Louisville was one of the worst teams in recent memory

culture might be worth something… as we’ve learned.

Hopefully these guys can divide the locker rooms at Unc and Arkansas too

And their team will be infinitely more talented next year. Look for Payne to hand over the actual coaching duties to the assistants and a bounce back year

What is the point of paying Payne if he isnt going to coach the team? Who are they bringing in that they are going to be so good?

I don’t think that really works quite that way-anywhere.

They may have some players, but they still won’t have a coach.

Yeah, Florida State is never any good… do you think Leonard Hamilton is coaching the team?

There’s dozens of examples of Head Coaches being CEO’s and letting his assistants coach, albeit most at lower levels.

Because he’s an elite recruiter with ties to RocNation who is sending him elite players? You love Leonard Hamilton. He hasn’t coached in 30 years

Hamilton can recruit. One of the worst coaches out there though. Is Payne really that good of a recruiter? I guess we'll see. If he can get players, they can win in spite of him like FSU does every few years

Yes. Parents and kids love Kenny. All time personality.

Ok. Well maybe his recruiting and allowing other guys to coach the team will work. It better because that was the worst coached team I may have ever seen. I swear they had like 8-12 talent but couldn't even win a non-conference game. I would be shocked if it works out for him though. In fact, I am predicting he'll be fired in February or March.

El Ellis was a cancer. I’m predicting they win a ton of games. No one could mess up the talent he brought in.

I think Leonard coaches his team. Just not very well.

If he’s leaving it to his assistants, they aren’t doing a very good job with the Xs and Os either.

Future NBA all star Trentyn Flowers, 5 star Center Dennis Evans, 4 stars Curtis Flowers and Kaleb Glenn and Sky Clark will shoot them into the NCAA tourney

You think Kenny Payne is going to coach a bunch of freshmen to the NCAA Tournament when they will be playing against 23 and 24 year olds who actually have a coach? They better get some transfers.

Yes. They have more talent than all but 3 ACC teams

They are freshmen, dude. This aint 2015. Freshmen dont win anymore. The lineup you gave me goes 7-13 at best. Now, that's not a prediction because I dont know what their final roster will look like but get back to me in October. If they are going to have all freshmen, they are going to really really suck next year.

Well Juwan Howard couldn’t do it this year with a whole bunch of young top 100 kids (several of which were top 35), an all-American senior 7 foot post man, and Phil Martelli as his lead assistant.

So I don’t like Kenny’s chances. Basically sounds like Memphis light. Bunch of top 30 freshmen players with no coach and only individual goals, to showcase their own talents for one year regardless of what’s best for the good of the team. If I’m wrong, I’ll be happy to own it.

You cant win with freshmen anymore. The kids may be very talented but they are 18. They wont be able to win enough consistently vs 22-24 year old non-NBA talent. Its college basketball, a different game. The notion that Kenny Payne is going to get a team of non-McD AA freshmen to the NCAAT is insane. Maybe BballinsiderfromPitt's worst take ever.

I respect BBinsider’s info, but I’m not sure I can get there with this Kenny Payne optimism until I see it.

If he brought in a bunch of talented transfers, then maybe. But expecting him to reach the NCAAT with non-McD AA is a bit out there.

4 wins on the season with the team Payne inherited made Stallings' tenure at Pitt look like the second coming of John Wooden. He had at least 5 top 100 players on his roster last year, not including his best player Ellis. You have to be a really, really bad coach to lose 28 games under any circumstances, especially to the Lenoir Rhynes and Bellarmines of the world. Payne's team showed no improvement as the season went on.

I think it's also telling that several of his players that had played under Mack regressed under Payne.

The only question I have is why any top player in his right mind would want to play for Payne given what he's shown in his one year.

Definitely an all-time worst coaching job. Worse than 0-19 Stallings considering that was a very good ACC and this was one of the worst.

Players want money, a coach who is cool, and to shoot a lot. Payne checks those boxes. Most players dont care about winning as much. Huggy even said AAU emphasizes that. Kids go and play a bunch of games at a tournament. You play no matter what. There's no emphasis on winning like there is on the playground

Still....that is the old paradigm right?? Load up with talent! But now we are seeing the value of physical and mental maturity and experience nullifying 18 year old NBA talent.

Steve Adams is the perfect example. He was good, but what was his impact. What would have been his impact in say his 3rd year??

Adams is a good example. One and done lotto. Had a good freshman season but not a real difference maker. I mean, yes, ok, we dont make the NCAAT without him but we also had another NBA guy in Patterson who was 23 plus Woodall. Louisville isnt making the NCAAT with Payne coaching freshmen. If he gets some big-time transfers then maybe.

Sky Clark is better than probably all but 2 ACC PG’s and he will be their starting PG next year. The transfer portal isn’t closed yet. They won’t be pitiful like they were this year and will make the NCAA tournament imo. Getting rid of EL Ellis was a great start.

What makes you so bullish on Clark? Certainly it isn't what he did on the court for Illinois last season, which wasn't much. He's a long way from a sure thing at this point.

7 PPG and a 1:1 assist:to ratio.

Louisville may get better players but their roster as is finishes 14th or 15th.

Nah they’re Uber talented. Will overcome Payne and he’ll relinquish coaching duties to keep his job. They’ll be extremely good.

You say you can’t rely on elite freshmen, which is what they’re bringing in, yet Kentucky and Duke do it every year. UNC had an old team they brought back that had finished runner up. Older kids don’t guarantee anything if you have a bad coach.

Are you high? Using the ESPN rankings, they are bringing in the #17, 58, 62, and 72 players. That's an outstanding class but its not a Duke or UK class. You cant win right away with players like that. The 23 year olds from the mid-majors are better. I can't tell if you are joking or what. Its unfathomable that you think Payne is going to roll out a team of non-Micky D's freshmen and make the NCAA Tournament. Freshmen don't make much positive impact anymore. You know this. They could very well finish last again.

Yea, they might not but they also arent going to make the NCAA Tournament with non-Mickey D freshmen. I cant believe you believe that. And they absolutely can finish last again. I cant predict that right now but with a team of all freshmen and one of the worst coaches of all time, that's a good possibility

So of course you make a proclamation and when called out about it, won’t back it up. Where have I seen this before?

And Flowers is better than all but 5 McDonald’s all Americans. He’s the elite of the elite

He's a freshman big. Aint gonna matter. They'll be playing on Tuesday

Ah, so you don’t know a thing about him. He’s basically a 2 guard but will play 3 in the NBA. He in no way is a big.

Correct. I dont. But I know he isnt playing in the NCAAT next year. Louisville is going to be bad again. Probably better. But bad. Its like asking the Willard/Cummings/Blount class to go make the NCAAT as freshmen and that was in an era where freshmen made big contributions. They dont anymore.
