Any truth to that widely held belief that nova is for catholic school kids who got rejected by Notre dame ? Or that an inordinate number of nova fans are nitters who don’t follow ups hoops ?

Maybe for some, but it’s basketball program is certainly a cut above under Jay Wright.
Boston College might fit that description as a school as well. In reality these are all great schools.
Nova is the top dawg basketball school in Philly, there is no question about that right now. Say Duquesne had the kind of hoops success they have, frequently being a national title contender ... there would be lots of Pittsburghers that are Pitt football fans but Duquesne basketball fans.
Notre Dame is the Villanova of the mid west, Not every Catholic is enamored with ND.
Yeah the ones who don’t get into ND and have to go to their Plan Bs certainly aren’t.
Probably not as hard to get admitted to as Notre Dame. Nevertheless, it is good academically. Its Navy ROTC Program is noteworthy for having produced more Admirals than any school other than the U.S. Naval Academy.
Villanova is a great school but not quite the caliber Notre Dame accepts. They aren’t recruiting Catholic kids only. He’s locked down Delaware valley basketball recruiting, a couple of players from Jersey, NY, MD and one from Louisiana. They have benefited from temple being terrible since Cheney retired. Jay Wright has elevated the school’s exposure in a similar way that K did for Duke, though I think Duke is still obviously a better all around school.
