Looks like the Pirates are going to resign Ivan Nova to an incredibly friendly deal. That is a good thing.

Now here is the time the Pirates can show how serious they are. Send Glasnow and Meadows to Chicago for Carlos Quintana. Boom. Do it. Quintana is under control for 4 more years I believe. He is a really good lefty that could thrive in this ballpark.

A 2017 rotation of Cole, Taillon, Nova and Quintana plus whoever as a 5th starter now looks pretty damn good. It ain't the 1991 Braves, but it is a pretty solid rotation with guys on an upside.

Keep Cutch, for now.

Now you have shown the fans and baseball you are serious. Is this as good as the Cubs lineup? No, but it is good enough to contend again for the postseason, and with injuries and luck, who knows what happens with the Cubs and Cards.

If the three things happen above, I don't even think Del can complain.

Agreed - get it done. They are quietly making some good moves. If they finalize this trade, then they deserve kudos.

Nutsack feeling the heat...too bad they didn't sign Happ last year. The Bucs could now have something resembling a starting pitching staff. Banking on Taillon and Glasnow to be consistent starters this year could still prove to be a huge mistake. The everyday lineup still has very little power.

It would be tough to deal Meadows because he is supposed to be Cutch's eventual replacement but in this case that would be a very sensible deal. A front of the rotation lefty with a friendly contract. yes, do it. Of course I have no idea what the White Sox are asking but i would do the deal you suggested.

Oh my... you very much underestimate Del.

See post #3 in this thread, for instance.

bounce back years from Cutch and Cole and they make September baseball meaningful again

Their not trading meadows, that would be horrible,he is the future in the Of their not trading him

This is s good article about a potential Jose Quintana trade. I would offer what Tampa wanted for Archer. I'd part with Bell before Meadows...

Unload Marte... and keep both young guys. The guy's always hurt and doesn 't seem to be improving as a hitter.
Unload Marte? Are you sipping from the punch bowl that is spiked? He is currently the best player on the team, and has all the tools to be an elite player.

The guy is a gold glover ... Yet he's always hurt and is very unproductive at he plate. If Marte is going to become an elite player he will be doing so at a snail's pace. Bell can become a corner OF and Meadows can play CF.

That's not really born out by the numbers. His average, OBP, SLG, and OPS all went up from 2015 to 2016.

Marte has played 135, 135, 153, and 129 games in his career since he's been up.

You are wrong again which surprises no one.

Thanks for making my point. You think those are good numbers? He should play in no less than 150 games at his age. 129 games-that's shameful! He misses games every time he has has a hangnail issue.

I just gave you the facts... 9 hrs, 45 rbis and 129 games played... The blue light special in aisle 5 is calling you... He's a superstar...also, why are you now posting under a different account?

Pirates want Quintana and still want to unload Cutch. Got to get a 3-way going, and I think this one makes a ton of sense:

Pirates: get Quintana
Mets: get Cutch
White Sox: get Glasnow, a top prospect from the Mets, a mid level prospect from the Bucs and another lesser prospect from the Mets.

Keep Meadows at all costs. I'd rather give up Cutch than Meadows now, especially since Cutch is probably getting traded within a year anyways.

Rotation of Cole, Quintana, Taillon, Nova, Kuhl would be awesome, especially since you've still got another mid-rotation arm with Kingham at AAA (Williams and Brault, too).

Yes, you trade Meadows now for Quintana. With all the talent the Pirates would have you play to win this year. Yes, you keep Andrew McCutchen. No, you do not trade Marte. If you don't win this year you can trade one or two of many of these players and get a guy like Meadows or even two back

You would unload Marte for a career .500 pitcher??? Why don't we throw in Cole and Polanco too????

Marte is an illogical trade piece but its also incorrect to refer to Quintana as just a .500 pitcher. He has been on terrible teams with terrible defenses. His ERA has always been in low 3s, he has a great SO/walk rate, and he is a lefty. He could become dominant here wit our park and defense.

I wasn't commenting about this particular trade proposal but simply suggesting that if I were going to consider a trade I'd consider keeping Bell rather than Marte because having seen Marte for 4 seasons, his fielding aside, I don 't think his upside is all that high. I believe that if Marte was destined for superstardom, we'd have more evidence by now. Compare his trajectory to that of Rizzo and Bryant...

There aren't a lot of guys like Meadows out there. The Nats have one in Robles and they won't part with him for anything. Yes, you want to win now but you always want to make sure you win 2 and 3 years from now when the core is still under contract.

Hi Myron this is "recruits from Nay trona Heights" home of the mouth breathing yinzers ,who got run out of Tarentum. "As we were discussing baseball last night at a our Pagan motor gang meeting the thought occurred to me...." Killler Teton killer

"He could"

Your record says what you are.... a .500 pitcher.

However I will concede he has potential to become a much better pitcher... but, I wouldn't go overboard trying to acquire him...

IMHO the two guys in the farm they can't move at all are Meadows and Kevin Newman. As far as the big team goes I'd trade any of them if the right deal came along. I'm not saying dump Cutch and or Marte BUT if an opportunity comes their way they have to look into it. They will need quality pitching ASAP, especially after Cole moves on. I don't think Glasnow is the answer.

This team is in the same division with the Cubs and Cards. They are going to have to make a splash move to be competitive or else it's bust your balls all season hoping to make a one card wild card game. Bringing in a journeyman hoping to strike lighting in a bottle can only work so many times.

I would respectfully disagree...I think records have next to nothing to do with how good a pitcher is. The man was 13-12 last year and still finished 10th in CY voting.

Compare Happ and Quintana, two of the game's best lefties, last year. Quintana had a better SO and BB rate, a better FIP, same HR rate, and an ERA that was almost identical to Happ's. Quintana was almost a full WAR more valuable. Quintana was 13-12 and Happ was 20-4.

Quintana is probably a 20+ game winner in Toronto with their offense last year. I'd peg him as a 17 or 18 game winner here with our offense as it stands today. He is also only 27 and has been consistent and healthy his whole career.

Surprised they signed him and at that price.

Yeah, maybe Nova was getting worried there was just no buzz about him yet this offseason. Everyone has been looking to upgrade pitching via trade that guys like Nova (and to a lesser extent Hammel) have been largely forgotten. Pirates got lucky this time around....who knows what kind of ridiculous contract Nova gets over the past few offseasons.

Odd fact....Charlie Morton got almost as much per year with the Astos as Nova did with the Pirates.

What is so special about Meadows and Newman?

The time is now,

Newman probably replaces Mercer very soon and Meadows replaces Cutch when (not if) they trade him. Newman projects to be a very good ss and Meadows projects as an all-star caliber OF. And these guys are very close which makes their projections that much more meaningful. We don't have depth beyond those two guys until you get down to a guy like Cole Tucker...a long ways away. OF is even more shallow.

But you have a whole roster of controllable players who could be traded for a SS or CF.

You do what you have to do now to get a number one or two pitcher and worry about replacing people when you actually need to replace people.
