From what I have heard, it sounds like the negotiations got Pitt about 5 million out of this. Barnes was in a tough spot. He wasn't going to make a move for at least two years (probably), and he has only been here for two seasons. That was part of it. Once this possibility came up, he had to be diligent and not let him walk for nothing. It basically became a business deal. Ticket sales and donations were shrinking, and the contract was huge. So for both sides, this was a nice soft landing. Forcing TCU to pay the entire buyout was probably a pipe dream. I heard the TCU boosters basically put together about 30 million for this to happen. 4 million and change to pay off Trent Johnson, about 5 to Pitt, and most likely around 3 million a year for Dixon. Rumors are that the deal is for 6 years but we will see. So those numbers would align with that total figure.
Just as an interesting note, I have heard that Sean Miller does not have a buyout in his contract. Instead, Arizona offers a bunch of stock and if he leaves, he forfeits a corresponding amount. I have no idea how it works or if it is true, but someone told me that last night.
For this search, money will not be an issue. Barnes wants to make a big splash and have both programs set for years. It has been a very eventful start for him, but he has a chance to put his touch on this. He understands that you get what you put into it in college. This is not old Pitt. These guys are big thinkers and the ACC is generating a ton of money.
