Miles out at LSU?

Between miles and Franklin, who is the better coach?

If you were the ad of a school looking for a new coach, of the two, who are you taking?

I am obviously a Pitt fan, but since 2000 have also rooted strongly for LSU (my daughter is an Alumna). I like Les Miles, but ever since the BCS Championship Game vs Alabama a few years back, LSU has been mediocre at best. Their losses and overall record vs their main SEC West Rivals (Alabama, Ole Miss and Arkansas) has been very poor under him. The lack of having a top QB - or at least developing one - has been also been an issue under Miles. He consistently recruits 4/5* players, but is not the best game day manager, IMO. I'm sure he's a great guy to play for, and would go to war for any and all of his players. But I doubt that the LSU faithful in Baton Rouge want to see another year of his mediocrity. My guess is that even with a win over TAM this weekend, it's better than even money that Les will be gone by their Bowl Game. Since they'd be spending money anyway, I'd be OK if they went after Jimbo Fisher

Les, should take the money and run. Then get a coaching job at another school. (someone will want him) A place where they will appreciate his coaching skills.

I dont know......

The folks at LSU are used to success and know how to win. I am guessing that they see the shelf life of Miles as minimal at this point.

Like a big time football program usually does, they get out in front of this backward trend and find someone to interject new life into the program.

I dont dismiss Miles as a coach. Extremely successful at LSU....however, im not so sure that it isnt the right time for a change.

Nothing official, but its being reported everywhere as if the process is underway to oust Les Miles. $15 million buyout.

Lol who does LSU think they are going to get who is better than Miles!? Rediculous decision!

You want FSU and Clemson to stay tough. It sets a bench mark for how good Pitt needs to be.

To ricflair and deer head:

You do realize that Les is 62 yrs old, right? Not to say that he wouldn't be one of the better choices out there for a program to hire. But you gotta wonder how many more years of this Les would want to endure? A $15M buyout could keep Les in lots of ball caps, windbreakers, and grass to eat for many years!

HAH Good call.

I really wish they had offered Les in both 07 and 11. He would of won tons of games, instead Harbs is healing a self inflicted wound. If this is it for Miles, I hope he has a great retirement.

I think FSU would stay relevant even if Fisher left. Their program will find a capable replacement, just as Clemson's would if Swinney were to go. But I think Jimbo is the more likely of the two to be looking elsewhere this year. Dabo may want to consider holding out for the Bama job when Nick Saban decides enough is enough.

I'll pretend to take the question seriously. I don't think you can compare the two at this point in their careers. No way would Les win as much at Vandy as Franklin. I'm fairly certain about that.

Franklin has yet to coach a team with any kind of comparable talent. I don't think Franklin can hang with Les when it comes to recruiting.

Jackie Sherrill once said Bear Bryant told him the three most important things about coaching are #1 Recruiting. #2 Recruiting.#3. Recruiting. That said, I would take Les.

Save weather, and paying boosters, we have everything a school could possibly offer, and we went on hard times. It happens. FSU was nowhere until Bowden got them going.

I'm not completely sold on the "we gotta have a (graduate of this university) man" to run our program; but I do think that Miles would've done much better than RichRod or Brady Hoke. Perhaps UM IS one of those programs where being a legacy is a bonus.

As for Bowden and FSU - Bobby was a good ol boy from Alabama, so he knew the territory and had a winning record from his days at WVU. FSU was starting to go down a bit toward the end of Bowden's reign, but they did the smart thing by hiring Fisher to acclimate to their program (as OC) before taking over the HC job

LSU was not jack for a very long time. They hit on Saban and then Miles.

Not about money. He will coach again. I doubt he wants retired by some coonass morons.

Not sure that I agree that "LSU was not jack for a very long time". They've always been a relevant program. They have an all-time winning record vs all of the SEC teams save for Alabama, Florida and Tennessee. And their record vs UF is nearly .500

As for not wanting to be retired by "some coon ass morons"; well, I think Les would be just fine with a retirement package of $15M, coming from the "Cajun Coffers". He won't hold a grudge . . .

While I don't think he should be let go, I'm sure they'll end up being ok.

He is an interesting coach. The one thing that struck me about him is that quite a few times he made an utterly wrong decision that ended up turning out alright.

LSU is going to regret this in a major way. My fear is Miles ends up in the Coastal, making our road harder.

I respect Les Miles, but let's be honest. A lot of coaches would have had ton of success there taking over from Nick Saban.

He did just as well if not better than Saban and he had the distinct disadvantage of having to coach against Saban, not to mention the Mississippi schools are much improved and Texas A&M

I'd have to double check records, but the decline in his WL record may be directly related to Texas AM joining and the Miss schools becoming respectable.

They aren't as good a UGA historically either. That puts them as at best the 5th best program in the conference historically. That sounds like middle of the pack.

Are you kidding? Miles ha a NC under his belt as well as some championships in the toughest conference of them all. Regardless of how anyone feels about Miles these days, that one's not even close.

Here is a spread sheet of the all time record of the SEC Teams for Football:

1 Alabama 850–325–43 .716 24 15
2 Tennessee 811–367–54 .680 13 6
3 LSU 762–401–47 .649 11 3
4 Georgia 778–410–54 .648 12 2
5 Auburn 742–421–47 .633 8 2
6 Florida 699–401–40 .631 8 3
7 Texas A&M 710–461–48 .602 0 3
8 Arkansas 692–479–40 .588 0 1
9 Mississippi 645–501–35 .561 6 3
10 Missouri 663–534–53 .552 0 0
11 South Carolina 584–552–44 .514 0 0
12 Vanderbilt 585–591–50 .498 0 0
13 Kentucky 588–598–44 .496 2 0
14 Mississippi State 532–558–39 .488 1 0

Columns reflect win/loss; win percentage, conference titles and "claimed" national championships. Facts show that at #3 all time, LSU is pretty relevant. Please get your facts straight before spouting off. Thanks

If asked for the sake of td. He clearly stated that miles would have not done as well at vandy as Franklin did. Exactly the kind of response I thought I would get

Why in the world would Jimbo want to go to LSU. FSU is the better job, better recruiting base, just as rabid fans and an easier road to a championship.

Honestly, it is ludicrous to fire Les Miles after his success. You are going to fire a guy likely going 10-2?

Or is it.

I think Miles is a decent, not great coach, who is in the middle of a fertile recruiting area where he can get kids from Texas to Florida and all along the Gulf Coast (memo to TD, that is why he is a "great recruiter", LSU is in a more fertile area than even Miami). LSU pretty much lines up every game with more talent than any team they face except for Alabama.

If they are willing to pony up the money to buyout Miles, then they can go after anyone else not named Saban. And on that note, they may go after Jimbo, but honestly, is Jimbo Fisher that great of a coach, or is FSU too big to fail and he rode Jameis Winston's success?

I'm just left scratching my head about the 15 mil buyout and the 2 mil supposedly for his assistants. That's insane in my opinion. Just hard to wrap my head around that!

to pbrad and recruits:

Jimbo Fisher was the OC under Nick Saban from 2000 to 2004 and then stayed on another two years to be the same under Les Miles. He knows the area and was appreciated for his ability.

BTW, Les and the LSU program has been in a funk (record-wise) ever since losing in the BCS Championship Game to Alabama after the 2012 season. And getting worse. Despite recruits with multiple stars, their kids are not developing on the field, especially at the QB position. Fournette looked like the next coming of Adrian Peterson until defenses adjusted. Harris has been too inconsistent to balance the offense. I realize injuries have hurt, but as we all know, it's "next man up", and the "next men" haven't been ready to do their jobs.

In a way, LSU's program is a lot like many other of the "blue bloods" (Ohio State, Michigan, et al) whose fan base is rabid and large and demanding. The fans of LSU travel as well or better than any other college team. Losing four straight to Alabama; losing to its arch rival Ole Miss (and embarrassingly); losing to Arkansas consistently under Miles; the recent Bowl losses . . .

Look, I know we Pitt fans would give our left you know what to have the kind of program as LSU. We don't and in today's college football climate, never will. But being, albeit within the last 15 years, a pretty active Tiger fan, I know that the patience has run out for Les. He may win this week vs TAM, but even if he does, his record will be 8-3 / 5-3 in the SEC W, and will again settle for a lesser tier bowl than expected. High standards, I know, but when you've won two NC's in the past 15 years and played for another, the bar is raised a lot higher.

LSU fans have thought Jimbo Fisher hung the moon since his days as OC in Baton Rouge under Saban. He is most likely #1 on their wish list. I wouldn't be suprised if Fedora isn't near the top of their list as well.

I'm sure there are many LSU fans who'd love to see Saban on their side of the field, instead of 'Bama's. My guess is that they try to hit a home run with an established coach - preferably one who's around 50 or so - and rebuild (to an extent). If you go to their Rivals website, their 2016 recruiting class is littered with top star athletes. But what Les (and his assistants, in particular) has not done is develop a good QB. I could only imagine what our guy (Peterman) could do as their QB.

With the LSU ties & Jimmy Sexton as his agent, you know Jimbo Fisher is getting ready to have a Brinks truck in his driveway dumping money everywhere. FSU better get ready to pony up.
