I was surprised how high Pitt was in the mock selection process today. Basically, the media uses the same sheets, info that the Selection Committee uses, and they put out a seed list.

Pitt was 25th, which seems REALLY high. Here's the field:

FYI - Last 4 out of the field were Seton Hall, Valpo, Washington, and Chattanooga.

Maybe 9-9 get us in.....and comfortably?

Definitely a surprisingly high position, only a couple slots below Duke and ND right now but I think that will definitely change by year end. That also has FSU in the field but Clemson nowhere to be seen. I know Clemson's early OOC losses are killing them, but they are already through the meat of their ACC schedule and could conceivably finish the regular season with only 1 more loss. Could push them into the bubble discussion at year end if that happens.

I couldn't figure out what the green and red highlighted teams meant. Originally thought they may have been highlighting the conference champs/auto qualifiers but that definitely isn't the case.

I think GREEN means conference champs, RED means Bubble.

Clemson's RPI is so bad, I don't think they are close right now. Plus, they don't have many games left that can help them, but a bunch of games that could hurt them, like games @NCST, @GT

Yeah you're likely right on the red being the bubble teams. And the Green are the conference champs. I was originally guessing that as well but then dismissed it because there was no green highlighted ACC team and Nova wasn't highlighted. But they must consider the ACC tourney champ a toss up so they aren't picking one yet. Conversely, they're already claiming Mich St B10 tourney champ.

Most surprising though if the green really indicates predicted conference champ - they have Xavier over Nova!!

It's always based upon "if the season ended today"
which it doesn't.
our pragmatic view is because we know what lies ahead for us in the next 2 weeks...
-but it's better to be firmly "in" for the moment, than be on the outside.

They still play BC twice. That's a killer for their RPI - BC is 192 right now. Plus I'm going to bet that BC beats someone before the end of the year, just can't imagine going without a win in 18 straight. A loss to BC knocks Clemson out completely unless they win the ACC tourney.

Clemson could end up being a good test case of how much stock the selection committee puts on Conference standing and late vs early season performance. You are correct that their remaining schedule isn't going to help their RPI win or lose because of how weak that remaining schedule. But there is also a good chance they will finish 12-6 in the ACC conference and in the top 5 or 6 in the standings because of it. They get left out with that conference resume in what is considered one of the stronger conferences and that will really drive home that the selection committee doesn't put much weight on conference performance.

Win 3 more regular season games and we are in.
I can't agree with you that it's as easy as just winning 3 more regular season games. That might get us in, but if those 3 wins are against VT, GT and WF it will be highly dependent upon how a host of other schools finish out the season.

12-6 and Clemson is in for sure. 11-7 with a UVa win will do it as well.

Maybe they are counting our half win against Gonzaga?

Seriously though, I think people are overlooking what is now a top 25 RPI win on the road at ND, as well as being 2-1 versus RPI 26-50 and 4-1 versus 51-100. I would not be surprised at 9-9 getting us in.

this should show it a little better in terms of locations, seeds etc.

BTW it's ridiculous that Villanova can plan their 16 and 8's at Wells Fargo. They play multiple regular season games there... It's not like Pitt who at least only plays 1 game a year down at Consol.

There is a rule that if you play more than a certain number of games at an arena during the year it is considered a home arena for the tournament. I believe that number is three, and Villanova plays three games this season at Wells Fargo. Smart scheduling on their part.

Yeah there are a few head scratchers on here. Oregon St getting an at large bid is one. BYU winning the WCC over Gonzaga and St Mary's is another.

You may be right about the Gonzaga game. At the time, they said the committee would take it into consideration, which they certainly should. I'm not well versed enough on the RPI to know the impact of that game, win or loss, would have on our RPI, but possibly it's enough to push us up a line or two from where most of us were expecting.
