1. Great road trip. Easy drive. Probably 75% PITT fans on the PITT side of the field.
The die hards stuck through the rain. Plenty of Lets Go PITT chants throughout the game. Great PITT crowd overall.

2. Strength coach Dave Andrews was on the field a lot right next to Narduzzi. Saw the two of them talking to the officials. Maybe this guy is more than a strength coach. You can tell he was a former player at O$U. I never remember seeing former strength coaches on the field talking to the HC or officials.

3. Coach Powell. He was right in Boyd's face on the sideline after one of Boyd's punt returns. Boyd caught the ball and side stepped a few people and never got up field at all. You could tell Powell wanted him going more North/South. Narduzzi had to come over and clap his hands between them as Powell and Boyd were both amped up. Intense coaching I guess.

4. Receivers. Need to step outside of Boyd. Didn't see much separation all game long. Say what you want about the QBs, but it's not like guys are running wide open.

5. Great defensive improvement. Defensive line played great. Jarrett and Blair were names that stood out. I am amazed in the improvement in our secondary. There were times I saw the ball in the air and thought it would be a big play, but the DBs recovered and PLAYED THE BALL. I think we only had one PI all game.

6. Running Backs. Need to get better at catching the ball out of the backfield. Noticed a few dropped screen passes during the game. Overall I think Akron picked up on the dump off passes and adjusted, but for some reason Chaney kept calling them.

7. The QBs. Where to begin. They both need to work on their mesh point with the running back. Both quarterbacks had issues with that on Saturday. Those read plays just look awkward.
I would personally stick with Voytik. He was 6 of 8 and didn't play bad. Once the line gets healthy I think the sacks will go away.

Petermen really benefited from the up tempo offense right before half. He admitted this in his postgame interview. I noticed earlier in the half both QBs had to look over to the sideline and get the signals multiple times before each play. That really affected the rhythm of the offense and slowed us down. You could tell during the no huddle that all the skill players looked to the sideline. Then the QB just relayed the protection to the lineman. Much better flow.

Voytik probably has more natural ability than Petermen. Especially as a runner. Petermen looked like TINO on that fourth down play. Deer in headlights and he froze. Against a better team a play like that will lose a game.

However, Petermen is probably more familiar with Chaney's offense. Without the no huddle Voytik has to get the play from the sideline, check the wristband, communicate the play and then make calls at the line. I would have loved to see Voytik in the hurry up before half. Get rid of all the pre snap verbage and just let him play. Petermen is more comfortable running the offense, but that doesn't mean he is a better QB. Just more familiar with the plays/verbage.

I'll go ahead and say it right now. I think this "competition" is rigged. Clearly Petermen is Chaney's guy. Chad isn't getting a chance. When Chad played he made some nice throws to Boyd with very tight coverage.

I remember against YSU that Chad played the first 2 series. Just handed the ball off and short dump off passes. Never had a chance to get in rhythm. Chris has even mentioned this on his radio show. I thought Chad was starting to get in rhythm against Akron then BOOM, in comes Petermen. I'll never understand it.

I also think Chad is a better option in the run game. With Conner out we may have to start going to some option game. You saw some against Akron. Clean up the running back/QB exchange mentioned above and we might have something with Chad. Petermen doesn't bring much as a runner. He looked like Tino on that fourth down while Chad was able to run for a 1st down on one play.

Chad should be the guy. He lead this team all last year. Great games on the road against UNC and Miami to finish the year. All the players spoke highly of him during camp. Really unfortunate the Chaney/Petermen politics may be playing a role. We can't keep playing yo-yo with the position moving forward.

On #'s 4 & 7---Isn't there a linkage here? With pass protection not so great (sacks and hurries) isn't it more difficult for receivers to get separation especially for the shorter routes?

Maybe it isn't as much on the receivers not getting separation as it is on the time the QB's are getting in the pocket before they have to make a throw?

I dont think it is rigged.

I like Chad, and I think he is a good QB, but there is no way you can watch the first 2 games and leave with the impression he should be starting ahead of Peterman.

I dont think it is clear either way, and I think if we need Voytiks legs then he should be the QB and if we need a pocket passer then its Peterman. I would be happy with either.

I don't think Voytik has had a chance to throw the ball down field. Thats probably due to a combination of bad pass protection, a lack of receiving options, the coaching staff not opening up the playbook, and crappy weather.

could his lack of arm strength / accuracy also be a reason or is that out of the realm of possibility. Chad has some strengths but let's face it, the deep ball isn't one of them..

Could be. His arm isn't great.

His current stastistics go beyond having a questionable arm. If you strip out the orndorf td, he has 14 completions for 49 yards. 49! Thats three and a half yards per completion, which is unheard of at this level.

Chad leads the team all last year.

This year he gets 8 throws in the game with his top WR. Then the OC puts in the guy he coached before.

Seems like an abrupt decision to me.

Chad shouldn't be given the job just because he started last year. Although he did play very well down the stretch.
But you also can't yank him after he gets 8 throws in a game with Boyd.

Petermans TD pass to Holltz was a nice throw and it seemed to me he could see the field better.Ha can you imagine Pitt has 2 qbs that can play when was the last time that happened?

--Are we watching the same Pitt games? Chad looks lost. I guess he completed 6 of 6, but we got nothing from it because all the passes are short and across the field; when Chad is in, nothing goes down the field. I don't know if this is Chad or Chaney, but as soon as NP comes in, we have completions down the field.

--And NP runs better than Tino, IMHO. NP's 17-yard run was pretty nifty. I really can't remember Tino ever making a 17-yard run...

--Chad is even off on the read-option fake/handoff. Had trouble with a couple of those that led to loss of yardage on running plays.

--I noticed that Chad was wearing gloves, I wonder if he has trouble throwing in wet conditions. Peterman had gloves on too, I thought.

--Great to see JP Holtz get used effectively -- now where is Orndoff...

--I hope Chad rights the ship and gets back to playing like he was late last season, but for now, Peterman is outplaying him.

Go Pitt.

I tend to think it's playcalling. Are they letting Chad throw down the field?
Did you watch Chad the second half of last year? Why has he regressed? It's Chaney.
NP may run better than Tino, but my point was he was Tino-esque on that one 4th down play.

I thought both QBs were off on the read option. I also mentioned the backs couldn't catch some dump passes. Maybe the wet conditions affected everyone in the backfield.

I'll disagree that NP is outplaying Chad. Haven't been impressed with either and I put that on Chaney.

Chaney no doubt. I think better play calling Saturday gets us about 5-6 more first downs, and maybe another TD or 2. Too conservative on 2nd downs and shying away from power football on 3rd and shorts.
I think the guy will be a good coordinator, but so far I really have not been a fan of his playcalling. The ONLY thing I really like so far about him is that we are finally utilizing J.P. Holtz. He is a real playmaker at the TE position and I'll never get why he was basically ignored by last year's staff.
