Well, this was certainly a far cry from the last time we played them. The game wasn't on tv so I had to watch on my computer and I didn't really start paying close attention until the 2nd quarter when it was obvious we had a game:
- I'm really encouraged by Patti. He's not going to be the starter this year unless there is an injury to Pickett but he's now put a start under his belt and we know we have someone that can improve after Pickett is gone following the 2020 season. He's mostly accurate and can clearly throw a deep ball. Experience will make all of the difference.
- I was hoping for a 42-14 type game but a win is a win. We all expected 3-2 to come out of this stretch. Duke is probably the best team we will face down the stretch and if we can run the table, UVA looks like they could lose 2.
- Nice to see Sibley have a day. It's a little concerning that we struggled to run the ball against a 1-AA and MAC team and I think it's as clear as day that our O line can't run block. We can pass protect which is good bc passing appears to be the strength of this team.
- Speaking of passing game, Taysir Mack hasn't had the same big play games he did last year but 5 games into the year and he's 130 yards behind his sophomore season total.
- Ffrench - can't fumble that ball. He's an electric player but needs to learn when to just go down.
- This defense is so much fun. 6 more sacks spread among 7 players and 10 TFLs. Everyone from MSU said wait a few years and you'll love this D and we are playing without both Camp and Weaver all season.
- Nice to see Kessman make one but you are really setting this kid up to fail by asking him to hit a 57 yarder in that situation. He's already struggling so just go for it there.
- Next week's game has the chance to determine the direction of our season. While we can lose to anyone, if we get to 4-2 next week, I think 7 wins is the minimum we are looking at and hopefully start to discuss 8 or 9. Duke smoked VT but they didn't look like giant killers, especially after getting murdered by Bama. We aren't as good as Bama or likely as bad as VT so this game could come down to limiting mistakes and letting our defense do our thing. Would be nice to carry a 3 game winning streak into the bye.
