Hire Salem pay him 450,000. Hire a young buck with super strong recruiting ties pay him 400,000 and like an oc in waiting.

Take the rest of the additional money and extend narduzzi or upgrade d staff.

Hopefully Salem picked up a little of Canada's offense.

Pass. You cannot ask any new OC to run MC's offense, it doesn't work like that. You cannot ask somebody to be something they are not.

Pass on Salem. Narduzzi already did twice. Imagine this, hire a real OC that has some recruiting chops.

This staff needs a couple more salesman.

Idk who I would go after as their really isn't many headline OC out their that are really worth a mill that u want that can run the same offense, the QB coach for USC they run a similar offense if u want to take the risk

I wasn't totally serious lol. But on a real note, it would be nice to get a staff here that prefers or wants to be at Pitt.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.

Foge wanted to be at Pitt. How did that turn out?

Matt Canada wanted to be at Pitt. But LSU offered him "Eff You" money.

Go find the next guy that can leverage the weapons Pitt has on the roster and can breakdown film.

I like Beck at OSU. He checks a lot of the boxes and makes ~$500k...we now have shown the tolerance to top that. Maybe he will stick around past Christmas next year.

Pitt as a program isn't at a place right now where someone is going to want to come here as their final stop. Maybe we get lucky and put the right combination in place of coaches, talent, and financial support that CREATES a program with long term sustainability. We're not there yet.

Until then, next man up who can continue the progress.

I don't want Salem, but you do realize he has been an OC before, right? He's also one of the best recruiters on staff.

You think beck would come here? I think he's probably one of the better options that we could even possibly get. I don't see any reason why we wouldn't give him a significant raise, not quite what they offered Canada but proabably slightly less.

I have no idea. I don't know Beck and I've never vetted a major college coach.

But I do know that money talks. And if you are baiting your hook with seven figures, you can do some serious trophy fishing.

He wanted to be here until he got a better offer.

If you are paying 7 figures for an OC, it better not be Tim Beck

I don't know...he's had success at Nebraska and OSU in a coordinators role. He also has focused on quarterbacks in the past and he has recruiting ties to Ohio, Texas and Florida. He's another Youngstown guy.

I think Pitt could do worse. Barnes...er, I mean...Gallagher and Narduzzi will find the right guy, I'm sure.

Zach Azzanni fits that criteria. He is a very good recruiter. He is also very close with Antonio Brown. You would have 2 people working on a recruit once he came into the UPMC Complex.

Agreed. And if Tim Salem gets passed up a 3rd time, does he leave? I'm ok with that if they fill in a fantastic recruiter to fill his spot.

Not sure Azzanni is an accomplished OC, but he has some experience, at least. Very good recruiter, though. I'd be ok with Azzanni just because I feel like there is upside in the recruiting and I don't think we are going to get a sure thing OC, no matter what.

Perhaps a good solution is making them Co-coordinators like is so popular now. Maybe that appeases both of them.

Yeah, but Canada was nowhere near a sure thing OC either.

Sure. It depends on how you define it, but Canada was proven to be a capable OC at the P5 level, even if people disagreed on his overall ceiling and potential impact. Obviously he exceeded the wildest expectations in terms of coaching. Canada was a "sure thing" to be at least an average OC, IMO. Azzanni is a position coach and has never been a P5 OC and only has 1 season as an OC, at all. He is a recruiter with at least some exposure to calling plays. He would be all faith on the game planning and play calling sides of the job.

I'm all about someone we can nickname the "Azz Man" joining our staff!

If you have co-coordinators, you don't have 1...

Meh, it isn't the same as QBs. Many teams give the co-coordinator titles out to appease people and make raises more easily justified. 3 of the top 4 teams in the country do it. Two of them do it on both sides of the ball.

So why even say he wanted to be here is my point?
It's just a job

I think we are arguing the same point.

He did want to be here. He took the OC job. A "better" job was offered at LSU. He will want to be there until a new "better" job is offered or he gets fired.

It's life. Canada has moved on, Pitt football will move on.

If the answer was just finding someone to coach who would never leave, offer the gig to Armand Dellovade and call it a day.

Oc's don't typically recruit. Salem would be one of the better recruting oc's in the college football.

That really isn't true. In fact, at a lot of the best schools the coordinators are the best recruiters. That is one reason I would have never worried about losing Canada to Alabama. Saban would never hire someone who wasn't a top flight recruiter.

some do, some don't. for a staff chock full of recruiters they don't need an OC to recruit. for a staff that doesn't have a bunch of recruiters, its need more.

what i'm trying to say, its not a one size fits all.

you don't have to be a top-flight recruiter to recruit at Alabama. All you have to do is say "I'm here from Alabama" and the players sign with you.

The name Alabama recruits itself.

That is completely and totally false. You have to be a fantastic recruiter to get the absolute best players, which every school wants. The ability of those guys as recruiters is what makes the difference between Alabama being great or Alabama being just another team in the SEC. Just being from Alabama might get them a top 15-20 class, but guess where that puts you in the SEC? The bottom 1/2 to bottom 1/3.

that might have been true prior to Saban returning Alabama to where it is now...

but right now, recruiting at Alabama for football is like recruiting at Duke for hoops.

as long as Saban and Coach K are in those respective jobs, it really doesnt matter how well their assistants recruit. The recruiting at those schools is on auto pilot right now.

mike shula and mike dubose want to say hello. when saban arrived it had been a long time since bama was good.

I don't know how to tell you it any clearer, but you are 100% wrong. They fight tooth and nail for kids because they are going after kids who are #1 targets of every school recruiting them. If you switched our staff for theirs and kept the same HCs Pitt would land a top 10 class and Alabama would struggle to still land a top 10 class, instead of the #1 every single year. The staff, their ability, and their work ethic are monumentally important.

Alabama has had the #1 or #2 rated recruiting class on Rivals for six straight years... despite a lot of turnover of staff under Saban during that time.

The one constant is Saban. As long as he is there, it simply doesn't matter who is working under him. *HE* will close the deal.

The same is true for Duke basketball. Coach K lost his top recruiter and assistant two years ago.... Steve Wojciechowski was an assistant at Duke for fifteen years... from 1999 to 2014. He left for Marquette and Duke's recruiting hasn't missed a beat. Why? Because Coach K is what matters, not his assistants.

The same is true for Saban.

You or I could recruit 5-stars to Alabama working for Saban.... as long as he is there to close the deal, they'll always get the players they want. The past six years prove this, despite the turnover on Saban's staff. You think their offensive recruiting is going to suffer now that Kiffin is gone? Bet me a dollar.

The OC at Pitt needs to be a X and O guy first, second and third. PN turns the whole offensive responsibility over to that guy. Recruiting isn't and shouldn't be a focus.

If Pitt offered someone 7 figures- the guy better walk in the door as the consensus best OC in the ACC (like Chad Morris was considered) and a quick step away from a HC job.

Unfortunately, that will have all of us talking about a new OC next year as well.

"Despite a lot of turnover"? He hasn't had a lot of turnover. He had Kirby Smart the whole time, until this year. He had Kiffin the past 3 years. Burton Burns has been with him since the start. Bobby Williams has been with him since the start. Billy Napier has been there 5 of 10 years. Jeremy Pruitt has been there for 7 of 10 years. Bo Davis was around for 6 of 10 years. Lance Thompson was around for 5 of 10 years. Kevin Steele was around for 4 of 10 years. Cristobal has been there 4 years. That is essentially unparalleled stability when considering the success Alabama has had and how coveted their coaches are.

Those guys are all top recruiters and THAT is why Alabama stays at the top. They have the best coaching and recruiting talent and the best work ethic. They are in battles constantly for kids who need "love" the whole way and their competition is the other top recruiters in the country. Of course they have built themselves an advantage, but they create their own advantage.

Saban will hire fill the OC position and the coach added either there or as a backfill will be one of the best recruiters in the game. Why? Because Saban believes that is #1 priority, even for a coordinator. He has said it time and time again.

BTW, despite the fact you are recruiting to college, basketball and football recruiting is patently different. Duke needs to fill 2-4 spots a year. Alabama is filling 25 every year. They need top notch recruiters across the board. It can't be handled by 1 or 2 guys like it can in basketball.
