Am I a jagoff for hating all the Madden stuff today? Most overrated coach and announcer of my lifetime.

Second highest winning percentage as an NFL coach of all time, behind only some guy who coached in the 1920s. And just ahead of some guy named Lombardi.
Yeah not sure how anyone could dislike Madden, especially in contrast to most of the stiffs doing color for the NFL games today. Brady being the worst at the moment.
Yeah the current announcers suck but Madden was all shtick and was worse than Dickie V when it came slobbering over certain players and coaches.
Madden is maybe top 5 most important contributors to the NFL ever....

madden and summerall were nails down a chalkboard to me. never understood the lovefest for them at all.
The guy coached for 10 years, won a Super Bowl and still has the highest winning percentage of any coach with 100 or more wins in NFL history. Care to expound on your 'overrated' rationale further?

They were absolutely horrible to listen to and the Fox picture quality and graphics at the time were beyond horrendous. I used to despise when the Steelers played in a Summerall-Madden game on Fox because it was a minor league caliber broadcast and a huge step down from when CBS would do the games. Madden was a great coach but an absolutely terrible announcer. He sounded like a drunken idiot and Summerrall was equally bad. Summerrall was monotone and just generally boring to listen to and then Madden would jump in and sound like he just drank three bottles of Jameson and shoved two cheeseburgers in his mouth before he said something cliched and then would yell BAM! I was a tween/teen in the mid nineties and I was baffled how adults found them insightful and entertaining then as I got older I realized most adults are actually morons so it all reconciled.
I wasn't a big Madden fan. But in my book, he is no where close to being as bad as Dickie V.
I wasn't alive for when Madden coached but I imagine he was very unpopular in Western Pa given the Steelers-Raiders rivalry, and that affects a lot of folks' views of him as an announcer.

Dickie V might annoy but most recognize it's all schtick and yet probably deep down his enthusiasm has a basis

i didnt mind Dickie V doing the pre game shows or being on espn or whatever, covering or talking about college Hoops but him for a whole game was way too much..
im too young to remember Madden as a coach so my dislike for him has nothing to do with that. @S.R.M. perfectly nails it above. Fox and even dating back to CBS (KDKA) with their horrible graphics and terrible production just put a bad taste in my mouth as a young kid. Loved NBC so much better, from afc stuff to even the college football bowl coverage in the late 80's and into the 90s. The orange bowl was always great
Announcers were so much better, Don Crique (sp?), Marv Albert (yeah the dude is a weirdo but he was good doing games), Trumpy, Al Maguire, even bob costas back then was good, Dick Enberg.
COmpared it to cbs and then fox, just light years ahead of them. really made me dislike NFC football growing up and carried over to the SEC with lundquist, another 'nails down a chalkboard" voice.
Good post. I didn't like Fox and still don't like Fox for the same reasons. CBS and NBC were far better with the graphics and announcers, though, I grew to like Madden more as I got older and grew up playing his video game. I didn't get the love for Summerall. I always though he was bland.
I've always said with Dukie V, early in his announcing career he was really good. That was back when he was 90% analyzing the game and 10% overblown shtick. And then as time went on, the amount of actual game analysis kept getting smaller as the amount of shtick kept getting larger. And as that happened, he became worse and worse as an actual game commentator. Until he became essentially unlistenable to people who cared more about the game than the hype.
Madden and Summerall were fantastic. Madden's Steeler hatred was nauseating but he actually had great insights for lots of folks who didn't play the game or had only the most basic understanding. He was one of the great growers of the NFL brand throughout his coaching/media career.

I do agree with you that Madden was hard to listen to at times. I don't agree about "most overrated coach". I think he was a very good coach.
But, despite the insight he brought to the broadcast, his over-the-top caracture of himself that he created, was cartoonish and juvenile. A lot like Dickie V, who others have brought up in his discussion.
