I think the hatred for Joe P (deserved) and the PSU cult among Pitt fans especially those over 35 is so strong that it might be a distraction to the program overall.
In light of the scandal at PSU- I really would like to do as little as possible with them.
Personally, the anger and hatred between the fan bases goes beyond the usual bavk and forth between rivals.
Perhaps in a decade or so- once the generation of PSU and Pitt fans who came of age post-Paterno it would be good to start playing each other.
Right now with all of the stink and internal battles at PSU - I think both football programs would be better off not playing.
I want to beat Penn State - because I hate the PSU Joe bots - not as much as wanting to see the Pitt Panther team return to excellence. I don't think its good and would prefer to play WV for a rivalry that is heated but in a friendly way.
I am afraid things could get ugly in the stadiums over the next 4 years and would hate to see Pitt get dragged into the controversy.
I hope that the fans who attend the game next Saturday are positive for the boys on the field wearing blue and gold and avoid chants about Joe.
Of course, I strongly recommend that fans of all teams (especially those of Penn State- who are Penn State fans, not Joe Pa fans) continue to debate the cultists and put them in their place. I just think that Pitt and Penn St. might be better off not playing for a bit
