Seton Hall is ranked #12. Hmmm.....how did they get so good under Willard? I have said many times that SHU, Providence, and Miami have as much to do with Pitt's downfall than anything. Pitt's glory years-type players are now being paid to go to those schools.

The investigation is only for tampering but who knows what else they find. Willard learned from the best (Pitino).

Lol so Willard gets investigated for tampering and use this as evidence he’s paying players. Lmao... you’re a wild dude

I mean, he probably is. But that logical leap is SMF's go-to response.

The thing is, if you get caught in one form of cheating, chances are that's not your first offense or your worst offense.

Willard was about to be fired. He needed to do something quick, so he hired that NYC HS coach who brought his cousin and a few other NYC kids with him (all Top 100 players) and that put them back on the map. Did those players also get monetary benefits? More than likely but it will never be proven. SHU doesnt go from doormat to contendor the clean way, I'm sorry.

Yeah I don’t buy that Isaiah Whitehead, #14 overall in his class, went there for free.

Let’s be serious. How do you think Ralph Willard landed an elite class to Pitt when he was here? How do you think his son is landing a top recruiting class to SH?
I think it’s extremely naive to think a Big East school is cheating with everything going on. Coaches are running scared, which isn’t an opinion straight from their mouths, all waiting to see what happens to people.

Is it possible that the big schools not cheating the last couple classes has leveled the playing field? All things being equal a relationship like a HS coach is gonna win out because of the trust factor.

I really don’t know either way but it’s extremely lazy and childish to just say they’re cheating and that’s why they’re doing it. If everyone is cheating, is it really cheating? And if no one is cheating and they are, they should be better than they are.

VT thinks we cheated for Audiese Toney and McGowens, so how do we know we aren’t? I doubt anyone here really wants the NCAA sniffing into Capel.

Not a friend of the guy and don’t know him well but Willard works his tail off like very few coaches do and is as nice as a guy as any coach I have met. Got a chance to know him a little many years back when he recruited a player I coached. The recruitment of this kid from Brooklyn by Willard and then assistants Shaheen Holloway and Dan McHale was second to none. They went by the book except for a little individual instruction by Willard (was not allowed at least at that time). I don't recall seeing a head coach work like he did during practices as I got to see several of their practices. I have never seen a head coach as hands on as Willard especially during individual instruction (assistants usually handle this most times). Willard was literally diving on the floor during a few drills and taking charges. He was trying to demonstrate to players the intensity he wants to see.

Willard was refreshingly honest and out worked every other coach in the kids recruitment. The kid did not go to Seton Hall because his family wanted him to get away from the NYC area. One thing for sure is SHU is a tough place to recruit. The campus sucks and their practice facility is horrible.

No. Every school cheats but Pitt. - Chris Dokish, 2019

Another note about that staff at that time, shaheen Holloway is one of the most personable coaches I’ve ever met. No wonder they landed Myles Powell. Easy when you have an NBA caliber PG coaching you who is as cool as him.

Yes he is a great guy with a personality bigger than the Empire State Building. When he found out I was from Pittsburgh he said let me introduce you to Herb Pope (he whispered to me that he loves Pope but the kid is missing a screw or 2 haha).

How is Pitt supposed to compete with these big, megadonor $$ institutions like Seton Hall?
Nail on the effing head, I mean cmon guys, we hired the guy who landed Zion Williamson at Duke (and now Kansas is going on probation for ATTEMPTING to pay him, and duke gets nothing) and Marvin BAGley. Stop with this stuff, every week it gets old.

Seton Hall with Holloway had the recruiting advantage we had in the early years of Jamie. A young energetic recruiter who is DESPERATE to get their first head job. When we had guys like Lombardi, Slice, Herrion (although his second head job) Mike Rice and to a lesser extent Skerry we had guys willing to do whatever they had to do to get noticed to get a head job. You should always have one of these desperate as hell types on your staff

That's what I was saying about the last few years and the staff under Jamie. No one was knocking down their doors to be a head guy. I thought his staff at the end was horrible, both in recruiting and X's and O's.

Billy Barton looked as though he was half asleep. Stallings and him would be good nap partners on the recruiting trail. They could take turns finding hiding spots like George Constanza.

You do know what the say about these young assistant coaches who are desperate to make a name for themselves to advance in the profession?
