Pitt ranks 45th in the Top 50 programs, all-time. Of course, imagine what our record would be minus Howland and Dixon?
But given this "history", are we being somewhat delusional in thinking that just because we had a much better-than-average run over the past 17 years, that we are to be revered? Not trying to start a flame war, but being more of a realist. Maybe our best shot, if none of the strong mid-major coaches accepts an offer, is to focus on one of the best assistants out there - similar to what we did with the hiring of Coach Pat for football.
I know this wouldn't be very popular among those who want "only the best that money can buy", but it may be a more realistic approach. We caught lightning in a bottle with Howland/Dixon - at least to the extent of win-loss record, NCAA appearances, etc., and under them we are now in the Top 50 all-time.
There is no reason why we can't catch it again; but there is no reason to think that we can, either. With our "history", whatever made us think that we could actually become a true, elite program, even if we had made it to the FF in 2009? And this is not said by me in a sarcastic manner . . .
