I first really started following basketball around 1978, 1979. Anyone around 50 years old can appreciate. Back then the Roundball Classic was still big, as big as the McD AA Game, but the McD All American game still had most of the top talent. But what is weird, unlike today, the talent was much more distributed. In fact, it is amazing some of the colleges these kids ended up. By looking at the college chosen, you make have thought the McD game just took some jabrones or local kids, but no, these were (or would be) 5 star top 30 kids in many cases. I will give you some examples as we stroll down memory lane. To some of you older guys, you may remember some of these.

1978 game featured Mark Acguire who went to DePaul (then power), Scooter McCray (Louisville), Dwight the Cat Anderson (USC), Vince Taylor (Duke), Corny Thompson (UConn) and the late Landon Turner (Indiana) were the headliners. But also Lionel Marquetti who went to Hampton.

1979 Was one of the most loaded FR classes ever. James Worthy (UNC), Sam Bowie (UK), Ralph Sampson (UVa) Sidney Lowe and Derek Whittenburg (NC State), Isaiah Thomas (Indiana), John Paxson (ND), among others.....Ricky Ross (Tulsa) and Horace Owens (Rhode Island)

1980 was not as strong, still had Sam Perkins (UNC), Doc Rivers (Marquette) are the most recognizable names, but the #1 player that year was 7 footer Earl Jones. He went to....Division II University of DC. Can you imagine that happening today?

1981 was another superstar laden class. Mike Jordan (UNC), Pat Ewing (Georgetown), Chris Mullin (and Bill Wennington) St Johns, Adrian Branch (Maryland), Milt Wagner (Louisville) and Ed Pinckney (Villanova) would be the headliners. Then there was Mark Acres from the LA area...6'11" who went to.....Oral Roberts?? (on that note, I can remember the religious channel then would televise ORU games and I would watch them because there were 100 cable channel options)

1982 was not quite as strong, Wayman Tisdale (Oklahoma), Kenny Sky Walker (UK), Johnny Dawkins (Duke) and Billy Thompson (probably the #1 player but a bust at Louisville). But you also had a guy who went to Cal State Fullerton and also Creighton.

1983 the headliner was Pearl Washington. A bunch of Carolina recruits, (Kenny Smith was the best), Kentucky, Duke, Indiana, DePaul all the usual suspects. Then Marshall and Austin Peay. What the heck??

1984 Had the top players of Danny Manning (KU), John Williams (LSU), Chris Washburn (brought down NC State), Kevin Walls (Louisville) and some Charles Smith dude (Pitt). Also a kid went to UTEP. And here's the weird thing about some of these weird choices, this kid was from Long Beach California. Why would he choose UTEP?

1985 No real outliers but Danny Ferry (Duke) was the headliner Pervis Ellison (Louisville), Sean Elliot (Arizona) and Jerome Lane of this parish!

1986 was a weird class. No real big time names....f course my alias I used to use signing in places Rex Chapman of UK, Derek Coleman (Syracuse) was probably the biggest name.

1987 Pitt actually had 2 kids. Brian Shorter and Bobby Martin in what was probably the nation's #1 class. Mark Macon, Dennis Scott, Larry Johnson. I think the top player in this class was Marcus Liberty (Illinois)

1988 was another loaded class. Christian Laettner, Billy Owens, Alonzo Mourning, Chris Jackson (LSU), Shawn Kemp and Don Maclean who UCLA stole at the last minute from Pitt.

1989 Pitt had Jamal Faulkner who never made it here, Bobby Hurley. Kenny Anderson, Shaq, and Allen Houston were the headliners.

At some point in the Mid 80's, it just became all P5 or blue blood major conferences, but before that kids seemed to have less pressure to go to the biggest possible school.

True story: I met Mr. Pitt-girl out one night. I was with a friend who knew Mr. Pitt-girl's friend. We were kind of stuck talking to each other. He asked what my interests were. I told him college hoops. He looked skeptical. I asked him where he went to school. He said Illinois. I said, "Oh - Marcus Liberty, right?" Now what's so funny is that Liberty was a Prop 48 at that time so he hadn't even played yet. I'll never forget the look in his eyes. He asked if I wanted to get married. ;)

And??
You took him to the nearest basketball court, drove by him, and dunked over him a few times and the rest was history??

When I first met Mrs Buffett, she told me she was a skier, I said me too, so I took her skiing?

What she didnt tell me was that she was a super college ski team expert so it wasn't pretty.

Spent most of the day playing catch-up, muttering to myself I hope I don't die today?
But it worked out I improved alot. Lol!

"it's five o'clock somewhere"
Signed: Mr Buffett
Go Pitt & CSU Rams!

Leonel (correct spelling) Marquetti may have ended up at Hampton, but out of high school, he originally went to Southern Cal. (See link regarding his unfortunate end: http://www.tbo.com/plant-city/ex-prep-basketball-phenom-gets-life-in-murder-233111 )

My recollection of the Earl Jones situation was purely academic (he had bounced around between a few high schools, but in the end couldn't qualify for admission to any of the Division 1 schools that offered him).

When and how did all the shoe company horse$hit start? How did certain schools use this to their advantage while others were left out in the cold?

Marcus Liberty, King, 1987
The three-time All-Stater and McDonald's All-American went neck-and-neck with Larry Johnson for national player of the year honors as a senior. As a junior, he led the Jaguars to the state title. They finished second the next year, but Liberty did his best in the championship loss to East St. Louis, going for 41 points and 15 rebounds.

Who was the Chicago kid who was highly recruited that was gunned down and killed. At first I thought it was Liberty but I am happy to report he is alive and well. But there was another kid who was one of the top recruits in the country that was shot and killed.

-Lebron James. He wants Jordan status but ain't good enough. He bounces from team to team to catch Jordan,. And never will. Wade is little follow buddy,. It dosnt work anymore. After guaranteeing 10 titles in a row in Miami,. The both of them won buy still failed. Leaders don't exist now,. Just bandwagon jumpers. It's ruined sports. Even though great Tom Brady takes pay cuts and cheats. There still hockey and soccer. I guess I'll flex next year when the the Yanks dominant. We bought a title. yippee. It ain't the same. Nice original post... NBA is a total joke. I cant even pull for the Lakers out west. -Lebron and his sidekick Wade will want to join Golden State. One of the worst roll models in all time sports. Sports will be cleaned up the day Lebron, Billichick. Hang it up. The Yankees don't even feel the same. The Penguins magic the last 2 years was special. It should really be enjoyed . Steelers aren't big beating NE,. We are getting blown out again. With or without Brown. Another fact. Spots ratings have dropped 10 percent year over year. No one cares with this constant be cheating..

The 1988-89 Flyin’ Illini is my favorite non-Pitt team ever.

LaPhonso Ellis could have been in the rotation but chose Notre Dame instead.

When Pitt beat Florida on 12.22.88 on USA Network, that same night Illinois beat LSU, 127-100. My jaw dropped when that score flashed.

Great times for college hoops in those days.

The simple fact is that Vaccaro started the big all-star nonsense with the Dan. He used it to get his jobs with sneaker companies. The McDonald game came later, finally putting the Dan OB. I used to go to those games, recall seeing Wes Mathews Sr. outrun everyone else, Sam Clancy, Calvin Murphy, etc. Dwight Collins played center in H.S., was PA's point guard and high scorer, e.g. lots of fun, the best being Bam & Tinkerbell...Gene Banks...beat the US team. Writers named Banks MVP, but he gave the trophy to Sam.

The biggest bust; Les Cason (1971), coached in h.s. by Dicky V.

First appearance in Pittsburgh; Kevin Stallings,1978 Roundball. He was not the best player to come out of Collinsville, Illinois. That honor went to Tom Parker, (1971 Roundball), who played at UK and was recruited by Rupp

I went to every Roundball Classic. That game, and the Hoyle Tournament in Sharon, PA, featured future college All-Americans and NBA All-Stars!

Who remembers the City-Catholic All-stars vs the West Penn All-Stars in the preliminary game of the Roundball Classic? Catholic high schools played in their own league back then.

Those game featured some good ones; Mickey Davis, Darnell Roebuck (1968), Jack Wojdowski, Larry Anderson, Marvin Abrams (1969), Mickey Martin, Johnathan Marshall (1970), Kirk Bruce, Dan Bonner (1971) and Stan Boskovich and Ralph McClelland in 1972, just to name a few.

In 1973, the game was changed to Eastern Pa. vs. Western Pa. In 1974 it was Quaker State vs. Buckeye Stars. The state of Ohio would not let Larry Harris play for the USA team. They wanted him on the Buckeye Stars so that they would have a chance to win. For this old Panther fan, the most memorable shot was when Larry hit the corner jumper at the buzzer to beat #2 ranked Cinncinatti, coached by the original skum bag (long before Pitino), Gale Catlett. That shot was the highlite of a six win season.
