I’m mildly surprised, assumed he wouldn’t get anything major but this sounds almost like total absolution.

I told you, guys! Well, actually I said at worst he'll get a half year suspension. And Heather could have had him instead of Capel. He badly wanted the job. But the General Counsel advised against it and Heather went with that. Now she has to pay a huge buyout and pick a mid-major coach at random while Miller is in the NCAA Tournament at Xavier. Say what you want about Miller, but the team would have been much better the last 5 years if he was coaching.

And this goes to show you I was right all along with the wire tap. He never said what he was reported as saying. He isnt that stupid. Book did all the work.

This is a major L for BballinsiderfromPitt. This actually counts as 10 wins for me and 10 losses for him.

You are all witnesses

Miller was toxic and Pitt was smart to not risk it. He’s still as dirty as they come and he no at have gotten by this time, but he could screwed Pitt. No reason to chance it.

SMF deserves to take a victory lap . I assumed justice would be served and Miller would join his minions in exile . You people needto pay homage to SMF like joe dinardo he said it would

Congrats. Atleast you admit that you are lying to make him look great in your eyes..

it was a top 15 class when the year began. I haven't looked since. Sorry it dropped a few spots.. we'll see where it finishes.

you're trying really hard rn

I think you're ignoring a significant number of Ls you've been dealt this year.

This class is just ok. In bag times, they would’ve commanded anywhere from 5-15k. Not a significant amount of money. And they certainly didn’t cost any NIL money.

Definitely not worth keeping a coach over

I will never understand why we hired a guy who's known for recruiting and don't let him recruit the way he needs to... well up until this past class.. NIL is now a thing and he suddenly has a top 15 class.. no coincidence.
So your argument now is that it is PITT’s fault that Capel is failing? I am 100 percent sure Heather Lyke didn’t say, “hey Jeff, you cannot drop bags here” before he took the job.

Capel’s failures are his own. He has the highest budget any Pitt coach has ever had and spearheaded facility upgrades that had been long overdue and kept other coaches from winning. Has the cool uni’s logo, the Pete fixed the right way for cameras and everything. He’s gotten every possible thing a coach could want.

His problem is he’s not a very good manager of a locker room and he’s an average coach. He was a great recruiter because he had on a Duke polo under the winningest coach of all time. Nothing more or less

did they lose out on RJ and Efton because they offered more money than UNC and LSU?

They were involved with both of those kids til the end…

So he’s either stupid or playing the game… either way, he’s a failure.

or he almost beat out UNC and LSU with MUCH less money and MUCH less resources. He's had a hand tied behind his back. They hired a guy who can pull in top talent. They didn't hire a seasoned gameday coach. They picked their guy, and handicapped him. Capel has made plenty of recruiting mistakes... thinking he could beat out teams with more money and resources himself is certainly one them.

Miller is a better coach, but Miller has won nothing with way more talent. He needs talent to win.. as does every other coach.. but he does it by buying talent. That was what the thread was about.. hiring Miller guarantees nothing if Pitt isn't 100% in the game.. one foot in, one foot out.

Your constant excuses for Capel are nauseating.

Just because I'm not 100% on the bash train doesn't mean I support everything he does. The spectrum is beyond titled on this board.

he knows how to recruit high end talent and personalities. he kept trying to do it when the school didn't really setup him up for success. he should've managed his time better recruiting and went a different route.

all last season and offseason I was given crap about his class and kids coming in for 2022-23. He took a different route and got some older, experienced talent. Kids that want to win and don't really have a spot at the next level. He also recruited some undgrads with some high upside.

I'm sorry, but you're not going to find too many classes better than this. It truly was a grandslam of a class last year.. that he gets literally 0 credit for.

You guys can bash me for my support.. that's fine.. but I do call out his mistakes. I'll be totally transparent about it.. but the complete disregard to mention anything positive proves that you simply have an agenda, or don't know what the hell you're talking about.. I'll go with the former since I know you know basketball. I'm not asking you throw Capel a parade.. but give credit where it's due.

1) Dior recruited Pitt because literally no one else would take him. He had zero options because of his anger issues (kicked out of 2 schools for fighting, but framed as leaving on his own) that manifested itself quickly at Pitt. Capel was gonna roll with this team as of June 15. The constant crying about Dior not being reinstated yet is annoying. Capel never planned on Dior. It was a last minute thing.

2) I don’t applaud my dog for taking a shit outside. She is supposed to. I don’t applaud basketball coaches of the teams I root for recruiting decent enough players to beat shitty out of conference teams. That isn’t the standard here anymore. Pitt can recruit ACC -quality players with almost any coach as evidenced by Stallings having Marcus Carr.

3. I don’t give credit to someone or excuse someone for bringing a knife to a gun fight. In the recruitments mentioned, Davis and Reid, you’re saying he was outbid. So he was either a) playing the game or b) thought his Duke background and relationships would win out. If it’s B, he’s an idiot. If it’s A and he didn’t have enough ammo, he’s also an idiot. I would expect someone as smart as Capel to do whatever it takes at that point even it means coming out of his own pocket (coaches, especially assistants, used to do this all the time). If Orlando Antigua got another shot, do you think he’d hire his brother again? Do you think he’d think he could go after same caliber of player he was because he USED to coach at Kentucky and have Cal as a closer? I’d hope he would learn both of those lessons.

The team in general is fine, an improvement on his and Stallings teams. But they’re at best an NIT team and after 5 years and assembling one of the oldest teams in the country I’m not gonna throw a parade for a guy who has been paid over 15 million (and gifted his brother and his friends over 1.5 mill each) for perhaps garnering one NIT bid. That’s not good enough.

you understand you're making up excuses to bash him, right? just like I make up excuses to defend him.

Dior could've easily been paid and gone G League. He got the kid to come across the country to Pittsburgh. The most talented kid to ever sign on to play Pitt hoops.

The 2022-23 class was the best class since when? Adams? 2012? Every single kid is either an ACC player right now, or will be once they develop.

again, I didn't say you have to throw a parade, but your complete lack of recognition makes your agenda obvious. You've staked your name multiple times to 6 or less ACC wins.. you said a few weeks ago this team was worse than Stallings 2nd year.. now you're saying NIT at best.. keep it going.

Pitt wasn’t hiring him away from Arizona at that time .
And the Millers literally laughed at the idea Sean would come to Pitt
So it’s a stupid hypothetical

You are getting mixed up. After Dixon - no, he didnt want it. After Stallings, he 100% wanted it, mostly due to the fact he knew he was going to be fired by Arizona in the next year or 2. He wanted it. We considered him but the GC advised against it and Heather thanked the GC in her Capel press conference. In hindsight, Capel over Miller was the wrong decision

1) they’ll be very lucky to make the NIT. Literally everything needs to break right.
2) Dior is from Kingston NY. He had Pitt and Washington State. I’m not sure he was even a take for Wazzu. He wasn’t for Miss state.
3) what am I supposed to recognize? A slightly above average recruiting class and possibly being 17-16? My god how far have we fallen.

Capel will never go to the NCAA tournament at Pitt.

we have fallen very far. Keeping the same expectations from 10 years ago seems awfully crazy.

My expectations are to make 2-3 NCAA tournaments every 5 years. They’re not that high. 0-5 is terrible. 0-7 is nearly impossible.

Penn State is in a better position than Pitt.

lol PSU has 2 tournament appearances in over 20 years and they're currently 7-3 and going to have go through a gauntlet in the Big10. Are they really in THAT much better of shape? Since Capel was hired, he has 58 wins. PSU has 60 in that time period. Pitt currently has a better class for next season. Pitt plays in an easier conference. Give PSU the edge as far as "in a better position".. that's fine, but it's awfully close.

Yes. They are in much better shape. They appear to have hired a good coach. We have to hope to hit the mid-major lottery in March. Chances of hiring a MM coach who wjll be good? 20%

I'll bet you Pitt finishes with a better conference record

@_NIT Phil you can have some action too since you brought up conference record.

They sure might. But the ACC is garbage.

Capel has out recruited Micah so far.. 22 and 23 classes. I'd much rather have our underclassman + incoming class than what PSU has lined up.

Pitt is in an easier conference... a conference where a power shift could be taking place sooner than later.

K + Roy are gone.

Jimmy will be gone soon. Hamilton's clock is ticking. Lville is a mess. Larranaga isn't getting any younger. Maybe those schools don't take a hit, but there will certainly be a window to make a leap up in the conference.

sure, Micah is a better coach.. what else about PSU puts them in a better spot? History? nope. Easier conference? nope. Recruiting? nope. facilities? debate it. Student section? not close. Underclassman? go ahead and debate it but you have two NBA 7' on the bench .. kinda hard to beat that alone.

we'll see what happens. Best part is they play the games.

Do you have an updated algorithm for a path to say, Dixon ll?

PSU golden era was the frickin eastern 8, save maybe that NIT when Joe made it to MSG and said jewish kids couldn't jump or something.
