There is 10 of us sitting in an area at the Rivers Casino watching some basketball games on tv. As we are talking one of the girls sitting at a table next to us made a comment to one of my friends, talking about how far the sport of women's basketball has come, especially the WNBA. The one girl made a comment about how she felt that a good WNBA team could give an average NBA team a run for their money.
We all started laughing at her statement thinking that she was just trying to be funny and she got upset about that.
This poor woman actually believes that would happen if the two teams were to play. I didn't want to be mean, but I had to explain to her that, if a game were to be played between an average NBA team and a good WNBA team, that it would not even be close. She said that we didn't know what we were talking about. I told her if they played a game between the best players in the WNBA and a random male team of five male players, say Steph Curry and Nikola Jokic and three 50 year old men, the game would not even be close.
In fact, just two the NBA players (Steph Curry and Nikola Jokic) would crush the best WNBA players in a game.
What do you guys think?

my closest friend went to Psu, and was on the varsity basketball team at a bigger high school in the wpial. He played on a team that would scrimmage the Psu women’s team in the mid 2000s and claims that they would consistently dominate the Psu women’s team. Just to put that into perspective. And I don’t doubt his integrity for one second. Just my two cents.

No different when people would say could Alabama football beat the 0-16 Detroit lions....NO.

Could a WNBA team beat and NCAA men's champion? Perhaps in the right circumstance.

Could a WNBA team beat the worst NBA team? Maybe 1 out of 100 times it might be possible if it was the greatest wnba all star team but I would agree with you and your friends that this would be very very unlikely.

And I am not coming at it from the "men are far superior to women" or " little girl...go home." I enjoy women's sports. But men vs women in basketball is not happening.

Bowling...yes.
Tennis? I think Serena in her prime could give many of the men on tour a loss.
Basketball? No.

I learned a long time ago that it’s pointless and a waste of time to have a rational discussion with someone who is clearly irrational.

This lady sounds irrational. While she may be correct that the women’s game has gotten better, she apparently doesn’t understand that the men’s game has gotten better, too, and the speed, height, and overall physicality of the men make her points invalid and not worth discussing.

I was an avid recreational basketball player going into my 30s, admittedly being limited athletically.

When I played pu w DII men's players, I was out of my league when they weren't in cruise control cause they were just too much for me.

I could play with DII women players because that was just at my athletic limit. That was really enjoyable actually.

If the WNBA team tried to play a system like the NBA plays…..no they wouldn’t win. BUT….if they were coached to play a slow offensive style , take charges, and limit the 3 point plays…..yes, they could win.

Go to the Track and Field world records, those women like Flornece Griffith Joyner are tremendous, superhuman athletes. They cannot beat the best boys high school athletes in the US, let alone the men of the world .

Why try to compare women athletes to men anyway? By doing so it tends to diminish the women's accomplishments because they are at such a physical disadvantage. It is unnecessary. Let the women (and girls) compete and be recognized by their achievements independent of men.

Also, when a women player is better than a man, she can sign a contract and compete at that level, no one will stop her, that is NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB, etc.

the best wnba team wouldnt win the wpial boys championship..

EDIT: I just asked my buddy who coached wpial boys hoops for years and he disagreed and said that a good WNBA team would absolutely without a doubt dominate in wpial boys hoops.

Yeah when I was in college (D1) we had a group of 4 baseball players and 3/4 guys from the golf team.

We would occasionally scrimmage the women’s team.

Never lost to them and most nights beat them by 20 including taking instructions from the coach on what to do ie: 2/3 Zone, M2M, 2-1-2 press etc so his team could get their reps in

1 in 100 times might they keep the score within 30ish, in my opinion.

I went to school with a guy who went to Duquesne for basketball and a girl who went to Penn State for basketball and played a long time in the WNBA.

When they would play each other 1 on 1 in the gym, it was, um.... cute.

There is zero doubt in my mind that the Pantherlair All-Star team could beat the WNBA champions this year.

*Looks at today's posts again*

Okay, there is SOME doubt.

I could probably contribute 2-3 minutes if you guys need. I am 6-4 so I’d like to think I could grab a board while I’m in there.

Grab a board, you say? Well hold on a minute... we might be able to use you for the Pitt men's team. You've priced yourself out of this silly little affair; let's suit you up in royal blue.

Actually, here's Serena's take from when she was in her prime: “Actually it’s funny, because Andy Murray, he’s been joking about myself and him playing a match. I’m like, ‘Andy, seriously, are you kidding me?’ For me, mens’ tennis and womens’ tennis are completely, almost, two separate sports. If I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 in five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes. No, it’s true. It’s a completely different sport. The men are a lot faster and they serve harder, they hit harder, it’s just a different game. I love to play women’s tennis. I only want to play girls, because i don’t want to be embarrassed. I would not do the tour, I would not do Billie Jean [King] any disservice. So Andy, stop it. I’m not going to let you kill me.”

women's tennis is a thousand times more entertaining than mens tennis. and i say that not because of the outfits or female attractiveness either but solely on just watching the matches..

Should have told her "you're cute honey, now go bake me a cake". JOKING JOKING

I would really like to see some of recent Alabama juggernauts take on the very worst of NFL teams from recent eras. I actually do think they would be competitive. But only if you could somehow capture the defeatist and indifferent mindset of the bad NFL team, because this is a big part of why bad teams are so bad; in their minds they’ve already lost almost immediately after the games start. Kind of like the late 90s Pitt’s teams when we’d play a ND or Ohio State.

The problem is that in such a hyped event (which it would be) the bad NFL team would muster up indignant pride in such a game and play much tougher than they normally do. They wouldn’t be the ‘normal’ bad Lions or Jaguars or Browns or whatever awful years you’d choose. So it wouldn’t be indicative. But I’d still like to see it.

I think some oddsmakers did a spread for one of those games before just for fun. Might have been the 0-16 Lions vs a national championship Alabama team (or whoever won it tat season). It was a pretty big total. I wanna say like 28 or something.

Didn't the US women's soccer team lose like 5-0 to a high school boys team?
Sorry it was an under 15 boys club team in Dallas lol and it was 5-2. So there you have it. The best women soccer players on earth lost handily to middle school boys.

It doesn't matter the opponent. I don't think people realize how good even the bad NBA players are.

The first coach to have her women's team scrimmage against guys was Pat Summit when she was at Tennessee and Tennessee was the best women's college basketball team in history. They had a couple male managers, and she got the managers to get a couple of their friends together to play. One of the guys had played some D3 ball before he transferred to Tennessee, and a couple of the other guys had played in high school.

The first time they played, which was the first time those guys played together, the women absolutely crushed them. The second time they played it was a close game that the women pulled out at the end. The third time they played Summit stopped the scrimmage early, because the guys were beating her team so bad she was worried that it was going to ruin their confidence. That was the last time she did that for a while.

I think it can be subjective and there are some outstanding women basketball players. That being said, I have never lost to a woman in a fist fight. Undefeated against midgets as well. We am not saying that to brag but my record speaks for itself.

0-0 👍

You are joking, correct? The best women’s team would lose to a top high school team and not close. Serena in her prime would not come close to any player on the men’s tour. A friend of mine trained with the Williams sisters when he was 18. He got paid $50 a set to play Serena. Only got paid the money if he won 6-0. He never did not win the money. The top female tennis player in the world might give the top U 16 men’s players A good match.

I have a 7 year old daughter. I tell her she can do anything as well or better than a boy…except for physical things like running, jumping, lifting etc. she’s currently comparable to boys athletically but the differences will really increase as she gets older.

It’s just reality. A decent high school boys team would win the WNBA championship.

You are correct!

I got dragged into running some sets with our women's team (D2) and it was just like going against average athletes who obviously are well drilled and coached.

I mean, just on athleticism alone, top 1000 100 meter times in the world are held by men. Men are just bigger, stronger....and maybe a WNBA teams against say the Steelers BB team that plays those events. But just think, any NBA team not only has elite athletes, you have guys who played as much, if not more, basketball than the ladies. It would be a slaughter.

I think she needed someone to call her an Uber or ambulance.
