Onside kick?

One possibility of Narduzzi attempting the now infamous field goal could be that he planned on an onside kick in the ensuing kickoff. There were 4+ minutes in the game with one timeout in his pocket....if you're going to catch someone off guard, that would be the time to do it.

If true, it could explain why Narduzzi doubled down on his strategy in the post game press conference. Obviously he wouldn't want to reveal strategy that never played out.

I don't think you would have caught anyone bu surprise there with an onside kick. You catch teams by surprise when it's tied in the third quarter or something. Penn State definitely would have been on the lookout in this instance.

Regardless, the odds are much better of getting a touchdown from 5 feet out than recovering an onside kick and getting a touchdown or getting a stop and mounting a touchdown drive. There just isn't a leg to stand on here for Narduzzi.

If he would have made the kick and the recovered the onside kick Narduzzi would have probably kicked another field goal to cut it to one

Yea and after that he'd work on getting a safety for 2 and win by 1.

No sense running up the score and being a bully.

My distribution of run vs pass would have been one run, one pass, and two runs.

One yard, 36 inches, with four plays on offense.

If you don't get the td pin them down inside the one.

nothing like compounding dumb play calling by additional dumb play calling

No. It was just a major brain fart, cut and dried.
