They didn't tell us not to post about the event this year, but out of respect, I wont post anything specific about what the coaches said about the recruits or program in general. I'll instead focus on the personalities of the assistant coaches and kind of predict how well they will be at recruiting.

- First of all, I've been to a lot of these (but not all) and this seemed to be the largest crowd. Easily 1000, maybe as many as 2000. Many of the coaches remarked about the large turnout. Some that came from smaller schools were really stunned at the difference.

- The mood was really positive. Chancellor Gallagher received a standing ovation when he was introduced. As did Pat Narduzzi.

- I was impressed with Narduzzi's little talk. As I've said before, he seems to be a combination of Todd Graham and Paul Chryst in terms of personality. He's got a little of that Todd Graham salesmanship and some of that down to Earth coach's son midwestern thing going on. I like him.

- I was most impressed with LB Coach Rob Harley. The first thing I thought is this is our new Jeff Hafley. Hafley blew me away when I first heard him speak. It was easy to tell back then that that kid had IT. Harley is the same way. The coach that introduced him said he's half supermodel/half football coach. He seems to have the look, speaking ability, and confidence to do very very well in a living room. What I didn't realize about him until I googled him was that he was a color commentator for ESPN (ESPN3 maybe?) and a sideline reporter for the Big Ten Network. Clearly, the guy is as bright and articulate as they come. Though as a former OSU Buckeye, I worry about Urban swooping in soon.

- John Peterson was very energetic and you could tell that was a guy who absolutely loved Pitt and loved recruiting. From listening to him and seeing his posts on Twitter, I'm a little surprised a guy like that loves Pitt as much as he seems to since he hasn't been hear long. Its rare to have an OL coach be such a willing recruiter but I have a feeling he's going to do well.

- Jim Chaney seemed very funny with a good personality. He's got that big good ole boy, southern thing going on. He was also very articulate and someone who I think would be an effective recruiter.

- Tom Sims was very energetic and seemed very personable.

I think all the coaches did a good job and it seems like Narduzzi has put together a good staff. I was super impressed with Todd Graham and his staff during the LOI event and I'd say this staff measures up to that one. As for Chryst's LOI event, it was a complete borefest. He and most of his coaches had no personality whatsoever and I remember coming away wondering if those guys were going to be able to recruit.

The personalities and social skills of the assistants impressed me. Some of the coaches visited each table in the bar area and introduced themselves and talked shop. They seemed to connect with the fans immediately. One, Jim Chaney, talked to us for about 20 minutes and was very entertaining. We had quite a few laughs. His humility and down-to-earth attitude was refreshing. The other coaches were impressive too. It was the best time our group had at one of these. I got the sense from the turnout that the excitement for this program has escalated, and we'll see it coming forward.

Good synopsis.

My only disagreement - I see none of Paul Chryst in Pat Narduzzi.
PC was so quiet and reserved - seemed like a midwestern framer
Pat Narduzzi seems like a guy out of Youngstown - a mill town - louder way more energy. Way more aggressive.

I thought Pat was a little overshadowed by his crew in speaking ability.
On the surface they sounded like the best group in many many years

Graham's staff vs Duzzi's

I loved the Graham hiring, he is a jackass, but a for real P5 college coach.

The big difference in the two staff's is that it was mostly his crew he had developed along the course of his career.

When his hiring was announced, he had almost off his guys there with him that day.

It actually is pretty impressive that Duzzi was able to put this staff together in such a short period of time given that this is his first HC gig, he honored D'Antonios request to not bring any current MSU coaches and he had very little direct connections with most of the guys he hired AND ... this is the really amazing thing, this is a REALLY, REALLY well accomplished staff, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.

Peterson was the coaching coordinator at OHIO STATE. A really good OL coach, but think about THAT a bit.

Chaney has been around the block and then some. But, left an SEC school to come and coach under HCPN.

Salem has all kinds of experience. Powell made a lateral move from a P5 program.

There was an article posted here that really highlights the difference between HCPN and HCPC.

PC was an offensive guy and by far the talent on his staff was heavily slanted to the offensive side of the ball. He left the defensive side of the ball to a ridiculously under qualified staff.

PN did the exact opposite. He put a lot of talent and experience on the offensive side, where he didn't have his expertise. Then went out and got one of the best young, up and coming DCs and other younger talent to develop and mentor on the defensive side of the ball.

Did anyone ask any of these guys substantive questions about their plans for the offense, etc.?

Yes, we asked a few and he joked that all he needs to do was get the ball to Conner and Boyd, and he'd be a good coach. Seriously, Chaney does what he thinks will work with the players he has, simple as that.

Jim Chaney spoke briefly about the 2 QBs in the class. He started off by saying that you hear a lot of talk about what qualities people look for in a QB, but to him, the most important thing about a QB is that he can throw accurate passes...

I liked that.

Go Pitt.

A GREAT PHOTO OF LOI DAY ON FACEBOOK. WISH I COULD UPLOAD IT TO HERE. SRO!

Re: I agree with you on Graham's abilities as a top notch coach...

That's why I never understood why Pederson took so much heat for that hire. No one expected him or his wife to melt down after 1 year. It was a good hire.

It was a good hire but Pederson failed miserably at making Graham happy enough to stay. I dont blame him for the hire, I blame him for creating an environment that allowed Graham to consider a lateral move.

Gallagher is all of 6'3....6'4"

That surprised me

I Like Conklin. The defensive guys are going to respond to him.
