Just got home. I hate traveling and I knew that this was going to happen. Three long days.
This is a fantastic hire. Can't find any downside to it. She was looking for a head coach and although he was not a sitting head coach, he has the experience. Actually, I like the fact that he got fired. I have no concerns about it at all. There is something to said for a guy his age that can learn from it and grow. HIs time at Duke has been invaluable. What perspective there.
Capel is a big time recruiter. Of course it is easy to recruit to Duke but it is all relative. Duke has never recruited better and they are still taking guys from Kentucky, Kansas, Arizona, etc. He will get players here, I have no doubt. He will pull them from anywhere too.
For those worried about a departure to Duke, don't worry. If that would ever happen years down the road, it means he did a great job here and raised the profile again. Even if he does a great job, he would be behind several other candidates in my mind. Collins and Dawkins would be frontrunners in my mind. A ton of competition there. That possibility doesn't even phase me.
I think this is the perfect situation and time for both parties. Capel has been a head coach in two other locations but the ACC is his wheelhouse. He is still so young and has learned from mistakes. Of course some of these kids like Marvin Bailey may not end up here, but he has still spent a ton of time with these people and coaches building those relationships. These AAU teams have multiple studs every year. Capel is a very likable guy that has the respect of everyone he comes across.
As far as the current players, he can probably get all of them back. Stewart will be the toughest. If I am him, there are several that I don't want back. If he has Marcus, Malik, Khameron, Shamiel, Terrell, Ryan, and Jared on this roster, that is a great start and this won't be as big of a rebuild as you think. He will be able to get some grad transfers in here. Some good players have already announced they are transferring all over the country. I would also try to keep Bryce in the mix. That will leave him some space on the roster to get started.
Too early to tell what the staff may look like. Knight is the #1 target and he would be big-time under Capel. Trust me. The concern for him would be moving his family again after just two years. It always sounds good to us, but it can be difficult with kids.
I doubt Jason would want to leave the broadcasting booth to coach, but you never know. I would think Sutton is the only one that has a chance at staying. That would increase the chances of Parker staying but you can't make a hire just for that reason.
I will start working on what his staff may look like and who may be targets this weekend.
Jeff Capel is going to get talent here. He can get studs. We will see what kind of style he wants to play and how he puts it all together. I just think you will see the best recruiting that you have seen in a long time. Couldn't this have been done two years ago? I said it then and I said it before this search. This is an attractive job. This really isn't that difficult. If you have the budget and want to be competitive in basketball, you can get a Jason Capel here. This is what a real coaching search looks like. Sit back and enjoy what starts happening with this program now.
