It isn't "playing not to lose". Its playing to win with a little different approach. Pin them deep, play defense and get the ball back in good field position. Yeah, I would have rather he went for it in that particular situation, but I understand his thought process.
USC would likely have won another National Championship had Pete Carroll played "not to lose". (I really hate that expression)
