Klopp. You’re on the clock!

Because we’ve never ever ever ever ever ever seen lesser coaches win after taking over for better coaches who exit….

Viera has been around a long time. Plenty of people will tell you he sucks. There’s someone I have in mind right now who will probably see this post and tell me Viera is a pathetic loser. And that might be true. Although he was hired mid season to take over for a much more accomplished Manager at Strasbourg when they were 19th in the table and he led them to 15th avoiding relegation. The following year (last year) they finished 13th so he has them headed in the right direction, but Chelsea ownership and him agreed mutually to part ways. He did his job. At other places, like Crystal Palace, he had a rough go. But he’s still better than Derp and coaching the national team is an entirely different animal.

I don’t remember Palace ever getting relegated but I do know that CP supporters don’t care for him. I mean, they sacked Viera to bring back ol’ Roy. But coaching in the EPL is a different animal especially at a club like Palace with the wage structure they have. The bottom line is Viera has pedigree. It’s not great by any means, but he’d be a fallback option I could live with if the US don’t get their man, whoever that might be.
Viera's not a bad coach but he'd be a pretty underwhelming hire, particularly among those convinced that the US should have a world class coach.

I wouldn't hire any of them now and would wait and see who's available and interested in the Spring, which would even allow them to coach in the Gold Cup.

If I had to choose out of that group, I'd probably roll the dice on Cherundolo, who played a long time in Europe, has won the MLS title, and had assistant experience in the Bundesliga, German U 15s, and the USMNT.

PV is not a good coach. i'm going to just go ahead and say i'm the only person who's watched him actually coach a team - as in, watch the team week in and week out. he's not the worst coach i ever saw (that would be frank deboer, who lasted 4 games). here's what you get with PV:

* no players get better under him.
* offense had zero bite. like, nothing. there was a game 3 game span without a shot on target. read that again: 3 games w/out ONE DAMN SHOT ON TARGET.
* defense was pretty messy. guys out of position, couldn't defend set piece very well.
* on the positive side, he didn't play stupid formations or play guys out of position. i'll give him that.

he provided a very unique observation in that the guy he replaced, also replaced him. pretty much the same players. there was a clear difference in just the organization and efficiency of the team. PV brings zero creativity - when roy hodgson clearly shows more interesting gameplans and attacking options, you know the guy is out of his element.

and the USMNT needs some creativity. we don't have the best players so you need someone who can get more out of them. PV almost doesn't have a personality whatsoever - he's the anit-Klopp.

of all the managers on the planet, i have no idea why the USMNT needs this guy. he's somewhat competent - again, not the worst you'll ever see. but not even mediocre. if his name wasn't PV, you'd never have heard of him as a manager.

There he is!! Didn’t want to speak for ya, but I knew this was coming…

Again, with what we had, competence is an upgrade. And that’s my point. Would I want Patrick? Of course not. But also knowing how incompetent our federation is, the rumored shortlist and that this is the 2nd time Viera has been linked, I’d be ok with him given the circumstances.

On the womens side, Emma Hayes dropped in our lap. She wanted international soccer so that she could raise her son. She also lived in this country for a while. In the womens game there are only a handful of desirable jobs and ours is at the top. This is what we need on the mens side. It’s not the most desirable job by a long shot. But there are attractive components to it. And we need a guy to drop out of the sky and shock us.

i think we went 11 games in a row w/out a win under PV. he's pretty damn bad. there's no way he's our best option.

bora was pretty good - what's he up to these days?

an italian manager? what are we, chelsea?

He's American. Followed him a little in the Bundesliga. I thought he was a dark horse for the US job given that he's one of the few American coaches in a top league but didn't think he'd be a top priority.

He has a good season at Stuttgart a few years ago and got fired in their relegation season. Pretty solid year last year at Hoffenheim.

It wouldn’t be the equivalent of getting Emma Hayes from Chelsea, but I’d take their former men’s coach in a heartbeat.

I just saw this splash across my Athletic feed. I would take Poch in millisecond. I mean say it doesn't work out and he doesn't do well, can't say they didn't try hard.

he's a good man. and thorough.
Everyone loves him. Which is the only thing. Tyler Adams thinks they need a ball buster and he could be right. Early last year, while I loved Poch, I questioned whether he was right for Chelsea and maybe too nice. Then the team started gelling so sometimes things just take time under new managers.

US is interested in Poch, we'll see how interested he is in the US.

Matt Crocker worked with him at Southampton, so there's at least some connection.

being serious for a minute: i really like Poch. getting spurs to a CL final is quite something. no idea why spurs moved off him - thought that was dumb. then obviously whatever the hell chelsea is trying to do didn't fit. would love to have him as USMNT manager.
