Teams must use a timeout if a player needs attention for an injury that becomes apparent after the ball is set for play. If no timeouts left, it is a 5 yard delay of game penalty.
This will help. But I always thought the best solution was to handle minor injuries like rugby does. The game continues and the player lays there until a stoppage. Another approach would be to require medical care be provided by the opposing team medical staff, and allow them to rule the player out for returning to the game. Or allow them to amputate the faking player's leg. That would definitely stop it.

Amputate the leg of the faking player’s head coach.

I like the idea that if you go down at any point in a drive you have to sit out the rest of that drive. I'd even be okay with them making it the rest of that quarter.

That said, I do think amputation is also fair and sensible.

What do you do about leg cramps. Player drops and goes to the side line, then he returns two plays later.
Almost a fake injury.

This rule says your team is charged a timeout if you cramp up right before the snap.
I'd prefer they let the current play continue to completion. Guys aren't going to die from a leg cramp.

They will be told to hobble towards the sidelines a few steps and then drop. If you're going to get dinged five yards, the coaches are going to make it as dramatic as possible so everyone points at how terrible the rule is.

we took this ridiculous strategy to another level when we played UCF. as a pitt fan, it was embarrassing.

They're turning it into FIFA.
I think they need a rule that if a player's injury stops play, they have to sit out 5 or 10 minutes of game time. Waived if injury was caused by a penalty.

yeah, it needs changed, it needs fixed but HOW? That's the problem. There are videos on twitter and youtube showing these fake injury displays and they are bordering on Fake soccer injuries on comedic performances but again, HOW?

Players do get cramps, they do tweak hammies. you really have to play judge, jury and executioner here in a matter of seconds..

It doesn't matter if it's fake or not. If it stops play to manage it the player has to get injury attention for their "safety". An actual injury might cost a team a time out or 5 yards. But it's keeping them safe.
They don't blow the whistle mid-play on a long run for even really bad injuries. Why blow it dead for a cramp occuring right before the snap? Play will be over in a few seconds anyway. Guy isn't going to die from it. So soft (read "saaawft").

wait, im confused. so if a DL just drops, or a CB, BEFORE the snap, you say "play on" until the play is over??

Man, i dont know about that one.

Yes. How does a guy get seriously injured getting in his stance?
Rugby plays on for minutes with guys down getting checked by the medical team on the field. Hockey plays on until the team with the injured player gets possession of the puck.
But with everyone being so soft the next best thing is charging the team with a timeout.

lol, no argument on any of this.

Hopefully Kade Bell's fast paced offense has some opposing defensive players doing this, to slow us down. we've been on the wrong side of this with pitt football, would be nice to have the "other" team having to slow us down for a change..

I can't see how they manage this rule. There's got to be a ton of leeway or they risk being accused of throwing player safety aside for offensive tempo. Are you forcing them to go on with the play if they don't feel right? You've also got offensive players to consider.

What's going to happen is guys are going to be told to just lay on the ground and not get up if they feel anything. Add another 30 minutes to each game.

the only thing i can think of is they have to sit out more of an extended time, like a series. but that doesnt end or even deter teams from doing it..

maybe give the refs more discretion to call a "Delay of game" penalty if they feel it's fake but you are putting a lot of the refs by doing that.

Yeah, just make them either sit out the rest of the series or the rest of the quarter if the game stops due to their injury. Then you can even act like you're doing it in the name of player safety.

Exactly. If you have a cramp you need to hydrate and rest. Going back in the game after one play means you might get hurt.
I recall a few years back NC State had a defender, safety I think, who was playing injured. He would come in, make a play then be attended to on the field like he was dying and be back in next play.
I think that was all real, but if a guy needs to come off the field more than twice then he is risking his well-being and needs to sit.
It was ridiculous how many times that guy stopped the game for medical attention.

I'll never forget on another Pitt site no longer around, the Pitt POV, the site's creator, Reed, wanted Keyshon Camp thrown off the team for faking his injury during that disaster loss at UCF in 2017.

The refs are never, ever going to call a delay of game penalty on Ohio State during a close game with Purdue or Indiana, if it's significant to the outcome. Never happening.

well i agree and i really dont want refs to decide outcomes of games by doing so..
