There are a lot of folks out there reacting to how the game ended (and justifiably so). But I don't have anything unique to add to the post-mortem on Pitt-Penn State. So here are my thoughts, looking toward the rest of the season:
What am I looking for in next week's game?
- The offense is really starting to come together, though the running game is still a big question mark.
- Offensive line did a really nice job in pass protection for most of the game. That bodes very well moving forward. Run-blocking needs to improve by a lot.
- Pickett had a second straight very good game. Against Ohio and Penn State: 61 of 88 (69.3% completions), 693 yards, no turnovers. That's a damn good stretch. Especially considering that he's had no rushing attack to lean on. If he keeps playing like this, Pitt should be in just about every single game that they play for the rest of the season.
- The defense continues to be a top unit. Tackling needs to be improved, but overall, very good. Twyman is a monster, by the way.
- I said before the game that I'd be encouraged by a game like today's. Disappointing finish doesn't change that--they belonged on that field today with Penn State.
What am I looking for in next week's game?
- Another strong defensive performance
- More success in the rushing attack
- Sustained success in the pass block for the OL, and another solid effort for Pickett.
- Controlling the game clock like Pitt did today against Penn State.
- Continued good discipline, not taking bad penalties (which they did a nice job of today).
