Not cancer, not a blown knee, the only thing that can stop James Conner...

is Matt Canada.

3 YPC against a D1-AA squad behind what should be the best O lime we've had in forever.. He had 77 TDs and 2 TDs on 8 carries in last year's opener against YSU.

Offense looked totally lackluster, and the "vanilla playbook" excuse is horse$hit. If you couldnt see the lack of execution and physicality out of our O line you don't know what you're looking at.

I'm quite certain the 3 playbooks in 3 years has a little something to do with that. Nova stacked the box to stop, the run and essentially did so. Not sure why Canada didn't try to attack the edges with outside running plays to soften them up. Just about any team can stop any other team's inside run game if they know that's what's coming. The downfield passing game once again looked awful. Peterman is very pedestrian, he is what he's always been.

The defense played well but this opponent did not test it much.

First game so you can't read too much into it, but we have a lot of work to do-this week.

I'll reserve judgement until after the next fee weeks.

Still, it was amusing watching this board talk about what a great hire he was.
This wasn't an up and comer from a smaller school, or long time OF that didn't make it as a head coach. He got dismissed ftom NC State. Not exactly a shining star on the resume.

Hey guys,

I'm looking for an OC who will decide to run a read-option out of the shotgun where the OL have to hold their blocks extra long is a great idea. It may give the weakside edge rusher more time to get in the backfield, but the payoff is a QB who isn't dangerous keeping the ball on the option or rolling out to throw at terrible WRs.

Am I in the right place?

Pretty sure there was only one poster trumpeting the Canada hire. There were a whole lot more of us wondering why we didn't do better than a guy who wasn't good enough for a cheesedick excuse for a football program like NCSU.

Anyway, it was just the first game,, a lot of teams look bad, and we have some players on O. We will see what happens.

Do you know what he got dismissed from NC state? It wasn't because he wasn't doing a good a job there. They had just signed him to a lucrative extension the year before.

It's only week 1. You think he wants to show everything vs Villanova?

Steel =/= "the board" just because he posts 7 topics at a time

I'm just going to say this and deal with fallout: If Hall or Ollison started the game, we would have won by two more TDs. Number 24 is going to be just fine and looked better 10 carries in but when Ollison ran, it was more decisive with speed. Ollison was 4.3 to James 3.1 yards per carry. Hall was 2.2 ypc but he sure looked the part when he went straight.

James will be fine and be back to form. I honestly was very impressed with Villanova D as they were very disciplined, played the odds of heavy run and were very successful. I really enjoyed watching Nova and believe they will be great this year.

Script was predictable. No Whitehead in backfield, few long balls , Villanova is better than many FBS teams.

Everyone in the Country knew the ball was going to James Conner so easy to defense and he was so jacked up, I think he was totally gassed from the first play. It's now over and things become normal.

What is the upside to showing our hand against NOVA? Pitt won 28-7, if not for a bad snap it would have been either 28-0 or 35-0. If Blewitt makes the first kick, 31-0, beats the vegas line, complete blowout. Winning by 1000 points did what for us in the past? Yup. Not a thing.

Narduzzi's unconcerned demeanor in his post-game presser tells me your assessment is spot-on.

We all will see this coming Sat! Hope we all see a different called game , with the best players in to execute the plan on that day

Hope you're right.
The OL looked like they flat out can't block in this scheme, and a former player says on Facebook they didn't go full-contact much in camp which surprised me.

I understand a long-developing play out of a read-option when the payoff is a QB who's a good runner that can throw it over the top after the fake. Holding the blocks longer is a risk worth taking there. I don't think it is when the QB is Nate Peterman.

re: Conner
Yesterday he reminded me of Shady in the one opener against Bowling Green. Shady was a better RB than Stephens-Howling, but he sure wasn't that day, yet Wannstedt kept force-feeding him the ball no matter how much he tried to run sideways and backwards.
Hopefully Conner got trying to turn every carry into a TD out of his system.

Expect to see Jordan Whitehead coming around on end-around options w/ dives to Conner/Ollison being the 2nd option this week.

It wasn't the play calling as much as it was the apparent regression of our O line. The execution was really bad and that's out of the best and most experienced line we've had in many years. If you can't move D1-AA players off the ball, good luck with the big boys.

That said, it was week 1 with yet another new OC and playbook, lots of teams start slow. Let's see where we're at after Week 3.
