Pitt lost because we gave up too many big plays early and couldn't finish two drives. Penn State got the two big bounce plays (Ford's pick called back, 57 yard FG) and our line can't push it in from 1st and 1.
Putting that on the head coach solely is not ludicrous; it is very far beyond that and the actual word for it is probably an insult.
Coaching made the wrong calls on probably 1st through 4th down. If they go for it on 4th and don't score- at that point, seems likely- we still don't win and the straw man is something else.
Defense played very well. If the couple of big plays in the 1st half don't happen, we're probably in the win column here. Stocker impressed me. I think up front we didn't match up well during the run, offensively or defensively in the second half, but our pass rush was good and Penn State responded well to start doing quick drops. Even so, that was only worth one touchdown.
Offensively, we need more points and to finish drives. I think our emphasis on trying to run early wasn't effective, and V. Davis probably deserved more snaps. AJ Davis played well out of the backfield on passes, and if they could've gotten that one to him, or that one throw across the middle to Ffrench late...
By the way, my opinion would've been to QB Sneak 4 times, even with the push up front. You just seem too likely to make it if you do that.
We were a few plays away, but that wasn't the consensus going into this game, even here. So the team basically overperformed, and that's a credit to the players and coaching. UCF looks like a huge challenge, but I think blowing it up as a preferred response is ridiculous.
Still looks like a 6 to 7 win team, which is what I would've told you going into this one. Nothing changes. We gotta be Florida State fans tonight, because we're good enough to compete for the division still.
