I'm not from the immediate Pittsburgh area, so could someone fill me in why Pitt has issues recruiting athletes from McKeesport (such as Hudson). Are the coaches there anti-Pitt? Thanks for any info. H2P

Psu has a branch campus over there so seems to be pro psu. Also I think the coach advises to leave the area or the kids want to leave the area. I guess Pittsburgh isn't far enough away. Regardless it sucks

McKeesport is rough area, coaches and parents want kids to get out of area, away from the element. Nothing against Pitt, just a victim of geography.

Is McKeesport any rougher than Clairton or Aliquippa, to name a few other places? I don't know the backgrounds of any of the kids from McKeesport, but every struggling community has some areas that are good and some that are not, and all of them can't be from bad situations. There has to be something else going on.

There is no hidden agenda, no Pitt hating coach. This is the reason.

Bingo! Other post above non factor for the 5-8 players that have actually received an offer from Pitt. Actually a brand new narrative that is irrelavent to these players.

based on nothing but it's proximity..

Yeah the coach just wants players out of Mckeesport street and I guess Pitt pays the price for being close. But if ya think about it how many kids have come out of Mckeesport and really went on to big big things. I remember B Short. Anyone else went big time then pro in the last 20 years?

Mike Logan & Russell Stuvaints went pro. Several have gone D1. The only that I remember going to Pitt were Jason Chavis and John Marzock, but they were both in the early - mid 90's.

I went to elementary school with Jason Chavis in Mckeesport. Played Mustang baseball together too.

The one kid from a couple of years ago starts for USC and is a beast of a defensive tackle. The other kid in the same class started since his freshman year at Texas Tech. He is their rush end. I think his last name is Jackson.

They're obviously legit. Remind me about the kid at USC!!!? For some reason I forget the kid! What's that kids deal? I figured there were probably 5 over the years but forgot about the USC kid!

Greg i forgot his name. Remember he signed with UNC then backed out the last minute. Then went to USC. He's been starting for them since his Soph year. I watched him in the bowl game against Wisconsin this year. He was very good. I want to say he will be a senior this upcoming year? I think his last name is Henderson? I could be wrong

Yep! Now I remember. He would have made a difference for us! Smith's assistant is making an effort for the job so hopefully he's not an anti Pitt guy

To those parents wicking a well rounded
education for their children remember this:
The world looks a heluva lot more like Pitt than the gated KKK community to the east.

I'd be surprised if the assistant got the job at McKeesport. He got the Serra Catholic job when smith was forced out a few years ago and was a disaster there in every way.

Its not that asst that Smith recommended. You're thinking of Eckles who was a serra alum.

McKeesport produces a consistent number of players. Anthony Leonard went pro for a few years and is an assistant down in morgantown. People were talking about TJ Neal possibly transferring back to pitt.

Yeah Neal would be a nice get but doesn't look like it will happen. I believe Leonard is going to get him down to wvu.

Delvon Simmons is a Texas Tech transfer and a definite NFL player. I believe there were 2 local players who went to Texas Tech at the same time, not sure what happened to the other.

Yes. It's big so there are some ok areas but parts of it are right up there with homewood, central wilkensburg, and middle hills as the absolute worst in the county.

I'd be annoyed if they were going to psu but psu isn't getting them either.. they got Short in mid 90's but these kids are going to Illinois, texas tech, usc, Michigan.

The other ended up transferring to Cal U, don't think he lasted long there either.

Your thinking of desimon green ended up at cal u from Clairton he signed with Texas tech but not sure he ever made it there after a year of prep school. Branden Jackson had a nice career at Texas tech .

2 reasons: the old coach is rumored to hate Pitt

The other is that there is a Penn State branch campus in McKeesport making McKeesport kinda like PSU territory which makes kids naturally not like Pitt.

Pitt has done well recruiting areas demographically like McKeesport (Clairton, WH, Aliquippa) so those are the only differences. The branch campus thing makes a difference I think.

This would make sense if they actually went to Penn State but they don't

when people are mentioning the branch campus as a reason, are they forgetting to use the sarcasm color??

Mike Logan dreamed of coming to Pitt. Hackett did not offer him. That and then Pitt being so down in the '90s may have been a big part of why McKeesport kids pass on Pitt a lot. I think Chavis was actually a teammate of Logan, yet when they recruited him they still paid not attention to Logan. IMO Mike Logan would've been a great Panther.
