I think university revenue-sharing with athletes is going to get really murky really quickly. Each state may have different legislation. And taxpayer acceptance of some portion of the cost (direct or indirect) is going to be a political hot button.
It got me to thinking about a business trip I made to Berlin about 10 years ago. Over dinner with some German colleagues, I asked their thoughts about some of the other soccer leagues around Europe - England, Spain, Italy, etc.
I was expecting the conversation to be about soccer & styles of play. But it wasn’t.
The Germans were angry that the European Union had bailed out Spain’s economy to the tune of $100 billion plus…while some of the biggest Spanish soccer clubs - were receiving government benefits like being deemed “non-profits” - while spending ridiculous amounts of money on record player signings and transfers.
So yeah…back to America in 2024, I’m curious to see the financial shell games that university administrators will need to play to make everyone happy. And it will be increasingly hard to make covert decisions because a lot of people are going to want to know exactly how every dollar is being spent.
