He pulled the leg kick three times in the second half.
I LOVE his chippiness, and this is a good trick to have in the bag, but three times in one half is too much, he has to focus on actually getting the shot off and making it (walk before run) and it is a trick, not a staple.
Further, its a niche play that you just are not going to get away with more than once or twice total in a game. Yeah, Boeheim got into the ref's ear about it, he should have, and no doubt HCJC would do the same. SO, the second time he did it, the ref did not call it. He should have left it at that and put it away for the rest of the game.
BUT, he yapped at the ref about it the second time, and after the ref had Boeheim up in in his grill over it the first time, pretty much ensured that he was going to do what he did the third time - and the Cuse player did what he and X did, played up the "trip."
He overplayed his hand on it, and showed the ref up.
Can't really fault the team for last night, I didn't expect them to win. The zone match up with Cuse is just horrible for this team, which has so many offensive shortcomings. It will be tough with any team, but this is what Cuse does, ALL the time, and Boeheim recruits players specifically to do it.
I am not slagging on them because they played hard and did some good things, but having to play JWF for 38 and Ellison for 25 minutes catches up with you because of their limitations.
JWF offensively is basically just a three point shooter, he struggles to convert on drives and has on in between game. He was 4-13 overall, 4-11 from three. He does a decent job rebounding because he if focusing on it for the team, but he isn't a natural rebounder.
Again, Ellison did some good things, but he his scoring touch is so problematic. That he just did not take that open shot int he lane late in the game was telling, he got 9 points, but on 3 of 9 shooting.
It is tough with the Cuse's length, but if these two hit two more of those shots inside the arc during the course of the game, its a one point game.
That said, Trey is still a mess offensively, and they are going to have a hard time winning any game where he does not contribute more. He has to be able to take (and hit 35% or so) on the semi-contested three - he is a shooting guard and that is at the top of the job responsibilities, but doing so is the foundation to his and pretty much any SGs game.
REALLY wish the Wake and BC games were at home ...
- First time, he got the offensive foul and the ref called a foul and put him on the line.
- Second time, made similar contact, the ref did not call it and he yapped at the ref for not calling it.
- Third time, the ref called him on it.
