Congressional proposal would overhaul college sports, require revenue sharing, cover athletes' medical costs (espn.com)

Will be interesting. A lot of changes packed in here. The largest is a 50/50 revenue split for all 130 FBS schools.

The proposal will be all revenue is polled for all 130 schools, subtract out scholarship expense and the remainder is split 50/50 between schools and athletes for any sport that makes money above scholarship costs (only FB, MBB, WBB, and baseball fall into this per analysis).

I don't know how that one will work because smaller schools that make FAR less money will have to pay out a heavier burden in comparison.

Lol. Can't wait for the response from politicians in Texas. This is private how we can get them to vote for Medicare 4 All. Just promise you will not support college football revenue sharing.

Maybe it's about time for the NFL to support a real minor league system. Many of these (a-hem) student athletes would probably want to get a real pay check without school. The NFL has been getting a free ride for far too long.

I said that a few weeks ago on here.

It's time we stop pretending that guys like Zion Williamson are Student-Athletes and just let them go right to the NBA's full-funded developmental league, rather than Duke for one semester where he can pretend to go to school. Then we also get the shoe companies out of paying the kids because Coach says he wants the kid on his team for a year.

Let the NFL fully handle it's developmental program. Then we don' have to worry about what Texas or Ohio State or Alabama are doing with their $100,000,000+ in revenue brought in by the football program.

And for the record, I do not hold it against Zion, or anyone else, for getting his. Hell, Coach K is paid about $9,000,000 per year, or more, and he doesn't have to worry about getting injured and losing his career with one slip.

It's all a fraud.

We’re both part of the same hypocrisy Senator.

Curious about the medical cost one. Isnt this already happening. Cant imagine college athletes are paying their own medical bills now or going under their parents coverage..

Imagine it.

Read Me

"All college athletes are required by the NCAA to have healthcare insurance. The NCAA does not mandate colleges to pay the healthcare costs for athletes. Should a player be injured, the parent’s insurance is considered the primary insurance for paying for the athlete’s injury costs. "

That is an exceedingly stupid idea. There are a lot better, easier ways to pay players if that's what you want to do.

LOL. OSU sharing revenue with Bowling Green. Texas sharing with UTEP. They'll just leave the NCAA

These athletes get a $150,000-200,000 education for free. They are well compensated.

I have no issue with giving cost of attendance and even some of the NIL proposals make sense without entirely ruining the amateurism aspect, but this is ludicrous.

As SMF said, the big boys will form their own thing.

Its stuff like this that has brought more talk about breaking away over the last 12-24 months.

I personally think it is inevitable.

It isn't revenue sharing between the schools. It's revenue sharing with the players. And it will really screw the Bowling Greens and the UTEPs of the world. Because Ohio State and Texas are actually making money playing football. They would just make a little (or maybe a lot) less. But Bowling Green and UTEP are NOT making money playing football, but they are going to be kicking in millions of dollars (that they don't have) all the same.

They aren't basing this on a school's profit playing football. They are simply basing it on revenue minus scholarship cost. Every school would make money if that were the only expenses they had. But of course that isn't even close to the only expense a school has. That's why it's a stupid idea. The big schools won't like it, but they will be able to afford this. The small schools, most of the non-P5 schools, will have their budgets absolutely wrecked by this. It will absolutely force most of those schools to either drop down a level or quit football entirely.

The whole system is crazy. Why do these kids need to be amateurs? Tradition? In every other country and even in this country in other sports, similarly talented 18-22 year olds make millions but Trevor Lawrence has to play for free for 3 years?

This. I dont know how the small schools will be able to handle this.

The 3 year rule is an NFL rule. Trevor Lawrence can try to find some league in some other place. He doesn't have to go to college.

Playing soccer at 18 against 25 year olds is not the same as playing football at 18 against 25 year olds. An 18 year old Trevor Lawrence getting chased around by NFL men is asking for a quick exit from football.

Maybe but some NFL team would have paid him tens of millions at 19.

Interesting, I really didn’t know that. So yes, I think the programs should pay for any medical expenses due to sports injuries.

The NFL won't want a kid that would be in that situation and wouldn't risk it. If he was ready after last season, he should have been allowed to come out. The NFL rule is there to keep the schools who provide the free minor league system happy.

There are a couple of things in here that would be good for the players but most of it is trash.

I agree. There are some things, like the medical coverage, that are long overdue. But if they pass this bill in it's current form it will be a disaster.

Most people care about their college but they wouldn’t care about a minor league team. That carries over to increased interest in the NFL.
