what PITT's record would be if they still had Boyd....Likely 4-0. The secondary had been horrible, but the offense had a chance to put the game away the last two games and failed to convert critical third downs.

There are four positions in football that are very tough to break in as a true freshman: QB, OL, LB, DB. That's because there are schemes and other idiosyncrasies that must be learned and developed.

Guys like Hamlin would have probably been able to handle it because of their superior athletic ability. There is no guarantee that any of the freshman could have made a difference in any of the games. Jackie Sherrill once said you can count on a loss for every freshman you start.

I think they are starting guys that don't have the athletic ability of the true freshman, but have the experience not to make mistakes. Unfortunately, they just don't have the ability to cover top end WR's. It's a tough call.

I would not burn any of the red shirts. As I've been saying, with the exception of Miami and Clemson we have enough talent to beat anyone on our schedule. Now if Marshall comes out and next week and the DB's get smoked again, my opinion may change.
