Need to Hire a Good, Young Head Coach

That is the “special sauce” that we’re missing! ;)

We need to find our next Ben Howland; a rising mid-major head coach who can bring a few young proteges with him. Even if he’s only here for a few years, you can promote from within and build a culture of winning through stability.

Tell me more about Calhoun.

We’ll pay top 20 money. So should be attractive to a sitting HC and not have to go after an assistant

He’s currently Utah State’s head coach, after about a decade of pretty successful head coaching at Youngstown State and D2 Fairmont State. He’s originally from eastern Ohio, played for Rollie Massimino at Cleveland State before coming up through the ranks for Huggins at Cincinnati and WVU before getting the head job at Fairmont.

Not to mention he was born in East Liverpool, which is basically Pittsburgh… :)

The guy has won everywhere he’s been. He’s a good, young coach who can recruit. I’d call him a young version of Mick Cronin.

Calhoun is a no-brainer unless we can somehow get some bigger name. Really shouldn't even conduct a search. I didn't even know he coached at Fairmont St and lead them to the D2 NC game. Frigging Fairmont State. Then he turns a dead YSU program around. Then takes over a Utah State team, which is a good program and they are 24-4.

Impressive resume so far. Why would he risk a setback at this point in his career to come to Pitt, given the current circumstances.
Because Pitt will give him the resources he needs to be successful (NIL, facilities, staff), and it’s been shown that a good coach can turn this into a top ten program nationally. IMO, I don’t think our lack of success comes from a lack of investment.

Eff that hoopie

We need a good coach , regardless of age .
Can one of you who knows about Calhoun put some things on him in the board. Ive never heard of him, and not seen him. He sounds like what Pitt needs. More in the mode of people like Howland and Dixon. Just someone who can teach the game of basketball and coach. Would like to know what and if he has a system that he coached.

This won't be very helpful but I know nothing about his coaching style. But I'm super impressed he's won big at 3 levels. OK, maybe he didn't win "big" at YSU but that's an impossible job and he turned them around. I also love the fact he is a Huggins disciple and that he's local. I dont think its that important to be local but I do think it helps you understand the landscape.

His teams play fairly uptempo. In what little I've seen Utah St this season, they play both zone & man.

I missed their game last night, but it seems Boise St put a beatdown on the Aggies.

His teams don't actually play very fast. This year Pomeroy has them 138 in tempo. His first year at Youngstown State they were 50, but since then his team has never finished higher than 94.

One thing that is consistent is that every year he's been a head coach their offensive rating has been better than their defensive rating. In his first five years at Youngstown his team's best finish defensively was 303. That is, ah, not good. Not good at all. This year they are 15 in offense and 122 in defense.

If we can find a hotshot young coach who might make it financially feasible to negotiate a “retirement” or move to Admin for HCJC, that would be ideal. Otherwise, we need a band aid who can at least get us to .500 or better in ACC, such as Sean Miller or someone like him with a decent track record of coaching at the P4 level.

Oh I’m sure we’ll pay some search firm 6 figures for it
