** I thought I had a pretty fair plan.

** Because I missed the WVU game and because the result was what it was, I decided to go into this one with Michigan with a fresh perspective. I didn’t even watch my recording, and resisting reading most of the posts about the game, let alone post anything about it myself.

** After all, that game had the feel of one that got away from us somewhat, and I really didn’t think it was completely fair to begin judging this team until Big John was back.

** With this, I was actually looking forward to this one against the Wolverines. I wasn’t really expecting a win. But I was expecting a game. That wasn’t what we got.

** What we got looked like JV versus the Varsity. Or perhaps a legit P-5 team against an Atlantic Sun Conference team.

** Or maybe instead I should have said the Patriot Conference.

** When Nelly Cummings announced his commitment to Pitt, I had a conversation with a real local expert on college basketball and local talent who was less than impressed. His quote? “You recruit Colgate players, you get a Colgate team.”

** Then again, Colgate just beat Syracuse so maybe that comment set the bar too high.

** And this isn’t to single out Nelly Cummings as the reason for the Pitt loss. But it was hard not to watch him in this game today and feel he was anywhere near the level of Michigan’s guards. In short, he looked next to unable to make any impact on this game, unfortunately.

** The reality is that there wasn’t any Panther who looked like he was able to make an impact on the game, on either end of the court.

** But let’s start on the offensive end. First, Blake Hinson has come back to earth since his flashy start and has proven he not an All-American when his opponents actually guard him. He’s got to be smarter and not take contested ones that he probably can’t make.

** Greg Elliot has been competent, and looks to be an upgrade over Horton. But I think today’s performance represents his ceiling. Jamarius Burton has too often proven to be just a one on one player and Nike Sibande looks like he’s somehow lost his game, depending of course on whether or not you believe he had much to begin with. I for one thought so, and therefore I’m disappointed with what we’ve seen thus far.

** Maybe it’s fair to give Nate Santos a shout out for solid minutes, but he’s a bench player at this stage regardless.

** Big John will contribute more as he gets into better shape. But I think it’s also fair to say that the way he played today was often reminiscent in style of what we saw from John last year. So another way of saying this is that I’m not sure Big John in midseason form fairs any better on the offensive end than he did tonight.

** Yet, going over the offensive performances in this game misses the point. This game was nothing better than a failure on the defensive end.

** We looked both underprepared and unable to do anything to stop a Michigan offense which really shouldn’t be seen as a buzzsaw. Other than a little stretch in the first half when we effectively double teamed Dickinson, we almost never made anything difficult.

** And we offered basically no opposition in the second half. 53 points on 34 possessions (my quick count). That’s truly troublingly terrible.

** Our defense also seemed like a bad combination of effort and execution. The decision to go under screens allowed plenty of freedom of ball and dribble movement. We never kept dribblers in front of us, shooters were always open, and it wasn’t even because their All-American played all that well.

** I suppose all I’ve done to this point is just offer a far too wordy description of what everyone already saw. The bigger question is what does it all mean? Can we get better?

** Well, if the talent disparity is truly as much as it appeared today, that’s not a very good sign. I still have to believe there’s more to be gathered from our guys. Like we all know, Big John will still get better, and even if Nelly isn’t an ACC level starter, we also know he has it in him to play like he did against Wisconsin in last year’s NCAA tournament.

** This leaves it all up to Coach Capel. From this point on, he’s obviously coaching for his job. I have no reason to doubt his resolve. But I do doubt his ability. We haven’t seen it in his first four years here, and three contests into campaign five, one could say it looks worse.

** So any road back starts tomorrow at 7pm. My plan, like almost always, is to watch the game. I just hope this time there is a game to watch.

"That's truly troubling terrible"!! Great phrase. Never heard anything like it but it sums up this team and the coaching. Or lack thereof.

On the surface, this game didn’t seem too drastically different than the WVU game - hit some shots and took an early lead, played poor defense/made it look easy for the opposition, started to lose steam and then just completely lost it in the second half. Questionable officiating in both too but I feel silly complaining about that when they get blown out like they did.

“Can we get better”

From the last 2 games I hope so. If they get any worse - hoo boy. But even better will still be not so good. They have little no no chance to be good enough to show much progress for this program. I hope I’m wrong but I wouldn’t bet a dollar on it.

I think the recruit Colgate players line sums it up nicely.

I know I consistently annoy folks by usually saying officiating is fine, but I really think so in this case. As always, refs miss calls and they did in this one here and there, for both teams.

But the complaint against the refs was that they called everything in the WVU game which really made the game disjointed. The fouls ended up 21 for Pitt, 19 for WVU but in think the majority of the fouls were called in the first half. Regardless, 34-36 is about an average range for fouls called in a regulation game, especially one without excessive fouls at the end.

In this game, there were 31 total fouls called, 16 against Michigan and 15 against Pitt. So the refs had less of an impact on today's game than usual. Otherwise, there were a couple of calls today I wish Pitt would have gotten but also a couple others where we got a call I thought. In fact, I think the low number of fouls called against Pitt is indicative or their lack of defensive aggressiveness and intensity.

There is. We have a real team with an elite coach hosting an NCAA Tournament game at 7.

At the beginning of the 2nd half, one of the announcers made the observation that Pitt needed to foul more. Were you whispering in his ear?

VCU was leading last I checked. So, we probably draw Arizona State.

Question for you:

Do you think we move the ball better offensively and have better spacing than all previous Capel teams?

The spacing has been pretty good in the two games I’ve seen. (Missed WVU). Better than the previous teams? Hard to say.

We did not move the ball well at all today.

I thought, for the most part, we got good shots. I did not see many bad. Shots. I did not see forced shots at the end of the shot clock. Ball movement was not surgical but resulted in good looks.

when games get out of hand, Burton has a tendency to play hero ball.

First half shots were decent, but not nearly as good in the second half.

I think we will be better than we’ve shown as the season goes on but a few things really concern me

1.) Our guards can’t guard anyone. Nelly and Elliott are slow and Burton is more strength and brute than quick. Just all around struggle to stay in front of anyone

2.) Nike is invisible right now. Just doesn’t look comfortable at all. I’ve never been as high on him as those who thought he was some major loss last year, but when healthy he did at least have some ability to create and beat his man. Right now he looks unsure. Hopefully this is better by January

3.) Will John be both healthy and fully conditioned by ACC play?

As some others have stated, I thought we looked overmatched talent wise. If that’s the case then you better be great on D. We are not great on D. The end.

Our defense is so bad, I don’t think we can stop anybody.

Capel did talk a good deal about the defense in his post-game press conference. He sounded like us on this message board. Said we are having trouble with on ball defense. But, this is Year 5 and yea its a new team and all but being able to guard the guy in front of you is the most basic requirement in basketball. If your players are not capable of guarding their man, what's even the point. Its almost like saying the guys are having trouble dribbling. By age 22, you either can guard your man or you cant.

Defense is about preparation and effort
Our defense is terrible which is a glaring coaching dereliction

A lot of it is due to their lack of athletic ability/lateral quickness. You recruit that, cant really coach it. However, there are defensive systems as we see at UVa and Dixon Pitt where "minus athletes" have been elite defensively as a team. Capel needed to know this and try to figure out how this team can be better defensively. Eventually, we may just have to play a zone and pray teams have an off night shooting 3s. Teams are shooting layups against us.

Agree. Defense is primarily coached. What does that tell you?

If Dixon can put together a bunch of guys and get them to play great man-to-man defense, and he obviously did, there is no excuse that Capel can't. Except Capel is just a piss poor coach.

I think it will be January at the earliest before Big John plays like he did last year. He looked pretty overweight to me compared to last year.

Athletic ability is not why our defense is so poor
That’s a total bullshit rationalization

All future opponent sharpshooters should park their asses in the corner and bomb away with open 3’s. Just come down the court after the easy rebound and stand there until the ball comes your way. Something inherently wrong with Pitt’s scheme that permits this year after frickin’ year. Perhaps laziness. Certainly laziness on the staff’s efforts. Kudos to Izzo postgame as he gave his assistant coaches praise for something as simple as inbounds plays that help beat Cal’s team. Real coaching.

We haven’t had an effective inbounds play for 5 years.

I don’t believe it was unreasonable going into this season to feel mildly optimistic about this yrs version of the Pitt Panthers and finally feeling optimistic about the future of Pitt bb under HCJC . After all a potentially great pg fell into their lap , they had a returning big man who at times was dominate and should improve plus they added some experienced transfers who were upgrades to the players they lost and with the other returning players this team should’ve been JCs most talented and experienced roster . The addition of the twins was also a positive step in adding a dimension no Pitt team has ever had , seven footers who can shoot the ball . The future looks promising as the twins mature and with the incoming recruiting class , which on paper appears to be the best since who knows when , is signed . The tide has finally turned ! So what in the world has happened ?

We all know the situation with Dior , the injury to Hugley and to be honest the injury to Jeffress , a player who unless the light suddenly turns on , would only be a bit bench player on any decent team , cannot be anticipated , but ask yourself should WVU and Michigan be 30 pts better than Pitt under any circumstances ?

Pitt most likely starts the oldest most experienced team in the country so how can you explain their defense being so disjointed or the fact they’ve been physically dominated when playing D1 teams ?

The only conclusions you can come too are neither the players and the coaching are good enough . No way JC is coaching Pitt this year had he not been given such a generous contract extension . I don’t think it makes any sense in firing him now so let the season play out and unless he manages a remarkable turnaround pay the man and move on.

Not really. If Pitt players are overmatched physically, and they have been, it’s definitely a factor. Preparation, tenacity and strategy (good luck with that with Capel) can only take you so far. You’ve said yourself, correctly, that Nelly can’t be a high minute guy. He’s overmatched on both ends.

It’s not either/or. It’s all of those factors and we’re on the wrong end of all of them.

Kind of embarrassing seeing big John. He’s their best player. Looks like he got Burger King take out since last year. Still waiting for the work ethic part of his game to turn on.

Good post!. I don't think
anyone on here was
expecting a major leap
forward for this team."
As for the conclusions
you mentioned, yup I
agree it has to be both
the coach and the players
not being all that good.
I believe right now we're
no where as good talent
wise as Michigan, They're
more talented at every
position on the floor. Not
only that, they're much
quicker and are far better
shooters. Throw in the
fact that they also appear
to be better athletically,
and you get what we saw.
Coaching?..pretty obvious.
Tonight's game will tell us
a little more. VCU is one of
the better A-10 teams. We
should at least not be at
a talent level below them.
I'm not throwing in the
towel yet. I mentioned
above a few more pre
league teams we will
struggle against. VCU
IMO should be a win for
us. Also, the bottom half
of the ACC is not strong.
Let's see what happens.

We should just play zone primarily and extend it a bit to help cover the perimeter. We actually look decent in a zone.

I believe I saw the Panthers play zone for at least four trips yesterday. And I seem to remember them scoring on at least two of them. That may not be correct, but I do recall thinking that we did not put up any greater opposition to Michigan playing zone than we did playing man.

Our scouting and game planning must be non-existent. We left Baker and Howard open several times on rotations. That cannot happen. They had two shooters. That's it.

It is easier to guard the man in front of you have good lateral quickness.
It’s easier to overcome that with effort .

Effort is enough to keep in front of your man and contest shots

As I said we lack the preparation and the effort .
We have plenty enough athleticism
Sagging off and going under ever screen is not due to lack of athleticism .
Not getting defensive rebounding position is due to a lack of effort

This isn’t football with a CB who can’t run or beat a wr to a spot in the open field .

Taking away time and space in basketball is easier . You have 10 people within 24 feet from the rim .

More effort = better one on one defense, yes. But do we know that a guy like Nelly isnt playing D as hard as he can? He isnt athletic. Neither is Burton and the others. On ball defending is a problem if you arent athletic. That's why we sometimes have the "white shooter" debate on here. Some of us want that white shooter and others say we cant because they wont be able to defend anyone. How many times have we talked about Micah Mason? One of the Top 5 3 point shooters statistically in college history but couldn't defend (I'd have taken him though).

How teams overcome this is with help defense and rotations. Virginia is a master at this. OK, you got by your man, so what, now you have to beat someone else because help is right there. Rotations are on point. We dont have to be all-time great like UVa but need to be better at help/rotations than we have been

And how do help defense and rotations becomes a part of your scheme and executed? There's the answer for the reason we have been so pathetically awful for the past 5 years. And it's not just help defense and rotations. It's never that simple, but that's a big part of it.
