** Last game, my William & Mary sophomore typed these dribbles while we drove back from the Greenbrier after a tough loss.

** Tonight, it's my Kid's quote that drives the day … “we kept digging holes and then building ladders to get out!”

** So congratulations to our amazing Panthers and ladder carpenters who never died and found a way to build out for a most unlikely and perhaps even more important win for our Panthers.

** After all, carpenters are better than bricklayers!

** Carpenter #1. Our lead carpenter. Jaland Lowe. Throughout the game, he builds the foundation.

** Jaland was actually less than perfect as our lead carpenter. But the one quality he maintains throughout is fearlessness.

** So many times today, the author of this bit really never thought the Panthers were up to the task against the Buckeyes. But Jaland has no doubt.

** Perhaps Jaland was the only person on the court that thought he could make that jumper to tie the game at the end of regulation. Or also the tough finish for the and one to cut the 5 point Ohio State lead to two with a minute to go.

** Fearlessness is an amazing quality. It’s especially amazing when combined with talent.

** And Jaland thought he was going to hit the three with 25 seconds to tie. It was a play where he probably should have passed.

** He didn’t make that mistake twice and that’s why the Panthers climbed the final rung on this ladder in Columbus.

** Carpenter #2. The lead carpender’s trusted partner. Ish Leggett.

** Ish is equally fearless, and maybe even a tad tougher. I’m almost never worried when Ish is on the job. He wears the hardest of hats and demands the same from his crew.

** I’ve watched a whole heck of a lot of basketball this particular feast week, and I don’t think I saw a better pair of guards from in the entire county.

** And it’s actually pretty amazing that they combined for 49 points while just hitting 1 three point shot.

** Those are a couple of guys with mighty hammers.

** Carpenter #3. Our new carpenter’s apprentice. Papa Kante.

** At the 15:38 mark of the second half, carpenter Papa hammed Sean Stewart to send him to the line. At the time, the Panthers were down 11 and the fouls would have made it a 13 point game.

** Instead he clanged both and Papa scored on the other end to cut the lead to 9.

** This was undoubtedly the turning point in the game,

** Actually, the turning point was a few minutes earlier when GDG went down with injury.

** Here’s my quote at halftime: “But we are going to need to score 45 this coming half and hold them under 35. It's tough to see the latter happening.”

** I was wrong. We held them to 29.

** Personally, I just couldn’t see what would change in the Panther strategy to turn this game around.

** But Papa was that change.

** I’ll go all the way back to 2002 when freshman Chevy Troutman was inserted at the five to turn the game around for a Panther win at Georgetown.

** This performance should go right there with that one.

** Once Papa joined the defensive attack, suddenly everything the Buckeyes were trying to do became difficult.

** And I can’t even say it was always Papa’s doing. But when he came in, everyone started defending. It was pretty extraordinary actually.

** He was involved in basically every play on both ends to fuel the comeback.

** Just like Chevy changed that season, Carpenter Kante just might have the same impact.

** And finally, Carpenter #4. Zack. Zack gets last billing because he drove in the final nail.

** It’s wonderful when a player steps forward in a certain way when his team needs him most. That’s what Zack did today. Several times. Until the last time when it mattered most.

** Yep, with every hole the Panthers dug, they found a way to build a ladder to climb out.

** In fact, they built enough ladders for the best pure Panther non conference road win since … well since the Panthers beat Ohio State in Columbus in 2001.

** That was a pretty tough band of carpenters in 2001.

** These guys might be right there with them. And I think they are in pretty good shape to build some great things in 2025.

H2P!! This is a tough team. No Dunn. No Ish or Kante down the stretch in OT. Frustrating officiating on 50/50 balls. And they just kept battling. Really encouraging to see at this point in the season. Need to build on this tough win, but I am excited to see how the boys grow the rest of the way!

OSU shoots 51.7 % and makes 11-20 three pointers and has 20 assists and comes up empty
OSU had 28 points in the paint in the first half but only 6 in the second half and Papa was obviously key to that

That’s nice to hear-thank you. It’s easy to write after game like this.
I was listening to the game as I was walking along the pier in Boston and had to get on Peacock to catch the ending. I made a fool of myself jumping up and down on the game winner on a crowded sidewalk! My very next thought was I can’t wait to read the Dribbles later tonight 😂.

It is worth noting, and I was so tied up watching the actual game play I didn't notice until now. Dunn was jogging around pretty well on both feet tonight, borderline running. His foot injury looks to be way ahead of schedule and not nearly as bad as it looked last game. Perhaps there is a small window opportunity we get him back in a month. But its good news the foot is not a major concern.... and he should be able to keep up with conditioning and have proper elevation on his jumper when he comes back.

Going into their gym and pulling this off shows our guys have some really big stones! Looks like Capel has figured it out here. Our guys trust each other and go to war for eachother. It wasn't like that early on in Capel's tenure.

That definitely was a good sign. Hopefully that means we get him back at full speed, not just back but ready to play big minutes, a few games quicker.

What a game!!!!!!!! Gritty, gutty, gutsy!!!!! Never gave up. Honestly, thought we had them when it was 63-58 but Ish's foul on the 3-pointer and subsequent 4-point play changed the mo'. But we fought and fought and fought. Took advantage of OSU's misses at the line. When Royal missed the first free throw assuring we'd be down no more than 2 with 7 ticks left, you could see Austin pumping his fist knowing what it meant and as if it was foreshadowing what was to come. The rest will now be a moment in Pitt lore right up there with Levance's 3 against Duke at the Garden and Ronald Ramon's buzzer beater against the Hoopies!!! Incredible!!!

Just got home. Great to say an all-time shot in person. I was actually in Texas for the Ramon shot and have always regretted that. Decemt crowd. Pretty full lower level and upper sideline. No one in the one upper endzone and maybe a few dozen in the other upper endzone. I think if OSU had a do-over, they would have built a 10K-12K seat basketball arena and then a 3K-4K seat hockey arena. They dont need an NHL-style arena for college basketball especially when there is another one across town.

As for the game, I think Pitt did a nice jon staying within arm's length while OSU was shooting 70% 3/5 of the way into the game and then when we finally got a few stops, we capitalized. I thought Kante changed the game with his length on D and finishes. If Guillermo doesnt get hurt, we probably dont win.

I thought Ohio State was very good. Better than Wisconsin. This is a 5/6 seed and we beat them at their place. And WVU is helping us though Arizona probably isnt an NCAAT team. This is a massive, massive win. If you could pick OSU or Wisky, you pick this one. Beat Miss St and we're in. Well, probably can go 11-9 which shouldn't be an issue.

I think 11-9 or 12-8 with our wins already probably more than good enough. Our computer numbers are gonna be ridiculously high all season.

Oh yeah, with that shot Austin firmly secured a place in the longterm memory of Pitt fans. We will remember that shot decades from now. After this game the two plays that came to mind in comparison were exactly these two you mentioned, Fields and Ramon, two of my fondest Pitt basketball memories. Austin's game winner was an instant classic, right up there with our all time greatest moments.

DT you’ve heard this a thousand times but boy do we appreciate your Dribbles. Thanks for putting in the time and effort.
I'd like to second this. At this time of year, I am thankful for the effort DT puts into the Dribbles. It's one of the main reasons I'm a part of this board. What a game, we all screamed when Austin hit the shot...it was unreal.

And Hinson against Duke last season.
