Ok, two wins so far. Canisius was awful and couldn't handle our press. We had 14 steals while they had an almost unheard of 35 TO's. I say "almost" because our team last year also had unheard of TO #'s. We had an A/T0 ratio of 15/11 in the Bucknell game, MAJOR improvement. We'll see if that holds up against WVU (next game) and once we're in ACC competition. IMO we're an improved team because of our transfers. I posted in the summer that we now have tremendous depth in the backcourt and the newbies might be starting ahead of our returnees.
Marley doesn't have to be playing the point where she was a TO machine. Transfer Miles is a definite improvement there, although not a scoring threat. Battle however is proving as a Sophthat she was a legitimate recruit last year. She also can score and run the offense effectively. Marley not worrying about running the team can now concentrate on what she does best.....be
physical, draw offensive charges, and get steals. So far it appears she can give us some scoring, yet only have 4 TO's in two games. The main guard addition appears to be Jenkins. She's had 10 and 19 pts so far. She's physical enough, has a good floor game, and a decent handle. What does surprise me is the reduced minutes Malcolm is getting. Same with Perkins.

As for the inside, the addition of Faye is what we needed. She can score, is physical, and can rebound. She's had 25 and 8 pts so far, has a presence inside and rebounds. Elmore also is a good addition inside. We're definitely better there.Rust is also on the inside, a little undersized at 6'0'', but we have no other choices.

I've only seen us on tv, so this is knowingly limited.....just what I see so far. I'd be interested to hear what those seeing games in person think. I think we''ll still struggle in the ACC, but I see us stronger due to a more talented backcourt with depth, and better talent with some height inside. This program has a long way to go, but it looks better IMO so far this year.

Haven’t seen a game yet but wondering if we’ll still be a team with long scoring droughts. I noticed we scored 44 in the first half against Bucknell, but only 20 points in the second half.

Jenkins looks strong at driving to the hoop - but can she score otherwise? It is nice to see the number of Pitt turnovers significantly lower. Having a “center” who can score is a nice change…

I was at the first game and watched some of the second one on line. Our "center" appears much more comfortable scoring from the mid-range than she does on the inside.

Now that was only two games. But that was also two games against teams that are not very good. If she doesn't look comfortable down on the blocks against Bucknell, what's it going to look like when she plays someone like Notre Dame or Louisville?

Sure looks like it is going to be another long season for the women's team. They will likely get buried by many ACC opponents.

I see we were clobbered by WVU. Our box score is maddening. 30 turnovers! Our transfer starting PG had 6 turnovers and no points in 26 minutes.

Did Jenkins get injured - only played one minute. Someone shot 1 for 10 from three - yikes…

Long year indeed…

Jenkins went down with what appeared to be a serious leg (knee?) injury.

She appeared to be in serious pain, her leg looked like it couldn't straighten out and she had to be carried into the locker room.

I didn't see it but WVU is really good, # 15 in the country. They pressed and
obviously we couldn't handle it, 30 TO's. I felt this might be an area of improvement. HA!
WVU would be one of the better teams in the ACC. We lost by 28, and WVU has already
beaten Niagara by 69, and Towson by 44.

How good is their program?...Well, Iowa with Caitlin Clark only beat them by 10 in last
year's NCAA's. Iowa was # 1 at the time. Jenkins injury (hope it's not ACL) really hurt us.
Miles our pg had 0 pts., 2 assists 6 TO.s Faye, had 14 pts. and 12 rebounds. She appears
to be an improvement inside. We better hope that Jenkins is not seriously hurt.

Pitt women eke out a win against - well, Binghamton! Good thing that three Pitt subs, players from last year’s team, had good shooting days…

Add 25 more turnovers to the turnover total.

I did watch the highlights. It looked as though Johnson, Battle, and Faye were big
contributers. Also Malcolm played 34 minutes and had 9 pts and made three of her
four 3 ptr's. She has to be on the floor IMO. Marley on the other hand played 12 minutes,
and had 2 pts. She was 1-1 from the field and had O assists and 4 TO's. I honestly
thought she'd develop a shot in the offseason and would cut down on the TO's.....I
couldn't be more wrong.

As mentioned in the above post, 25 TO's. Also only 12 assists. This is what we did last
year. Binghamton is no powerhouse, so the win is nice but we're not seeing the
improvement we were hoping for or expecting. Jenkins wasn't in the boxscore, but
the announcer mentioned she was on the floor at one point.....she is needed big time.
We have a few weaklings up next, and then it gets serious. Right now it doesn't too
look good for us. I'd like to be wrong on that.

She was not on the floor, she is out for the season with the injury she picked up against West Virginia. Lauren Rust also got hurt and is going to be out for a long time.

This is really bad news. I started this thread and posted that we appear improved from
last year, but "this program has a long way to go." Well after a few wins and a blowout
loss to a ranked WVU, things have gotten worse since that original post. Jenkins is a
huge loss. She is probably our best guard and can score. Rust seemingly is improved
and was needed on the inside. She's also injured?... and "out for a long time."
Some players are going to have to raise their games, Marley for sure. Malcolm can
score, but she's going to be shadowed every place she goes. The ACC might be a
nightmare since there are several teams who are ranked.
Verdi needs time, but even with NIL, getting transfers to come to this program is
a challenge for sure.

New to the forum but I saw that you mentioned Malcolm. I just heard from someone in her community that she is graduating a year early with a finance degree. I know it has nothing to do with bball but I think it is pretty amazing that someone playing D1 is doing so well in school that they can graduate a year early. And with a degree that is not a cake walk.

And yes this year is going to be rough
Looking forward to the forum and thoughts of other individuals

Yes, definitely "amazing" as you stated. You might want to check out former
Pitt Bball player, Parker Stewart. He played for Pitt (2 yrs and transferred twice).
He was a tremedous 3 pt shooter. Academically he earned his degree in two yrs.
from UT Martin. At one time he was the only Div1 player to do this. He also has a
Masters Degree and was on his way to another.. He played at Pitt, Indiana, and
UT Martin. He took the maximum number of credits in the summer. He also took
20+ credits in one semester (unheard of for ani intercollegiate athlete). This wasn't
all that long ago, it's obviously a far cry from today's world of NIL. This guy is the
poster boy for the term "student athlete."

thank you for that info. Always nice to hear when athletes do well in school. You don’t usually hear that side of them

It was close for the first half and then Pitt went on an impressive run to start the second half. It looked like Delaware State might not even score in the third period. I hope Verdi taped his halftime speech.

Looks like PG Miles had a really good game - 9 assists and 5 for 5 shooting.

She had been struggling before today…

Good comments. Any of you posters actually attending these games?
I'd like to also hear some first hand comments and opinions on what
you are seeing live.

I was at the UPJ exhibition and the Canisius game. The Bucknell game was the same day as the Virginia football game, so I didn't go to that one. And the Delaware State game yesterday was the school kid game, so it started at 11 AM. I did not go to that one. I am planning on going to the Robert Morris game on Saturday, should be able to go to that and get home right around the time the football game is kicking off.
