.
