1. Too many mistakes in this game, especially in the first half. Most of them from the defense. Offside penalties and personal foul penalties come from a lack of focus. It needs to improve fast. The preseason is over, it only gets tougher from here.
2. The OL sucks. It all starts there. This offense will go nowhere unless it gets better fast...They can’t run block or pass block.
3. Too many drives are ending with FG’s.
4. Enough of Vincent Davis. He is not an every down back. He can’t break tackles or stay on his feet. In absence of a good OL, you need a back that can run straight ahead and break tackles. Davis is not the answer. He’s more of a scat back or third down back.
5. Do we ever throw screen passes to our backs???
6. Why do we recruit tight ends? We never throw to them.
7. The play calling on the one-yard line was pitiful. Third down on the one-yard line and I am running it twice with a full back and the biggest back we have. Instead we throw it and we had Davis run the ball up the middle for no gain and get no points.
8. Once again, a dropped pass in a critical situation. Mack dropping the two- point conversion.
9. Pickett played well considering he was under duress most of the game. Too many 3rd and long’s today. That puts a lot of pressure on your QB.
10. The D-backs were awful today. They got burnt most of the game. With the pass rush weak today, they got exposed.
11. This team will go as far as the defense will take it. The offense is going to struggle most of the year.
12. Is it me, or does our receivers struggle to get open?
13. I will say that NCST’s QB (Leary) is very good. He looks like he has pro potential.
14. Finally, the refereeing was terrible today. Lots of ticky tack calls on Pitt. The NCST receivers were allowed to push off the whole game. Not the reason we lost, but it made things that much tougher.
This is a recurring theme. We continue to struggle against teams we should be beating. Today was a bitter pill to swallow.
Games like this cause me to lose interest because I know how the season will end. It’s a bad movie we’ve watched too many times.
