Pitino says it isn't fair what the NCAA is doing to his players. No Rick, it's YOUR teams actions that are responsible what is happening to the current players. If I egregiously break the law and spend time in prison for it and that hurts my children, it's not the governments fault for enforcing the rules, it's my fault for breaking them.

He should apologize to his players for doing this to them, not pass the buck.

The ncaa hasn't ruled.
This is self imposed, so it's a silly thing to lament by Rick

Here is my suggestion for all of these coaches who complain that it isn't fair to penalize the players, because they had nothing to do with the violation: ban the head coach, and any other coach who is implicated, for 1 year. No pay, nothing. Then the kids will not suffer any penalties.

Think the coaches will go for that?

Great idea.

Pitino is a total con job. he takes the penalty this year, and then recruiting and everything else moving forward is unaffected. the current players are screwed, but they're water over the dam for old rickie. if he doesn't play this role, then ncaa penalties could linger over him, impact future years, and be more damaging to his program. of course, pitino had no idea of what was going on. the dollar bills in his pocket were for the lottery machine. beautiful acting, though he has had plenty of practice over the years. the ncaa just looks the other way again.

Pitino doesn't give a flying eff what this does to the current players. This was a self serving preemptive move hoping this will lessen or eliminate additional penalties. And they may get more anyway but you can bet your sweet arse he's more than willing to sacrifice the 2 grad transfers for the future.

Pitino probably deep down knows his team isn't talented enough offensively to win the NCAA's. So, he really wants his team to be suspended this year from competing. It's a little psychology. Of course he will publicly claim how wrong it is and act to his players like they got screwed but privately he is thinking to himself, better this year than when we can actually win a title.;)

I honestly don't think there's any other plausible scenario. It's kind of a loophole in the rules, Syracuse and Louisville now did in back to back seasons. It's a little shady, but it's also smart. If the NCAA is interested, they're gonna find something, and you're getting penalized.

To be a head coach, you have to have such a high basketball IQ and also have an incredibly competitive-driven desire to win big. I think a lot of coaches would sacrifice a season with little chance or even just a slightly possible chance to win it all, if they knew the other option was getting a season down the line being halted, possibly a season where you think you really have the best team.

The problem has stemmed from the NCAA being completely impudent and slow to move on any investigation. I am guessing USC football is kicking itself right now. How's those penalties at UNC and Miami coming along? And boy, Syracuse was really crushed right?

I am not sure when this really started, Penn State perhaps? When schools now feel compelled to lawyer up and challenge the NCAA's authority and investigation tactics, which has caused the NCAA to basically go hands off on most of these cases, oh they announce they are investigating improprieties, but nothing seems to happen.

And now there are these self imposed violations, which is like saying "ok, I will go to bed without supper", but knowing you are going to do that you spend a 2 hour lunch at the all you can eat Chinese Buffet. Then there is my favorite punishment, the removal of past wins or titles. Big deal.

The NCAA can go back to enforcing their bylaws and stop these shenanigans.

I hope the NCAA adds a couple years to the ban + cuts scholies. Pimptino then heads off to UNLV to be a greeter at Bellagio's Buffet.

Pitino is a scum bag, of that there is no doubt. However this self ban on the Post Season and subsequent statements by Pitno are brilliant strategy as others have indicated. Clearly they don't have the talent to make a big run in the tourney Take your lumps now, blame it on the bad old NCAA to mitigate potential damage to recruiting, use the NCAA as the bad guy to recruit kids by telling them they can be part of a great comeback story next year and move on.............Pretty sure UPS developed the blue print for this strategy.

The NCAA should just ignore any self-imposed sanctions. Nobody is self-imposing MORE than the NCAA would, so it is only ever a selfish act. Originally, self-imposing sanctions was a way of showing contrition, but as we've seen with PSU, Cuse, and now UL, they will self-impose and then turn around and claim the entire system is out to get them.

That's like Lehman Brothers saying poor people conspired to bankrupt their company.
