CBS Sports Dodd put out a pretty good Article explaining the Evolution of Swag from the 1986 Miami-PSU NCS Fiesta Bowl Game to what happen ever since and reflects on why Paterno may not have wanted to dump Sandusky even after knowing (According To Victims Voices Unsealed) and was called the conscience of CFB back then, another slogan proven quite wrong today.

Yet, Sonny Vaccaro that I consider a "Visionary Sage in Sports" points out what it is all now. As well as how Bama's Saban is the New Creator, Innovator, and Maintainer of current and future Swag! While others follow!

A good read where CFB was, is at, and where it may be going right now. I see it as a challenge for the Pitt Football Program to achieve and taking on FSU & Clemson in the future, but appreciate other views of the Article to share on the Lair by the Posters here!

Selected Excerpts & Comments On Them:

The Birth of Swag:
30 years into the launch of college football's new era

Swag is synonymous with college football these days but that wasn't always the case:
............
Thirty years later, the conclusion to that season is almost secondary. Penn State intercepted Vinny Testaverde five times en route to a monstrous 14-10 upset in the Fiesta Bowl. But the game, the time might as well be remembered for what it wasn't: same old, same old.
It was, in fact, the Birth of Swag.
From the way Miami dressed, played and conducted itself that year, a new sports culture emerged. It wasn't limited to college football. It went beyond yapping and preening and running up the score. Whatever it is, it has reached across the sport to this moment three decades later............

The Miami-Penn State Fiesta Bowl that season was the first arranged No. 1 vs. No. 2 game in history. In a system ruled by old-boy backroom bowl deals, the excitement generated by the first winner-take-all bowl game was revelatory. "It was more hyped than any college game in modern history," said former Miami defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt..............

...."The world has changed," said former shoe executive Sonny Vaccaro. "There are no more virgins. The virginity is over now."...........

......The storyline that week of the Fiesta Bowl quickly developed. Joe Paterno wore the white hat as the conscience of the sport, while the big-mouthed Hurricanes were just beginning to unfurl their attitude. (Now Gone After The PSU Scandal & Reforms)......
........But in the end, Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky developed a multiple defense that confused Testaverde all night. The Heisman winner threw five interceptions. Miami's defense held Penn State to only 162 yards. The Nittany Lions hung on for Joe's second national title. (PSU Names Of Shame Today)
......
"Don't ever let this happen again," Highsmith told them. "We're going to win the national championship next year."The Hurricanes did just that. A second championship in five years only highlighted what the Canes didn't do. Between Jan. 1, 1986, and Oct. 15, 1988 -- a stretch of 28 games -- Miami's only loss was to Penn State. (Pitt's Wannstedt DC Legacy Still Honorable Today)
.....
Today, everything is swag. As nonprofit institutions, most colleges spend every penny they take in. The so-called facilities "arms race" is officially out of control. The NCAA has absolutely no oversight over schools that want to build ornate structures to house football, weight training and academics. Cranes are going up at a record pace. Saban's success is directly responsible for record enrollment. For the first time at Bama, there are more out-of-state students than in-state. A recent $50 million capital campaign was exceeded by $52 million.

Saban is one of six college coaches to surpass the NFL average head coach salary ($4.85 million). Texas A&M unabashedly decided to stake its future on a $500 million renovation to Kyle Field. The new capacity of 102,733 makes Kyle the fifth-largest stadium in North America. More important to Aggies everywhere, the structure is the largest in the SEC and the state of Texas.
........
By now you probably know that recruiting itself is swag in motion. Somehow we've fallen more in love with the process than the result. Parties are thrown over top-10 classes. Houston followed up a New Year's Six bowl win by landing the highest-ranked non-BCS recruiting class in history.........
It is a world where Miami is a mere shadow of what it used to be. Brown died tragically in 1992. The car he urged Campbell to buy languishes in a garage. Miami's last national championship was in 2001. It has been more than a decade since the Canes won 10 games. They've never so much as won their division in the ACC. Coach Mark Richt joins the program in 2016, the same year as Michael Irvin Jr...........

After borrowing game film from Tennessee (I think). Not wrong and not stupid. Sandusky always gets a little extra credit for something he really didn't do.

I will always remember that game as the beginning of Vinnie's down turn. Guy was supposed to be a superstar and never did much in the NFL.
He sucked in that NCG miami probably wins that game if they don't throw the ball at all.

I watch that game from Philly closely and it was well earned by the Penn State Defense and Sandusky was known to confuse Great QBs many times.

I was later at the NFL Draft that year drinking some coffee by Donut Table and Vinnie in an Orange Zog Shirt walked by, and I said what happen in that Fiesta Bowl Game? He just looked at me and rolled his eyes and smiled and moved on, as he was being drafted that year. He looked like an Adonis, later they found it he was color blind.

Miami had 12 first round Draft Picks on the team the next few years. Saw Mel Blount there too and it rained all early morning driving to NY from Philly that early morning. Steeler's took Woodson that year right after Jerome Brown. We got Greg Lloyd too.

If you ever get a chance to go to an NFL Draft do it.

For the people that know the truth, the Paterno name will NEVER have any shame associated with it.
Welll....explain all those Penn State Football Program 2012 Reforms if you can because they applied to correcting the Paterno Era's Error!

I can accept Joe was a Great Coach and his Game Week Prep & Game Day Sideline Coaching proved it, but you have to accept Paterno's Program Lack Athletic Integrity, Institutional Control, and Code of Conducts full of Title IX-Clery Act Violations.

The Penn State Name carries the same Shame what Paterno left in his own Legacy and cried admitted it before he past into in the night in Hindsight!

If you can't admit it, you lack the same Pseudo Honesty that was a Hypocrisy!

The NCAA Monitor Penn State Policies prove it and you can't refute it now that the World heard the Voices of Victim's no longer sealed?

Hmmnnnn, can you elaborate?

Miami lost to Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl the year before PSU played them in the National Championship. Miami had managed to score 40 odd points a game that season and were just killing everyone. However, Johnny Majors managed to hold them to 7 points in that bowl game, winning 35-7.

Allegedly, Paterno was able to get game film from Majors before the Fiesta Bowl matchup because he was interested in seeing what the Vol's had done to slow that offense down.

Anyway, that's the story I heard.
