The garage will be larger than the 798-space one originally proposed for Lot 1, the surface lot closest to Heinz Field. Taking into account the Lot 1 parking lost to the construction, the garage would net 615 spaces. It is being developed to make up for the 541 spaces being lost to new or recent development on the North Shore.

Construction of the new garage is expected to start in May or June. It is scheduled to be completed in spring 2017.

Lot was empty for Pitt games anyways. Steeler fans not pleased.

There should be a building ordinance for all new buildings in the Golden Triangle and on the NS to have integral parking for all new buildings.

Go up and not use surface parking…..IMHO

Surface parking, according to the city and development, is wasted space, revenue / resources not being used.. Hate to say it, but the tailgating community is not a top priority for the city.. You and I pounding miller lite cans a couple saturdays in the fall while sitting in a truck bed while our smoking hot 23 year old girlfriends play bean bags, isn't a real money maker for Pittsburgh.. Do you like how I said you and I have smoking hot 23 year old girlfriends?

Agreed.
Any developer and tax collector cannot stand to see even one square foot of real estate left undeveloped.

work in the NS so I see it everyday.. Upscale condos going up too so they need to park. It is what it is folks. Tailgating is going to join the ranks of the VHS, Gatorade gum, Saturday morning cartoons, as something that we really enjoyed that will never come back.. So let's get in line of Bettis Bar and grille, order some terrible boneless chicken wings and enjoy our 8 dollar cup of horrible domestic pilsners while we stand 3 deep at the bar.. See you there..

23 yr old girlfriends….I have blue jeans older than that but I like your style!

Except now I assume that those empty spaces will be transitioned to somewhere else, pushing the fans who actually come and park further back.

I dont' know htp, it doesn't make sense. So many times I walked into the game, going thru this lot and I swear to you, more times than I can count, this lot was 90% empty at kickoff. It doesnt' make sense, I know these spots were sold.. You are right though, the people that do use this lot, will get pushed to the next lot and so on..

Ideally, Pitt would come up with a better solution for PITT FANS, but since we "share" the stadium Pitt is forced to use the solution that works for the Steelers.

definitely a notch in the "con" category.. We are at the mercy of the steelers and the never ending quest for North Shore development.

What would that better solution be? In a city, land is valuable and big open lots don't make a lot of sense. In the middle of cow pastures, like at the Cult's stadium, it's different. Do you think there will be more open air parking with a stadium in Oakland?

not sure of the solution but I do know this, for a fact.. Man was put on this earth to drink beer and grill out under God's blue skies.. We were not put on this earth to sit on our car's bumpers and drink beer in a parking garage next to a "no grilling" sign...

I still wonder where the Rooney's will put their (tax payers) next Stadium. North Shore getting pretty crowded now.

And yes, they will want to build a new stadium someday.

I mean a better solution to the many empty parking spaces nearest the stadium. That looks really bad. If Pitt had control over that, they could do something about it, but since many of those spaces are spoken for by people who will never come to Pitt games, there isn't a thing Pitt can do about them.

My solution is that the lots nearest the stadium are first come first serve. Pitt can create a smaller premium location for those willing to pay more. The end.

Pitt does have control over that, I mean they only sell parking passes for that Lot for one reason and one reason only

They will soon start building out over the rivers. If I can't tailgate with my family and friends , as I have for decades, my incentive for actually attending the games will be greatly diminished.

This is so eloquent I damn near cried.
Bill Shakespeare would be proud.

Pitt could have loads of near campus open air parking at Schenley Golf Course...it's already tore to shreds after late July anyway from the vintage grand prix.

you cant destroy the last safe haven for people that golf with jean shorts on and no shirts.. Shenley is the only course left that caters to such a crowd, it would be a shame for this to not exist anymore..

Yeah, I doubt too many folks did a lot of tailgating in open air lots at Pitt games in Oakland.

Also wonder how many folks realize that many of those open lots that people have to park in up in the "middle of cow pastures" are unpaved, grass fields? When it rains, they turn to mud. Recall a game a few years ago up there when there was an early, heavy, wet snow (think they played IL). They had to close many of the grass fields they use for parking because of the fear too many vehicles would get stuck in the mud and slop. Logistical nightmare.

Some folks prefer that type of parking arrangement. I'd rather be at least parked on a paved surface. But to each their own!

What poster said they'd rather tailgate in mud over a paved lot? Has anyone ever said that, ever

It's amazing how many people don't understand this. Pitt sells all the spaces. They've made their money. What they can't do is to force people to actually go to the games. Not now, not ever. But if anyone thinks that Pitt is going to take parking spaces away from their highest donors (because that's who has passes for Gold 1) and give those passes to low level donors or non-donors instead they've lost their mind.
